Title: Middle Earth restarted
Post by: Alan Mercer on May 27, 2021, 12:08:55 PM
As the weather has been crap, I have had more time to go through things rather than gardening, so I returned to a project that has been on pause for a while.

The main reason for pausing was a really awful attempt at re- basing my original batch of orcs. Plus, in a fairly characteristic bout of impatience, I tried to correct some shiny varnish poking though in some areas, only to find that the water I used to thin the varnish hadn’t been replaced since cleaning some metallic paint off some brushes. Net result, some of the orcs come with added, if subtle, sparkles.

It’s too much effort to correct all of it, so I have re-based them again, without any casualties this time, and accepted the varnish issue as a visual lesson. Here they are.

Next on the agenda are orc archers and some additional spear/pike/polearm armed orcs to make this into 2 units of 24 and some ‘men of the West’ types.

I love how you achieved a consistent feel in the unit while using components from a range of kits!

These were the inspiration for my orc kitbashing escapades  :)

Great looking orcs. Their weaponry really makes them look menacing - lots of big choppy and pointy things.

Got me singing, "Where there's a whip, there's a way!"
Great looking mob.

Thanks for the comments, always helps me to keep going.

Good call re the whip, I haven’t included a whip wielding maniac yet so I’ll have to have a look around for bits to use.

This is my take on Men of the West. I couldn't find much in the way of plastic that met my vision, so these are mostly metal (A mix of westwind and warlord) but with 1st corps heads, plus a smattering of Conquest Normans as I have some available.

More suited to Arnor I think.

Absolutely terrific!  I particularly like the browns and blacks on the orcs. Really well done.

Another inspiring LOTR thread!

Really like the marching orcs and would certainly be interested in knowing how you made those if you're of course willing to share.

No real secret to these. There’s a whole mix of various kits. Most are Oathmark Goblin torsos, with some Fireforge, Gripping Beast, Frostgrave and Gw torsos. Heads are a mix of Oathmark, Warlord, Frostgrave, and some others I can’t remember, arms are Oathmark, Perry, Fireforge, with some Fireforge polearms added in. Lots of green stuff fur and hoods to cover up awkward joints and cut marks.

So I had a vision of what I wanted, I blu-tacked a few bits together until I liked what I saw and then got completely carried away making them. The variations are endless and it’s actually great fun.  I didn’t buy whole boxes of kits other than Oathmark, but lots of single sprues on eBay.

Thanks for the information managed to spot most manufacturers but had missed some. Think I need some European Mercenaries pikes for conversions  ;)
