Hello,
Has anyone gamed any Plains Indian battles focusing on the time period of 1840 - 1860?
Thank you

No but I have given it serious thought. Actually many battles, wars and conflicts during this period.
Many of the engagements were much closer than the later Indian Wars.

There is the First Sioux War
Battle of Solomon Fork, Kansas, 1857
Battle of Cieneguilla, 1854
Battle, of Crooked Creek, 1857
just to name a few.

I have a large collection for the Mexican-American War. I have used it in solo gaming against my Plains Indians. The playing field is somewhat leveled by the lack of more advance firearms for the Army. Plus it was fun to see a different uniform style against the Indians.

I would like to see US infantry, cavalry and artillery in 1850 Shako's in 28mm.

The old Frontier line of figures used to carry them. Not the same quality of current manufacturers, but not bad either. They are closer to 25mm than 28mm.

Is there a link?

I don't know who, if anyone is still carrying them.

We used Foundry miniatures to do a few of the northern plains intertribal wars that came before the civil war and mixed in TVAG's Gangs of New York minis to do the 1st Riel rebellion.

The Coeur D'Alene War of 1858 is a potential good one - combined arms operations, infantry, cavalry and howitzers against mounted tribal war bands. The Battle of Four Lakes and the Battle of Spokane Plains (or elements of them) might make cool scenarios depending on the rules you're using, although in reality the Indians were outgunned due to new army rifles outranging the old trade muskets the Indians were armed with, so the scenarios would need careful consideration.
I'm personally planning on using Perry Civil War Union figures (with some head swaps - campaign hat instead of kepi on some models) for some gaming set in that campaign and the wars of the 1860s - the Minnesota War and the Apache campaigns around Apache Pass, plus Red Cloud's war, the campaigns against the plains tribes in 1864/65, etc. I know the civil war look isn't quite right for the 1858 campaigns, but they'll do...
I've already converted/preppped some mounted and dismounted cavalry, but the project is in a queue behind some Back of Beyond/WW1 stuff at the moment. Having said that, I might paint a few cavalry soon just to give me a break from the mass of khaki I'm painting currently lol...

I found the attached image.

I had another thought for you... Dixon Miniatures do a line of Early ACW infantry militia in frock coats and conical Shakos. They would work for the early 1850's. With a head swap onto ACW cavalry in a shell jacket, they would make good cavalry for the early 1850's.
