Title: UVS Stargrave - Diminutive Robot 28 /02/2024
Post by: Ultravanillasmurf on April 30, 2021, 06:11:06 PM
Thanks to Nick and the crew for getting my Stargrave Nickstarter package together so quickly.

Actually the crew sprue looks good for unarmed civilians/bystanders to add moving scatter to a game.  3 or 4 on a larger base wandering around and getting in the way.  I might have to buy me a box.

So first one assembled.

Decided on 30mm lipped bases (to match existing not "A Galaxy Far etc" figures).
This face has a slight Gerry Anderson look to it.

There are some slight mould lines - this photograph shows one I missed on the arm.

And some comparisons.
I used an existing lipped base with an infill (originally intended for a Knight Models Legion of Doom figure) so the top is not flush but stands a bit proud.
William Killian (of course).

A very unfinished Anvil Industries PMC with Jungle Fighter head.

Classic Plastic Space Marine
(https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2Zsk1Mpoowc/YI1DMZrVu6I/AAAAAAAAH4I/z5algoXC47c9imMtMztJWaQsOh0Io7-egCLcBGAsYHQ/s500/stargrave-crew-1-7.png)

It will be a while before I get round to painting this.

"Classic" plastic Space Marine?  Without a proper beaky helmet and studs on the left shoulder pad?  I think not.  That Johnny-come-lately late-90s fig might as well be Primaris when it comes to "classic" cred.  :)

Nice to see some good sprue shots and a parts breakdown, though.  Bodies look a bit more static stance-wise than I thought.

Like these?
When I based them, I was going through a "slotta bases are evil" phase. The circular bases were punched out from plastic card using a sharpened piece of conduit. After I lost access to a belt sander, I started cutting square bases.

William Killian for scale:
They are mainly the original blue plastic figures, though I know there are probably some of the flesh coloured ones as well. If you peer at the photograph above, you can see the blue plastic where one (of two) of them has had the rocket launcher removed for use with the third and fourth generation Ultramarines. I have not started to cannibalise them for the mark six heads - I still have a few RTB-01 sprues with heads left. though none of them are blue sprues.

Ultra Vanilla Wombles are the one true Womble:
The top left five are Forge World.
The two bottom right are the only ones built using RTB-01 torsos, perched on the second generation plastic multi-pose Mk7 Marine legs (the second generation original torsos had fixed heads).
That was posted in 2012.
https://ultravanillasmurf.blogspot.com/2012/12/work-in-glacial-progress.html (https://ultravanillasmurf.blogspot.com/2012/12/work-in-glacial-progress.html)
Not much has happened to them since then (see post title).

And now back to Stargrave...

Yeah, that's the good stuff.  Proper beaky wombles.  :)

Still got about three of them left on the sprues in green plastic.  Saving them for when I'm feeling nostalgic.

Back when 40k was affordable. I still have great memories of going to the Plaza GW store with my late dad and coming home with £100 of blisters, when IG were 5 for £2.50  :o

Aside from Blood Bowl, GW finally priced me out for the most part.  $40 for a single hero model, or slightly less for twenty Stargrave models?  Not to mention that each new GW model tries to outdo itself as far as being as highly breakable as possible.

Same here and that was back when their games were actually fun to play.  Now you need the main rules, army rules and two or three other books to find each and every special rule for each model.

Hell yeah, I want to like it, but how many special bloody rules and exceptions can one person look at and remember. :-[

Playing 40K 9th is like playing a game of "Fizzbin" if you know your Star Trek lol

Ain't this the damn truth? I have no idea how people get into the GW hobby nowadays. It's just so expensive.

Moving on...

So most members of your crew cost credits, Runners and Recruits are however free (but probably not worth learning their names).

Runners are unarmoured, but being unencumbered move faster.

For consistency, three of them have the revolver arm (one each are supplied per sprue).
That one looks like a Cold Weather version of a United Federation of Planets away team kit.

The fourth Runner is from a second sprue.

Recruits are lightly armoured and again are armed with a pistol.

So next up, a Pathfinder.
The Pathfinder is former military and kept his high-tech Carbine (from the Trooper' sprue). An axe from the Frostgrave Barbarians sprue provided the Hand Weapon. The grenades are from the Mercenaries sprue. The body is the Crew body with the chest plate.

The head is from Anvil, their necks are wider and deeper than the Stargrave one, but nothing a 3mm drill could not handle.

