Title: Looking for a film ...
Post by: Admiral Benbow on September 08, 2009, 02:28:59 PM
I'm a great fan of this "Mountains of the moon" film, but many years ago I've seen a similar film about explorers struggling through Africa and fighting with the natives which impressed me even more. The problem is, I can't remember it's name and never found it again. The only thing my poor old brain saved is something about a "black sun". Not much, I know, but let's give it a try here ...

Was it in colour or black and white?

Snows of Kilimanjaro? or any of the old Johnny Weissmuller Tarzan movies?

"Land der Schwarzen Sonne"? Thatīs the Glen/Bergin-Burton/Speke movie, whose English title was "Mountains of the Moon".

'Land der schwarzen Sonne' is the german title for 'Mountains of the Moon' about Burton & Speke with Patrick Bergin.

Edit: Chris, you beat me

So the film he thought of that was better than "Mountains of the Moon" is actually "Mountains of the Moon" in German? If true, then that would be funny.   lol

If it isn't that then how about this: There was quite a good TV movie called "Forbidden Territory: Stanley's Search for Livingstone" which has a similar vibe to "Mountains of the Moon." It had Aidan Quinn and Nigel Hawthorne in it.

There was also a similar 1939 black and white production called "Stanley and Livingstone" with Spencer Tracy as Stanley. Both are worth a look, unless my memory is tricking me again.

the second picture looks like "brokeback Africa"  :-*

You might want to check the "films set in Africa" list on Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Films_set_in_Africa
and here is another list of films featuring the character Livingstone
http://www.imdb.com/character/ch0063679/
explorers in Africa against natives is rather generic....

there is a novel about a bengal boy in India during the build of the Uganda railway who walks the traces of the great explorers with the same title - though I don't know if there is a Film about it

Thanks for all your good advice, but I don't think I found it yet. This wiki list about films set in Africa was a good idea, but I checked it and didn't find that film. I think I will watch "Land der Schwarzen Sonne" again in the next days, maybe I'll get some more recollections about this other film ...
