Title: Ogrob's medievals - Lots of things assembled 6/2 -22
Post by: Ogrob on April 24, 2021, 12:57:12 PM
Here we go again, another project, another thread.

A while back one of my gaming buddies brought up the idea of playing something medieval, and I, having just seen Captain Blood's fantastic Fistful of Lead battle reports and always eager to buy more Claymore Castings, jumped right in. We're a little fuzzy on the details, but we might play fistful of Lead or the new Baron's War rules at some point. Until then I'll just have a good time painting knights.

At first I thought of making these spanish as my buddy wanted 100 year war french, and I didn't want more longbows (there's 50 odd in my Game of Thrones force alone). Then I decided I can't be bothered with historical accuracy and just picked a colour scheme that I liked and that's that. They might be french, they might be german, they might be burgundian.

So here is what I've done so far:

These light infantry are a remnant from the spanish idea, with their javelins:

Couple of crossbows:

Three men at arms, Claymore, V&V, Perry:

V&v, perry, V&V, Antediluvian:

Westfalia (a fantasy figure), Perry, Claymore, V&V:

More to come for sure, I have a bunch of figures in various stages of completion, including Claymore's fantastic mounted men at arms.

What do you think?

I really like how they have turned out so far. A great looking retinue with a well-painted coat of arms. Like you, I prefer not to get caught up too much in whether something is historically accurate or not - as long as it looks good and is near enough and the miniatures are playable then I am fine.

Great job so far! Are the javelin arms from the Victrix Irish?

Any excuse to paint up more of the Claymore range is a good excuse in my books!  :D

Hands and bucklers are from Wargames Atlantic irish, cut onto the gambessoned Perry arms. The lad on the right has a Victrix viking arm.

Ah whoops! Got the manufacturers mixed up! Thanks for clarifying!

The hands fit really well on the Perry arms too, they work great together

Very nice indeed, especially the Gambesson.

Thanks fellas! For the bases I have grownvery fond of these 2mm tufts, I like the stubby, almost mossy look. I get them from Gamer's Grass, they have both the tiny little individual tufts and the larger irregular shapes.

Update time! I have completed the next set of figures for this project, this time mostly mounted knights.

Group shot:

These three are Perry, two plastics (I decided on heater shields across the board for more cohesion) and one of the free metal knights I got with their Agincourt kit pre-order. I cut the plume of his bacinet, I think he looks better this way:

This lad is a Perry kitbash, inspired by medieval and renaissance depictions of St Maurice. Perry Ansar head with a greenstuff hat:

Both of these are metal, one from Claymore Castings and the other one of Wargames Illustrated's icon range:

And finally the free Sergeant that came with Footsore's Baron's War pre-order:

The conversions are really effective!

Rookie question but how difficult was it to head-swap the St. Maurice figure? You've done a really clean job scooping out the old helmeted head from the gorget there!

Pretty easy, it's a relatively clean line to follow with an x-acto blade. The head needs a bit of trimming as well to sink it a little bit into the gorget.

I'm loving this 'rule of cool' idea of using historical models a historically. I've got a ton of Footsore Baron's War models on the way and am inspired to do something similar. Also, the Westfalia fantasy hero looks perfect with this lineup. Oddly enough the Westfalia site lists her as 32mm, but she doesn't seem any larger than the others?

I would say she fits right in with the Perrys which are bang on 28mm to the eye. The Claymore are ever so slightly smaller and the V&V just a little larger, but all far from 32mm.

Thanks. I really love how she fits in. I might have to pinch this idea...sorry!

Fantastic. I’ve been Intimidated by painting surcoats and shields with heraldic colours but you’ve shown an effective but simple approach. Lovely kitbashes.

Thanks mate! I needed something simple and enjoyable for this project, otherwise it would probably not have happened. I may add one or two more colour schemes to the force to get that medieval mishmash heraldry feel, but I will stick to these simple two/three colour designs.

Finally finished a few more soldiers for this project. These are mostly Perry plastics but I did use a few Fireforge bodies for some variation.

I also got a new phone which means a new camera to learn. I think once I get the hang of it I will be able to get some very nice photos.

They look very nice. The photo itself is pretty clear too - some nice contrast between the figures and the background.

They look good! The high-contrast of the lightly-coloured gambesons with the livery works really well!

Coming back to the thread I see I grabbed the wrong photo of these guys. This is the one I had planned to upload. I think you can see a few more details in focus:

Thank you!

Another small update, I finished this knight. This guy is a 3D print from Caballero Miniatures. I don't have my own printer, but got this one printed and cleaned off Ebay.

I have a pile of Claymore knights coming in, but I am going to start on a second colour scheme so that eventually I will end up with the retinues of a few allied noblemen.

Great thread. I used to be obsessed with knights as a kid, at some point I moved on to other areas. Threads like this make me want to start some medievals.

Hard to believe that's a print, damn that chain looks crisp!  :-*

Resin printing can get some crazy results now, no print lines at all on that guy.

I'm a very recent convert to resin printing (I was the same with the early plastics! Duh on my part!) and having had some of these in my hand I can say that they stand up to any metals I have seen before and then some  8)

Lovely brushwork too boot Ogrob  :-*

So this project has been long forgotten. The only thing I really continued with was buying high/late medieval models. I've at least gotten to the point where most of it is assembled and cleaned, and some light conversion work has been done.

Here is a group shot of all things medieval that have accumulated on my lead pile:

Broken down by groups, we are looking at the following.

Claymore Castings Knights with Lances, two packs, and the hero packs Philip of France and Count Alencon. Philip has, like several of the models coming later, lost his crown, so as to be a more generic knight figure.

The remaining models from Claymore's Knights 3 and 4, and John the Blind (again crownless). Started a second livery scheme on these, but changed my mind part of the way. We'll see what happens.

Bad Squiddo's Jeanne de Clisson and Fireforge's Baldwin with a simple headswap. I liked the mini overall but wasn't impressed with the leper mask when I had it in hand.

Claymore's King Edward, King Philip and Black Prince packs. Again some crowns have been taken off, and the banner bearers hold shields instead.

Some more kings, this time from Footsore. I took the crown off Longshanks, but Llewelyn and Robert the Bruce were a little too involved so I left those on.

And finally Claymore's latest release, their italian spearmen. I use Fireforge plastic spears, fortunately the digital sculpts on these have large enough slots to drill with the bigger drill needed.

So yeah, a whole bunch on medievals waiting for paint. As you can see I prefer to use plastic weapons when I can. There's also an imbalance in sculpts with way more nice command figures than regular troops. Can be fixed with some converting.

What do you think? Should I stick to one colour scheme or set out to do a second or even third set of livery?