Though I have not yet built sufficient figures for a crew (let alone paint anything) I decided to build some opponents.

Though there are no current crew or pirates using shotguns, I thought they would be suitable for a security guard.

The shotgun will dissuade any ruffians, and the light armour will give him reason to stand his ground.

Built from the Crew body with the shoulder straps, a Crew shotgun and a Mercenary light helmet, he will be standing guard outside a bank or storage facility
(https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KhhdCBz93Dc/YJAk3VU5WNI/AAAAAAAAH6Q/i3oIFS-yDQUNNmPFplgeBtsOWxdgBx0-gCLcBGAsYHQ/s517/stargrave-security-1-2.png)

Not sure if a Hand Weapon would be a good idea.

Though there are no current crew or pirates using shotguns,

Not quite true.  Any model that would normally be armed with a carbine has the option to trade it in for a shotgun instead.  Trading 12" of range for +2 damage if you hit makes it a hard choice which to go with, but the shotguns will certainly pay off better in dense terrain like urban or starship corridor environs.

Must have missed that, where in the rules does it say that?

Here are the three security guards.

Combat Armour provides enhanced protection, and the Carbine provides the firepower.

It's easy to overlook.  Not the most obvious spot to stick a fairly important rule, at least when it comes to how you outfit your carbine-toting soldiers.

The Stargrave arms work well with the Broken figures (I have three or four figures using the Broken bodies and Stargrave arms undercoated).

The Broken weapons and arms are quite complicated, have a look here for a guide:

Won't be using the Northstar plastics but his Rogue Star metals are an excellent way to start imho, and and good pricing too. Always wanted to do something with generic old-school looking rogues, bots and aliens so this is as good an opportunity as ever. Got a few Alternative Armies rogues laying around somewhere and of course will be getting myself anything else for grabs, as long as it looks cool  :D.

It's nice to see the Rogue Stars range getting some new life through Stargrave, those minis are far too nice to fade out teh way their parent game seems to have.

Alternative Armies has quite a lot of 28mm stuff that works well for Stargrave, including many of the old Ion Age figs and most of the Ganesha Games range.

Yeah, I got a couple of those "Shia Khan humies turned traitor" and they are excellent:

I feel A.A. is a bit underrated these days, they've got some great ( and affordable ) miniatures available.

Agreed.  Can't beat them for sculpt variety with the 15mm stuff either - every single mini in a pack is different usually.  Lovely batch of definitely-not-Star-Frontiers figs too, which tickles my nostalgia bone.  And some of their (relatively) recent 28mm scifi reminds me strongly of Rogue Trader era GW, which I'd contend is a good thing.

I have a box of the original 15mm figures I gamed with in the mid-'90s somewhere. There was a games shop in Consett that stocked them.

For Stargrave I am generally going for the North Star plastics (Star and Frost), together with Anvil resins, Maelstrom's Edge plastics and possibly any other plastics that match size and stylistically (looking at you Great Escape Games).

The GEG kit also looks like a good source for left-handed pistols, which a are a bit lacking in Stargrave at the moment.  Hard to do southpaws or pistoleros.  Hopefully the female crew/merc and scavenger kits help with that.

Yes, there is a shortage of left arms without weapons in the Stargrave sets, requiring some creativity. If you want a left handed shooter....

What with One Thing and Another, there is no Colours this year, so to make up for it, I ordered some of the new robots from Anvil Industries.

They have two ranges, the Regiments (Human) sized ones and the larger Eco-Lords sized ones.

They are multi-part, multi-choice figures in white resin. The resin loves superglue, they are nearly as easy to assemble as plastic kits - the arms are easier as they have location holes in the torsos.

Here are the components (Exo-Lords on the left, Regiments on the right).
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgqhUBKiJKNhg5QM3JIdmzhWbwnGlPNk34lQajMYa0oNxuz_PLajE4RlJxxaEXrvafqmn-c_jiW4hOHIPIDJDIWcE4_jXs9WyISzP9sm7XzLdXS4LK5NVtyvae6YmKuz7p1Bp40iim8XflSEFb3xMOeUUnbYEuWt00Xr68pWVrFYKixN7bwxhK1KdWi0Q=s500)
The Exo-Lord sized ones are armed with Widowmaker rifles with box magazines, the Regiments sized ones with Phase SMGs. The Regiments ones can use the any of the Anvil weapons that use the "pistol-grip" attachment.

