Title: East Front 1916 Russians vs Germans/Bulgarians AAR - 1914 Rules
Post by: Captain Darling on June 05, 2021, 12:12:17 PM
After trying them out with a couple of 2 turn run throughs we played our first full game using Great Escape Games 1914 Rules last week, our game based on the 1916 Battle of Geisterwald was located on the eastern front with Russians fighting against Germans & Bulgarians. The Central Powers prevailed at the end of the day after some fierce fighting. The rules reflected the period well and a good time was had by all, the AAR is on our blog.

Here’s a couple of pictures From the night...

Russian Guns defending the heights as German infantry enter the play area in the distance...

How did you find the 1914 rules, we played a fair few games at the start of the year, mainly French vs Germans in 1914. We initially liked the rules, but ultimately the multiple activations put us off a bit, as there seemed too much control. We were playing remotely and I think this meant that the players weren’t using the interrupt mechanism enough.

Hi Fred!
We found the activation system with pre allocated command token the best part of the game. The interruptions and voluntary initiative changes is where the players really had to start thinking! One thing, initially the players took a while deciding which units to allocate the command tokens too and totalling them but by the end of the game everyone was used to it.
Having played the WW II Iron Cross version of this command system we found the pre allocation really suited the WW I version where historically command control was more rigid allowing less fluidity of action. We’ll be playing these again regularly.
Cheers!

Could this rule system work for 28mm?

Thanks guys!

Armchair...I think like most Rules you can play with any size figures with tweaks. The rules state they are for 15mm figures (surprise surprise GEG have released a range of 15mm WW I figures 😉) on bases with 50mm frontages. Each base represents a Company. We are using 10mm figures on bases 40mm Wide with no changes to the rules. I’d say you could scale up just need a bigger table (our games have been on 1500mm x 1000mm areas with space to spare).

Cheers!
