The Portuguese Restoration War (Portuguese: Guerra da Restauração) was the war between Portugal and Spain that began with the Portuguese revolution of 1640 and ended with the Treaty of Lisbon in 1668, bringing a formal end to the Iberian Union. The period from 1640 to 1668 was marked by periodic skirmishes between Portugal and Spain, as well as short episodes of more serious warfare, much of it occasioned by Spanish and Portuguese entanglements with non-Iberian powers. Spain was involved in the Thirty Years' War until 1648 and the Franco–Spanish War until 1659, while Portugal was involved in the Dutch–Portuguese War until 1663.
In the seventeenth century and afterwards, this period of sporadic conflict was simply known, in Portugal and elsewhere, as the Acclamation War. The war established the House of Braganza as Portugal's new ruling dynasty, replacing the House of Habsburg who had been united with the Portuguese crown since the 1581 succession crisis.
With this in mind i started painting some miniatures for some skirmish games.
The first 3 are Bloody miniatures with a small conversion of a woman fighting allongside is men. Probably not common but the minute i saw the miniature i thought on doing this conversion.
Also did a conversion of a Bicorne dismounted dragoon with a head swap and plumes sculped.
More to come.

Those Bloody miniatures are showing up everywhere lately, aren't they? :)
Always good to see conflicts that are less well known to those of us in the English-speaking world. Nice one, Rui.

Interesting stuff mate, looking forward to seeing more :)

Very interesting ! it is one of my long term projects in the near future, painting some Portuguese to fight my Spaniards. this summer there will be a new book dealing with Portuguese and Spanish uniforms and flags from 1660-80, so hopefuly, we will have more info on that matter.
Cheers!

There are, in addition to a number of more scholarly tomes, a number of titles on the Guerra da Restauração in the Tribuna da História series (semi Osprey like paper backs) that Rui is probably already familiar with.

By no means authoritative but the series as a whole are good value for money.

Yes! I own a couple of them; Elvas and Montes Claros, they are quite nice, I can read more or less Portuguese, but sadly, no good colour plates with uniforms and flags, at least in the two books I have.
Cheers

Chema1986 and Carlos, thank you for your help.
I own some of those books and they are nice and well searched.
Its a pitty they dont have color plates like the osprey books and reference to the flags used.

Mounted officer, Bicorne miniature.

Well, after more than a year without doing anything to this project here it is again with new updates and hoppefully for a while.
More Bloody figures and some Bicorne and Renegade as portuguese.
I wanted to give simple colors as if some are mere civilians with their own clothes.
-
Nice project! I will follow it with interest, and may start my own! I hope you found all the info you need in the book by Bruno Mugnai (Helion & Co) is the best out there on this subject :)

A nice collection taking shape Rui 8)

Chema1986, i havent bought the book yet. :D
I´m using the books i have and paint my own way. I havent found evidence of uniformed units so each figure has its own accoutrements/clothes.
Thanks Richard. Groing fast. A few more. :)

I love it Rui!
That’s what I really like about our hobby: take a range, adapt it ro your local background and open up all the „other“ theatres of war!
I wasn’t really aware of the War of Acclamation, but now I’m really interested.

Nice work. Some of those wouldn't look out of place shooting Dutchmen in Pernambuco.

Thank you for the kind comments. :)

Yup. They would work well. :)

Wonderful project. Gives those with 30yrs War or ECW figures another arena in which to fight.