They have a range of different heads, but I decided on the Cyclops style for both as they look the most like a Combat droid.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhPxlONTcCLMu_gkyDgD-8TUcqIo3Kc8vdEwCCft5KLugT-4Ul68krJnQ1EsiW29QghFsmrJtFmpO5Ew-KuNfu0mnY0e6YV-2vsIMVfdZNJ3mdIi9qZ5T-iYyL0Ydjqr9q_UUKHrWGQOs8xeghQXcZUtCwJ2zgBPi9fcr9QGn1Ea5PPcOVHkXGIkJap5g=s500)

Here are two assembled and a Stargrave Trooper for scale.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEh6hTd_XMn1WGgwVaETEmuEaeu_5kCjMrGb6BwmIBD3W3XGGSV-LKZP4xL_vfAdiz9s9zESkKVms-QPdTdm4frD8T0s-zklyV3BS9IF2ZcqMc8uFzIy7CksBHifZKK5KDBJ4YoKjzFmampBAp6SSAKz0pyoLahxDiPGohqN3XeV0oP6bAZ3rdkwQ4hNyw=s500)

And to show why they larger robots are referred to as Exo-Lord sized.

Great stuff UVS. I was a bit hesitant on the Stargrave plastics but have really come around to them and now love them.

And of course Anvil Industries stuff always looks good. Nice to see them doing robots now.

Thanks, the Anvil robots are great, though I am going to have to re-watch Chappie before the next order. A wider choice of weapons for the Eco-Lords ones would be nice (a Tetrapod with twin gatlings is fine for support but...)

I have the (female) Drop Troopers to look at shortly.

Something Borg like would be a nice alternative. I’m thinking along the lines of the Mantic Dreadball revenants. I’m not a huge fan of zombies. Won’t stop me getting Q37 though. What you have done so far is great! I especially like the figure with the GEG gunslinger bits. Lovely!

Maybe take a look at the Strain figs from Sedition Wars?  Not Borg but definitely horrific techno-zombies, and the last I looked they were pretty cheap owing the game flopping like a 600 pound high-diver.

More thoughts on Quarantine 37.
The really good idea is the mini-solo campaign - you create a full ten man team and then split it into a Captain's half team and a First Mate's half team. There are then two sets of two scenarios - each half has its own sub campaign (one zombies, the other bugs). This is a great idea for an introductory game, mini-participation game or fun to play during the next Quarantine. And on a two foot by two foot board.

The "zombies" are interestingly designed and certainly will make for some fun games (the optional reanimation rules and - in a campaign -potential that previously wounded soldiers can turn are worth including).

Regular zombie, or Bloater?

Next off on a bug hunt...

They are definitely horror as much as scifi, true.

Same goes for Privateer's Cryx Mechanithralls, Bile Thralls, and Cephalyx Drudges, unfortunately.  More zombie than Borg.

The bits on the right are a scanner turret and dish that plugs int to hole above the wing.
3D Printed (and the cockpit and body are hollow - but inaccessible) with only minor print lines.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEg9flAc9ENBQSTW0kQIp6fsN7XEeHAiCccTnA-OMRM1J5DaZuiQYBdOfCO6CONP_3b6nqtCVG_xkkdMLKkDDjvtgQV0AakBEitIn36AGhbyKvhM4tZ0wZlA8IRcAeDMoF1R3fEmien0lIlC_Y9-Z5PWQJEZOQDGzKJKUvFlqYflecMWAOjjahKkSfVpxA=s500)

Not quite sure who Vando is, but he has fitted the shuttle out with four cannons in a pod on the right wing, plus another two on the hull roof.

They have a number of other interesting vehicles/spacecraft.

Unfortunately the URL on the packaging does not connect to a valid site and my Google-Fu did not provide me with an alternative.

Vando is the Vandolorian from the new(ish) Star Wars series on Disney+.

I’m fairly sure that you bought a 3D print of this STL file

https://imperialterrain.com/products/vandos-ship-digital-stl-file?_pos=3&_sid=595192165&_ss=r

That website also has STL files for a few different ships that could exist in the Star Wars universe as well as a link to 3D printers who can print and ship them if you don’t have access to your own 3d printer.

Have you considered the Mantic sci-fi zombies at all? They're hard plastic, multipart, obviously sci-fi, and look like they'd be a great match for the Stargrave plastics. They also do some "Plague Troopers" in hard plastic, but they might look a bit too much like mutants with tattered weapons (which they are!) to be good Zombies.

