Title: CoC - Winter Storm campaign (scenario 14, updated 24 Sept)
Post by: Sgt_T on June 13, 2021, 12:43:00 PM
Played the third scenario of the Winter Storm campaign: The defense of Pokhlebin.
The Soviets must attack the German held village of Pokhlebin and would need to cross open ground.

I read the posts by TacticalPainter on the Bloody Bucket campaign and was a bit worried on how to cross the open ground with the Soviets. When rolling for who takes which side, I wound up with the Germans however so I now just needed to worry about stopping the Soviets.

From TacticalPainter's posts I also learned not to deploy to quickly when defending. This worked but my decision to deploy the senior leader before the rest of the platoon had been deployed almost backfired because of a fast flanking move by the Soviets, annihilating a German team in close combat.

Great stuff Sgt_T. Winter Storm was our first campaign we ‘intended’ to play when it came out but my opponents lack of sufficient Russians put it on hold and then he got distracted by other things  :) (a common tale in gaming). I’m now just doing everything myself with the intent to run it with other friends at my local club so thank you for the inspiration/motivation.

Interesting report.
Has anyone successfully attacked across open ground
under CofC ?
If yes, how?
Smoke?  Luck? Poor defender?  ??????

Has.been if my experiences of trying it in CoC are anything to go by its about as miserable as reports would suggest attempting the real thing is - so maybe a point in CoCs favour in terms of modelling the situation well. Maybe this should be my next game/project of a few repeated tests trying to cross open ground successfully, actually it’ll be suitable for solo as the defenders are pretty static. I think it’ll be a situation where you need everything in your favour, a big bucket of luck, as many CoC dice as possible and the wind behind you.

Sgt_T having read your other posts on WInter Storm I seem to remember the sheer number of buildings needed in the second scenario was another factor that slowed/stopped us getting too far. I like your solution for re-sizing the playing area (especially as we play in 15mm) that may be the way to get it to the tabletop for us.

Keep up the good work,

Thanks BALM. I think you are correct, it would have been
very costly in real life. Nice idea to try it 'Solo', maybe even
as a Co-operative game. Several players, each with a squad
or two, against a 'Plumpire' in charge of the defenders.
Might use that idea for when I (ever) get into Indo-China.

I know a tank can’t move off the line in the phase in which it arrives, but if you are trying to get over open ground, maybe try getting it moving forward as quickly as possible, then get your infantry behind it.  It’s a useful shield and if it gets stopped in its tracks, it will still afford cover and block lines of sight- all useful if you are trudging infantry over.

Thanks people.

Indeed. The "moving hard cover" was on my mind too when I went over the options.
Another one would be deploying smoke (if your force is equipped with it).
You can of course reduce the effectiveness of incoming fire by inflicting shock. But this doesn't work when your opponent bides his time and does not deploy until you try to cross the open ground.
Getting your troops in position and waiting for a double 6 and at least one 3 or 2 on your command roll is the next best thing. Being able to move twice before your opponent can react increases your chance of getting across the open ground. Just don't roll low for movement! And make sure your opponent does not have a full chain of command dice available for interrupts. Having a full chain of command dice yourself also helps to interrupt units trying to fire at your troops and giving them an extra move (although you cannot interrupt an interrupt).

I know it's not the most popular choice, but unless the Soviets got wildly different national characteristics in Winter Storm (I got the pdf, but haven't read it in ages), the preliminary bombardment may be an attractive choice of support. Even without the Soviet national characteristic it once ruined a game for me. :D A bit luck-dependant, but when it works, it's very nice.

Wouldn't quite know how to deploy enough smoke as a Soviet player to get across, but maybe I'm missing something.

Anyway, very nice battle report! Concise, yet flavourful. Thanks for sharing. Makes me want to get a game of CoC on the table again. :)

I have followed a number of games posted here about crossing open ground.
The problem is I see it is a flat gaming table.
Real life terrain is not like that.
The way I have dead spots and dips in the ground is put 1/2 to 1 inch sloped styrofoam under my gaming mat.
If figures are on the flat behind the styrofoam, they can't be seen.
If standing on the slope and half or less can be seen, then they get a cover modifier.
Over half, the are out in the open.
Works great for me, cheap and easy to do.

Tactical movement, covering fire, smoke, overwatch. As per real life. Still dicey.

