Title: CommissarMoody Tudor Renaissance project.
Post by: commissarmoody on April 22, 2021, 12:25:52 PM
I have finally decided to start working on the Tudor Dollies I got from Stuart a few years back. They are now sold by steelfist.
I have only got 3 based, and put together so far. Complete with green stuffed sleeves. They are not primed and I hope to get some painting done tonight.

I have more in my blog. Mostly showing the books I have used for inspiration, along with a few more photos.

Thanks appreciated. Are they "castings" made from Bluestuff or individually sculpted? Either way, they are impressive1  8)

I made a few press molds using a helmet from warlord games Landsknecht plastic box.

Cheers, Press moulding is something I need to give a real go. I've got a large number of Tudor dollies and many of them are going to need visors circa 1513.

Yeah, this are honestly my first attempt at making some. Took two times to get it right. And I ditched trying to make the back, and settled for chopping up some of the provided sallet in the Perry sets.
And slowly sliced away bits with my blade tell it fit.
Now I need to take a break, got the helmets and white on them. And realized I can not find my red for the cross. Which is kind of important for the English.  lol

Maybe I will go for it with my chain mail metal. The gunmetal might be a little too dark.

Stuart's got some press moulded stuff somewhere on his blog..... sorry, I'm not sure where they are and haven't really got the time to sift through.....

Nice work on the press moulding.

I’ve had mixed successes with it for armour, visors and caps. This pic has them all;

This might sound like a daft question Stuart but did you do the press moulding in small chunks on each mini? I would assume you did but I'm really very much in the dark as I've been too chicken to give it a try as of yet  :)

Thanks Stuart,
Yeah as I said it took me a few tries to get the viser right. But I am likeing the results now. But as stated, takeing a break from the painting while I wait for some paint to come in the mail. If boggles the mind that all the shops in town run out of red and VMC pale sand at the same time.  lol
I haven't tried applying the armor as of yet, did you shave or clip the models before adding the Armor? Or just just add it to the base model with no prep or change?

Yes it’s done in bits, separate breastplate and tassets.

You need to shave quite a bit off the moulded bit and the model to get it to look convincing.

Thanks. Intricate work but well worth the effort. A degree of experimentation required one would think too.

That's what I figured, and I will give it an attempt soon.

The press moulds are really, really impressive, but it would be lovely to have some cast dollies, or better still 3-D printable dollies.

Reviving this old project. Finally moved into a new home and am mostly done unpacking. Sadly my old figs for this project are still missing.
But on the up side the bellows faced sallets I had commissioned arrived Thursday.

Great sculpts, great detail, and can't wait to start useing them.

Quite beautiful sculps and castings. I have but hoped and dreamed of "bellow faced" bascinets as they make the prospects of Flodden so much more doable- until now...... if I may ask, will these be available commercially (please)?

I’m very happy that you are satisfied with the end result! And that these helped the revival of the project  :)

They should be, Captain Harlock retains the rights to the molds and he has expressed interest in doing so.

Finally found some time to set down. And see how the heads fit onto some perry and steelfist bodies.

I think they will work just fine. Now to add some arms.

Interesting, please keep going- these heads might just be exactly what I need for my long fancied Flodden game (since 2011 in fact!) :)
