So it's tough to get some straight up answers for one as google-fu challenged as myself, but it seems the spray Dullcote is no longer being made. Out of Stock for months at Amazon and the various hobby places I go to online and in meat space.
I use Krylon's Crystal Clear Gloss spray for initial coats for protection before finishing with a matte spray. I have used the Crystal Clear Matte spray and did not like it as much as Testor's.
I am curious what other spray matte lacquers people here are using?

I used Testors for years, second only to Letraset Dullcote that was made for typesetters back in the day, but quite some time ago they had to remove toluene from the formula and for me it was not as good. I don't know if they still do a spray or not.
Having tried brand upon brand and all the brush on malarky, a matt varnish to me is like deodorant - spray and go, I put all snobbery aside and tried Humbrol Acrylic Matt spray. Has never let me down, consistently matt, cheap and easily available but I am sure others will have had different experiences.

Another ex-Dullcoter here. I now use Windsor & Newton Professional matt varnish. Their spray cans are readily available from art shops here in England.

Dullcote may or may not be gone, but is certainly hard to come by, and I too am searching for the second best matte finish now.
Testors went under two years ago, Rustoleum acquired the lines, but have not been providing reliable stocks.
-
It's very possible it is going to be gone...or will be rebranded. As I understand it Rustoleum bought out Testors/Model Masters and is killing off the majority of that product line (which seems..weird).

I've used Humbrol matt spray with success. Only had frosting on a figure twice but that was my fault for leaving them outside too long.
-
Like the OP, I would gloss them matt varnish figures as a matter of course. However, according to an interesting war-games magazine article I've read, modern varnishes are durable enough to do without supplementary coats, and according to Science (the author was something of a chemistry wizz)the added coats do nothing but shrink your purse. I've found this article to be accurate from my own experience.
As for reliable Matt varnishes, I can give a +1 to Humbrol, and recommend the GW Satin varnish as 'up to scratch'.

AK Interactive Ultra Matte is very good,as is Ammo from Migs Matte.
-
I keep hearing stories about Dullcote not being available but then the first Google search shows up results like this:
https://www.modeldisplayproducts.co.uk/testors-dullcote
Other stockists do seem to be available.

This.
If you invest in an airbrush and matt varnishes from AK you will get a fantastic result...and in the end is cheaper too. And you can use the airbrush for many more things too. I think it's my best hobby purchase ever.

Thanks all for the tremendous feedback. Lots of options here to explore, and food for thought. I'm sure I'll find something I'll be happy with now.
Cheers!

Friends here are using Krylon Matte Low Odour spray as a replacement for Dullcote.

Google searches do show Testor's but whenever you follow a link it's invariably Out of Stock, except occasionally the brush on stuff at elevated prices.
I suspect old pages which shops are not taking down.
Just looked on the Testor's website and it's definitely not on there.

Agree with this. If you can actually find it its only in the USA and postage is way to expensive to consider. Also AK Interactive stuff and Mig stuff cannot be shipped to the UK(Brexit again!!)

Large chunks of Testors ranges are being discontinued

Thanks for the most recent info, fellas!
This made me check Amazon, and they list some cans as being available again, though it is 11-15 bucks for a 3 ounce can instead of the 5 it used to be, and it looks like limited quantities.
Maybe if Testors is going leaner by eliminating other lines, they might start producing dullcote again. One can dream...
I have half of one can left, then it's time to review all the options.

I don't have an airbrush, but I have been considering it. Thanks for the information and options!

If you Google ‘Model Shops UK’ you should be able to find a replacement; for example Alclad matte varnish, which is excellent as is all their stuff. The Airbrush Company is also good. However I’ll leave the work up to you as I am in Australia :)

Try Montana "Gold" spray paint clear "Varnish Matt": I used it next to Testors and it works just the same, but comes in normal 400ml cans so it's much cheaper. I think it's number T1010 in their range but I'm not sure.

Just picked up a can of Colour forge matt varnish from Partizan & it’s just as good if not better than the old Testors stuff.
A quick picture below taken in natural light within 5 minutes of spraying

I wasn’t sure that I believed the guy selling it, but I do now lol
