Title: Do You Own a Republican Roman force?
Post by: Easy E on June 09, 2021, 07:50:37 PM
This is just a quick survey of the users on this forum.

I am curious how many of you own a Republican Roman force?

If you do, what scale is it and what basing do you use?

What style is is?  Is it an early Hoplite, Early Triplex Acies, Mid-Polybian/Manipular, or Later- Cohort based?

What minis do you use?

What rules do you use to play with your little citizens?

For me, it is the following:
I own 160 Romans in 28mm figures.  They are single based and made into units of 10.  They can cover Early Triplex Acies all the way to Later-Cohort styles with some tweaks.  Mine are all Victrix.  I use them currently for Clash of Spears, Wars of the Republic, and Hail Caesar.

I will confess to owning a 28mm Republican Roman force. Classic "Polybian" to fight my Carthaginians and Seleucids.  They are mainly Renegade Miniatures with some Aventine. The Renegade Cavalry horses were just too huge. The Hastatii, Principes and Triarii were based 2 x 2 figure bases for Hail Caesar, but I now play To the Strongest using several bases per unit.

I have a Roman Republican army based on the Second Punic War about 4 legions including allied Italians plus some extras allies for different periods such as Celts, Spanish and Numidians.  28mm allmost all Victrix.

I use Hail Ceasar with their army lists as the basis for organisation. Infantry are generally based on 40mm square bases and cavalry 50mm square, with 4 and 2 figures respectively.

A legion consists of 16 Velite, 24 Hastati, 24 Princepes and 12 Triarii along with a command base of 3 figures. Cavalry are organised in small units of 6 figures per legion with the Italians having three such units.

I have Polybian Romans in 28mm and 15mm. The 28s are mainly Agema Miniatures plastics with metal cavalry from 1st Corps. They are on single bases. The 15s are by Essex and are based to the DBX pattern.

Rules-wise, they haven’t been on the table as much as I would like. The big fellows have been used in a few games of Hail Caesar, and the little ones in DBA.

I need to get back to work on the 28s at some point, but keep getting sidetracked!

Punic Wars is my strongest suit in DBA, and Republican Romans the largest of the lot.  Primarily Old Glory 15s.  I don't get too fussed about armour differences in 15mm.  I use these for the later end of the Camillan lists through Polybian and early end of the Marian lists.  Can field up to 5x DBA Polybian for big battle games.

Here's all of them on the field for a Battle of Tunis 255 big battle scenario game facing Carthage and allies:

Yep. 10mm, Scipionic, mixture of Pendraken and Newline. The legions are based for triplex acies operations, but seldom use them (it's a recipe for getting your flank turned!). IACTA ALEA EST home-brew rules.

I do and they are Agema and old Wargames Factory Republican plastic infantry that I have had  for several years but have to confess that they are still in the "to do" pile.
They will be based individually for our own home written small action rules and "Infamy, Infamy", Broken Legions etc.

I do a 15mm one and I'm currently refurbishing it.  It's for the Macedonian and Punic Wars.

The figures are from Chariot, QRF, Essex, Corvus Belli and Forged in Battle.

I have a Republican Roman army,
part of a matched pair in 28mm. Rome & Carthage.
Figures nearly all painted by a friend, Pete Duckworth.
Various manufacturers, but always used for DBA.

I would quite like to paint up some of the more
modern sculps, probably for a skirmish like Fistful of lead.

I have Republican Romans in 6mm.   Figures are all Rapier Miniatures, on 40mmx20mm bases.  Slightly over 2000 figures.  For the rules I use, which strongly  support using multiple lines, these would be the equivalent of a two combined consular armies of four Roman legions and four Latin Ala.  They can be any version from about 300 B.C. to the time of Julius Caesar.  I left the army commanders out of the picture when I took it.

Start of the battle of Asculum.  Legions (on the right) vs phalanx

Caesarean era Romans in 28mm, but they also do fine for 2nd Punic war with the addition os some Triarii. About 200 figures or so. All based on 60mm wide bases, 3 to a base.
They get used for To the Strongest and Saga Age of Hannibal

I have a Republican Roman force in 1/72. HAT - some 216 close order infantry, 48 velites, 32 cavalry - also possess smaller collections of Carthaginian, Numidian, Spanish and Gallic in the same period. I mostly use home grown rules written by a friend as an homage to the Battle of the River Trimsos in Don Featherstone's War Games.

Republican Roman 1/72 plastic figures by Hat.  Similar numbers to Zingara.  Based on 60x40mm bases to play Command & Colours or To the Strongest.

Polybian 15MM Essex, based for FoG but used for Impetus, Sword and Spear and now Fantastic Battles.

I have a couple of DBA armies in 15mm one of 'Marian Romans' all Essex and another of 'Camillian Romans' which is mainly Essex but with a few Museum Miniatures add-ons. They are based on the standard 15mm DBA base sizes.

Seeing the terrific quality of miniatures out there these days I am tempted to have a go in 28mm at some stage, maybe for Saga or another 'warband' type ruleset individually based on round bases.

Nah. I have only ever liked "proper" Romans i.e Early Imperial in lorica segmentata.
Currently building two different armies of those.
By the way, Crucifixion is a doddle

Punic Wars, 28mm, single based for use in FFoL or Clash of Spears.  All Victrix models, with two metal Fighting Hedgehog figures.  Only partly done so far (two officers, 8 Principes, and 8 Allied).

I have a Republican roman force for Clash of Spears and Saga. The figures are mostl Aventine. The officer and his bannerman are Relic minis and the Samnites are A&A. I painted the Principes, hastatis and the velites. All others plus all officers, musicians and bannermen are painted by my friend Graham.

Yes, a 15mm legion painted and based according to the FoG army list. A mixture of Baueda (from their Marian Roman kickstarter a few years ago) and Forged in Battle figures, and perhaps one or two ranks of old Corvus Belli. Each cohort (except for the 1st below, which is double) is made of 4 figures per stand and six stands per cohort. Ten cohorts in all. I painted according to Vegetius who claimed that each cohort had a different shield pattern to differentiate them on the battle field. So that is why my legion has various shield patterns.

and another, unpainted, 3/4 legion (including Baueda unarmored/penal) with (FiB) Iberian allies to represent a certain squirrelly but not very well equipped legion in Hispania during the later Republican period.

I have Punic Wars Romans but with the ambition to have enough spear armed Principes to be able to field them against my Pyrrhic and Etruscan armies. Approximately 300 28mm figures, mainly Foundry but with a few units and lots of command figures drafted in from all sorts of ranges. I mainly use Piquet rules. They include rules for the Roman Triplex Acies formation that work very well.

Not Foundry, Agema Triarii.

Several. In 6mm, still struggling for a rule set. In 15mm, as a matched opponent for my Carthaginians, using DBMM, and in 28mm for Infamy, Infamy.

I have Polybian Romans and Allied legion in 28mm - Agema and Victrix.

I have Marian/Caesarean Romans in 25/28mm (Warlord, Old Glory, Wargames Factory and Wargames Foundry).

I also have a 15mm Blue Moon Republican Roman (Caesarean) army.

(Then I could go on with EIR and Late Roman ... not to mention opponents...).

All based individually. 28mm on Canadian nickels (magnetic and cheaper than washers) and 15mm on washers.  I thought a lot about group basing but sabot bases/movement trays work just fine and allow FAR more flexibility in rules usage.

Got a 28mm Roman force for the Punic Wars and previously owned a large 15mm one as well, playing DBA/M, Armati, WAB and Hail Caesar over the years.
