Well, I had a few half-cooked ideas for this and was debating on even entering- then I realized today that I have a project I need to start in order to continue my Rangers of Shadow Deep campaign. Essentially its a board that is mostly composed of steep stairs... so here's the placeholder :)
-
Look forward to seeing your progress mate - stairs are one of those things I don’t enjoy making, so full credit to you for going out of your way to build some.
:)

That one sentence already evokes so many images; can't wait to see what you'll come up with!
-
Little progress so far. This was a tough year to be a school teacher, but I'm now that the semester is over I can get crackin' on personal projects.

My original plan was to use Hirst blocks to slowly work up the 30 inches of table, a 1/4" rise every inch, so it would end up being about 8" high at the end.
That's not quite the 60 degree angle the scenario describes, and my method doesn't have the fear factor of a steep gradient. Most people that run this just abstract it and use a flat table, I have seen a few crazy people make a dimensional version with a heavy slope. I'm trying to decide if I am that dedicated :)
-
Better late than... well... you better get a move on as there is only about a week and half to go! ;D

Plenty of time ;)
I have another method in mind that might end up being lighter, easier, and more steep :)
Generally, I tend to ruminate over things quite a while and get the good ideas toward the deadline lol
-
I already think you’re going to win, Matt lol
I know what you’re capable of!
Looking forward to seeing how it comes together :)

No chance on this one, I'm not usually a contender on the 'Build Somethings', which is fine with me- its all about getting something done. Last year's ruined building gets a heck of a lot of use.
I just need to get this thing done to advance the campaign my friend and I are playing!
-
After a literal trip "back to the to the drawing board" and some use of the Pythagorean Theorem, I scrapped my first idea and went with a 60 degree slope. Before the overall height was a paltry seven inches, now it is 24! This provides the threateningly steep feeling the scenario specifies, and I think I can actually widen the 'platforms' for accommodating figures.

Thus far the build is made from 'gator foam', a lightweight and stronger version of foamcore (also much more pricey). I'll likely ditch the Hirst blocks and go with regular insulation foam.
-
Wow! Thats defineatley a LOT more dramatic than your first version!! :o .You're going to need a bigger hobby room! Knowing your past works, this is going to be a corker!! o_o o_o o_o
-
Much more intimidating than the first version. Definitely meets the difficult criteria imho.

Agreed :)

The main pathway is done, as well as 'fly hole' platforms and the teasure marker area. Currently testing the width as I want to make the holes removable, and they need to be large enough to place the giant fly base inside.
Next, adding more platforms under all the areas a Ranger could fall, rounding edges to mitigate the blocky look, and then building up rocky textures.
-
Wow....simply WOW
This is going to be great :o :o
-
Awesome; now that's a set of stairs only a ranger could love! 8)
And I hate to break it to you, but your pet coral snake has escaped apparently...
-
Fantastic work!

Looks great :)

Haha, good eyes... that's a stick I found several years ago on a camping trip, that I painted in a 'folk art' style :)

This build is definitely in the 'ugly as hell' stage. I need to wait for the spray foam to cure so I can trim it up. After a layer of paper tissue to unite it, and texturing, it should be along the lines of what I'm envisioning.

Looks very promising I think! Certainly way more dramatic than my take on the same scenario,
-
Very impressive update since I last posted. lol
-
That is going to look good :o
-
Wow! That is fantastic,I really really like this :-* :-* :-*
-
Damn fine work. I’ve never used spray foam. Was it hard to work with?
-
My boys are retired but if there was ever an adventure into the deep...

I wouldn't say it is hard to use; it expands quick, and then slowly continues to expand- so it does tend to project beyond what you want to actually fill. It is very easy to cut and shape though, so that may be an advantage.
-
wow
-
I am in awe! What an amazing project :o

These are probably the last two pics before the real painting starts.
To tie things together and start introducing texture, I used my tried-and-true method of utilizing toilet paper and Mod-Podge or acrylic polymer medium. I added gray paint and some sand to the mix to be able to tell where I'd been easily. A little over a year ago, using TP would have been like covering a piece in gold leaf lol
(https://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/51/4060-010621012753.jpeg)
After this I added some rocks and sand to the nooks and crannies.
Next, I'll use the airbrush to darken everything and to get in the crevices, then on to the real painting.
-
That is an excellent way to unify and blend all the textures and levels. This will be one dangerous set of stairs.
-
Excellent progress 8)
-
Good grief, you'd need a risk assessment to climb up that! :D
-
Majority of painting is done with the main build, I just need to add some moss and foliage here and there.
I also want to add in a couple of scenic features, bones lying about, etc. but the only one I think I can show via photo is a large bird nest:
This was made by pressing a bunch of little pieces cut from furnace filter into some greenstuff, shaped with an '"Instant Mold" I had laying about.
-
Well, the pics have been fired off- another BSC done and dusted. This one was a fairly difficult thing to photo and I needed to break out my big black piece of Space Hulk felt for a backdrop lol
-
Can’t wait to see the finished work. I had to use a gray bed sheet.

I agree wholeheartedly, Matt. I would say it was the second toughest in my 11 years of teaching. So, congrats to you for having the energy to undertake this after what I'm sure was an exhausting year. Looks fantastic! You'll have to take photos and post a game report when you guys play the scenario on it!! :-*

fantastic :-*

A most excellent build!

Thanks for the kind words gents :)
Had a chance to play the "Broken Stairs" two days ago, I'll post some more pics when I get a chance. In the meantime here's my friend contemplating the approach of multiple giant flies...

A spectacular build DR M. :-* :-* :-*
-
Simply awesome. Very atmospheric and characterful.
-
Great to see it being used already, one of my favourite builds of the competition

Very cool. I liked this one a lot. Just finished the scenario after this one with the farmhouse in the woods.
-
Have you made cards with all the stats for shadowdeep on them? Are they available to buy somewhere or home made?
-
That is really cool. It looked great in the compo pictures, but this shows it’s true colours. Excellent stuff!
-
Wow. Looks even better in use! Thanks for sharing.
-
Thanks all :)

Officially produced stat cards :)
Just received them that day in fact! They're really high quality. Worth it for me because I spend a lot of time looking up stats in the book lol

Brilliant work!

I know what you mean. I spend it between going to stats, back to the mission to see what card is the event.

Okay, I got a chance to dump a bunch of pics on the blog:

Great photos Dr.!

Even more goodnes. Thanks for sharing.

Terrific piece of scenery :-*
-
now to figure out how you can play out more scenarios on that board
it's too good just for the one

There's a suggestion in the rulebook that players go back through the three missions, return journey with survivors from the third mission. Would be tough as hell :)
I also imagine going up the stairs would be even worse :)
-
Might be hard to return that way but it would make for more excellent photo's. :)
