Title: Casualty Markers
Post by: Friends of General Haig on April 21, 2021, 01:13:34 PM
My latest blog post shows some casualty markers I have made using figures from the 1898 Miniatures’ Tercios range, and Warbases’ counter bases.

Nice, but the way I general I would need a LOT more markers than you.

Those are very dramatic and have a vignette quality to them. They look very effective

Love those casualty markers. While I use the smaller bases, yours habe much more character to them  :-*

Very nice. I particularly like the first one. I was thinking about converting it so that the wounded figure is in fact drunk, but haven't got round to it yet.

Very nice. They look just the ticket.

But, I too am in the same position as has.been. I'd need too many to do it. Consequently I have to make do with small stones on two pence pieces. Which is a cheaper, more versatile way of doing the same thing (less well).

Even this Ravenna game has thirty or so units

Stones on a counter can be seen here, funny angle but a 'two stone' marker by the look of it.

I do have a question about the dials. Do you have a way to stop them moving to the wrong number when they get accidentally jogged? I have some for other stuff (I had Martin at War Bases make me up some bigger 20 spot dials for altitude marking in WW1 dogfight games), they are pretty loose, and this is an issue. I tried a thin card 'washer' but this made them too stiff.

Really nice. I'm amazed that you have been able to cram so much onto one of those casualty markers.

I've always gone for dead people on my mine. Might have to reassess that seeing your not-quite dead figures

Thanks all for the comments, much appreciated  :D

If you have a lot of units then you do need a few of these marker dials.  The small stones idea is good, and I like the way that they would not look too out of place.  I have just gone for having lots of casualty markers though.  I try to add a few every so often as I paint new units.

A friend of mine used to do very nice mini-dioramas of wounded
figures, to keep track of a unit's status. Then he realised he had
a whole file box full of dead & wounded!
Some minor rebasing incorporated them into existing 'walking'
units. Result was another brigade of units.

@Hu Rhu - good point, but what if I supply the casualty markers for both sides?  ;D

@has.been - re-basing?  :o  I think I’d rather paint the extra brigade  :D

Hi Jim, they’re from Foundry https://www.wargamesfoundry.com/collections/baggage-animals-and-livestock-1/products/gpr006-horse-casualties

(I think one of them is not quite dead  :o .)

I see one or two sitting and kneeling figures in your latest photo. Do you happen to remember who makes them please? I'm thinking about coming up with a unit of men resting by the roadside and am on the lookout for sitting and kneeling figures.

Hi Paul, I’m pretty sure these are Warlord and Front Rank.  Warlord from their Pike & Shotte range (think there is a highlander version as well) and Front Rank from the Jacobite range.

Look forward to seeing your resting unit 👍

Many thanks. I wouldn't hold your breath for this resting unit. I've been collecting figures for it for years and I'm still nowhere near having enough.

There are some available as 3D print files for sitting and kneeling.

Poiter50: please could you explain how this would work. I don't have a 3-D printer, I'm afraid.

That’s my approach, too, painting casualty markers as I paint units. Particularly useful with different coloured units like TYW, but I do the same for napoleonics. But they do mount up quickly.

Files are purchased from a free site such as Thingiverse or (in some cases) Wargamer3D or commercial sites such as Wargamer3D or Cults3D(?) and then printed either on your own (preferably resin) printer of via a commercial printer. Some of the sale sites have links to such commercial enterprises which allows you to obtain your pieces from them. Those sites may in fact already hace a licence to print saving you the expense of purchasing the file yourself but that cost is included in their pricing as they pay royalties to the original file producer). Here in Oz, I have used commercial printers as well as having a number of gaming friends who have their own printers (initially plastic and now resin) and are good enough to do some prints for me.