So, following the recommendations here, I ordered a box of plague Zombies along with the backfill order for the now late and lamented TWD:AOW.
The box contains four identical sprues of five figures each.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcNZdl_AH-RIotYi0kvg3VeyYM4qKMOvQyWltBhSIrUWGgHpqzVMDfeYlfoKyyVhxXPonzhKW1jJQ1OYJxUFpqnm-xg0vHj-rwTUp9fSPtUZ726NPxoZ-vqQT5HSRj83DbzFed3rHqnC1A1JNz5WkICHUfcFLDvSjkk2nRejwTuzV7AKEFAgZuoOnmJQ/s636/plaguezombie-4.png)

The figures have to be assembled carefully, the heads and bodies only work in some combinations.

Here is the first two and a Quarantine 37 metal zombie.

One of two refugees that make up part of my Five Parsecs from Home campaign.
When I was rolling up the crew, two had the same "Alien Oppressed Human" background and I rolled up two Infantry Lasers.

Wargames Atlantic Cannon Fodder body and arms. The head is from the Stargrave Crew set.

Some filling and details toads.

So, one of the crew for my Five Parsecs from Home has a religious background, and ended up receiving a shotgun from the weapons rolls.

Originally I was going to use one of the Frostgrave Wizards bodies, but decided that one of the female Wizards II bodies would make a good base. The arms are from the Stargrave Crew II set.

I wanted something different for the head, and noticed that the Great Escape Games Gunfighters II figures had compatible heads.

That’s a cool looking kitbash! It looks like all the parts will meld together in the paint job. I’m looking forward to seeing how it turns out.

I like where you're going with these modular wreckage bits, but the MDF edges on the panels look far too clean in my opinion. It all depends how OCD you get over your toy soldiers, but I'd definitely have to whip the Proxon out and rough up those edges, they seem far too regular as is to sell the idea of wreckage.

I was thinking what to do with the Salvager Family (and robot) from Crooked Dice that I had ordered earlier in the year:
https://crooked-dice.co.uk/product/salvager-family/ (https://crooked-dice.co.uk/product/salvager-family/)
https://crooked-dice.co.uk/product/salvager-bot/ (https://crooked-dice.co.uk/product/salvager-bot/)

There are four humans and one robot, which is nearly a base crew for Five Parsecs From Home.

So I thought I would add another figure, dressed similarly, hence one of the pilots from https://crooked-dice.co.uk/product/pilots/ (https://crooked-dice.co.uk/product/pilots/)
I had already based and undercoated the pilot.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTetvemcE1zBtgSszcHdOmzXSd4UwM9Bs-nIOloZNgNwotkCp68Be3MGJgJ5mAoLKnlQOg544TDdv_N3B1mll0rbn39vDnDWn6Dhi0P4bP5CmOAfmq7zwIP6u4Ji4k-cSXJTxgc7N4rNKoIXcNZNhlKLzKIg5mNTqAUn-WUAaIvUrxtXFcQP1JgZVr2w/s16000/byrnson-1.png)

Character stats will be by picking the options from the tables to match my interpretations of the characters.

A small 'bot from the Crooked Dice 'Bot Trader set.

So, the first painted crew figure.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7kBRsn_79K6xP8yD8cFt3ttnhB6JiIMSZjNnSeSy7iHVUNWJ6ykiOEbUzSAMLrj-lPUP7J5TVLaQg6S0STCsn_qQSWcwNzPYc1SaRmtQTEYBlbvEUgqA6-IxZ3-4bQN8mCJyTPT3TYXeyx4-hOlpU0tgwrm6sf-czZxAGRedJL3vpLLC9RYtFAH8FLC4T/s536/cannon-fodder-2-1-6.png)
The figure uses a Cannon Fodder II body and head and arms from the Stargrave Crew II set.

Unlike the Cannon Fodder I set, the arms (at least the non two handed weapon ones) are compatible - I have not checked the distance across the shoulders yet.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTeXnAAJDWM1fPjM2j1QrX6K41JPKWALjhp19GnoYCn2UaxiTGiUcNUeb5GqL26FIYBjLEU6-0iZh3pGGoP2hMFTpIflLk7N1xM2m2zIc35fgqtS5-Sk_bMB43aVxz4fhhqrxnJspcN0UxqQQckZ2za3wNzNTi05qN8a_m7DI1dNwq4PQHi7MDbDis0vay/s530/cannon-fodder-2-1-2.png)

Now to paint the rest of them.