Agreed. To be honest: the scenario description does state that the open terrain is actually undulating ground. In CoC, troops benefit from light cover when they assume a "tactical stance", so they could move cautiously across (almost) open ground by making the most of the dead spots and dips in the ground.

We played scenario 4 of the campaign: The road to Majorski.
The Germans were apparently using their Blitzkrieg drug because they dealt the Soviets a series of successive blows from which they couldn't recover.

The end came swift when the Soviet Leytenant was driven off table towards a, most likely, fatefull end at the hands of a Commissar.

The Soviet Maxim MMG and T34 never managed to fire a shot during the entire game.

Again, a very interesting battle report. And again I'll have to point out how much I enjoy your concise way of telling the story. Mostly because I know I couldn't do it in that fashion. :D

After this fairly one-sided game surely the luck of battle must swing back next time!

Scenario 5 of the Winter Storm campaign! This time a Soviet convoy is attacked by the Germans.

An unexpected victory for the Soviets as they ran the German gauntlet, taking fire from two Panzer III's.

Two out of three vehicles made it. The hero of the day was the Soviet Leytenant who faced two squads of German panzergrenadiere during a heroic (but short) last stand after trying to rescue his Maxim crew.

The last scenario of the first chapter of Winter storm. This time the Soviets defended Pokhlebin against a German attack. It started out bad for the Germans. They lost a squad and their only support vehicle early in the game.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjYuC4eNZGxt07_aqoydwdiymNkEICNMXk0-FIE5EBqdECljnTVfSb7TbeNJ3A9Adbti5DOZoOxXt4gtoEQC4Cwxo-zIXdAAJ2tGkIwDZ7FHKnvHx5EEHYxKVeYWOVAYJf0qK-se6ij4zXh0LUJBxCO4s6CuewL_71m-rtq6fSnzxM7ooAhyZCr0bOqdQ=s1555)

But then the German pioneer squad with a flamethrower was able to burn a hole in the Soviet defences.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiDqxnncrdYFWi-vFuC1X8M-iJgFcimEgf4lLQR-8zGZZvl1a-8nkFAA9lyqMx1fnP5kRnR3ieo6d9kCo6FOCe9peNAIJfES2JSdkjPhjIlJDXPdcliFb6Jwu5ehUUZrASDrHgK7jR180TqEDBXlGlnECeu2U0RWow_ax9jmwhg_xeZJwdCueGxjWdFXA=s1075)

This allowed the Germans to enter the village and the Soviet morale collapsed.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiNsjZqXFpPTo0fFY-HqOS84yYajIFVDAPE1lKYyEiQPDnIiaSogcWOstrjHRbws9J3-gynynJyLJlPUDaVYpyibmUHubNcVu2Eh1e1AD3micR6NL5E3P60DwLNLm0aqK-0XWh6BoYRSSPfJPB7E3hGLEa4Q2-fiX3BYcLx70Me4hAWCyv7YzfkeWNcXA=s1555)

It was an exiting game because of the early German losses and the required bit of luck to pull the engineer attack off.

The houses are all papercraft. Mostly from Dave Graffam (http://www.davesgames.net/ (http://www.davesgames.net/)). Some are free downloads from ebob miniatures, but these are no longer available on their website.

The multiple skins option included with a number of houses  from Dave Graffam allows you to vary the look of your buildings, which I really like

It's not top notch like these: https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=133839.0 (https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=133839.0), but I have limited storage space available and in this way I can use the same houses for ACW, Old West, WW2 and even some modern games.

After a break of almost a year we went back to our Winter Storm campaign and kicked off Chapter Two with the German attack towards Gremjachi.

My Soviet AT gun failed to even damage the two German panzers and the Soviet junior leaders seemed to be bullet magnets.

The Germans press forward to the village of Verkhne‐Yablochny in a game with special victory conditions.

They didn't manage to eject the Soviets from the village but did largely achieve their objective.

Highlight of the game was the T34 crew who kept dominating the battlefield while being continuously hit by a German infantry gun.

But the crew of a tank that takes repeated hits from a gun, even while surviving them, will have hearing issues the rest of their lives.... ;)

Scenario 9 features only tanks which is rather special for an infantry game like CoC. Four german tanks engaged five Soviet tanks.

Only three tanks managed to survive the carnage: two panzer III's and a T70 that was driven off the table.
We weren't sure whether CoC would work for an all tank game (What a Tanker would have been another option for this scenario), but it played nice and fast.

The second wave of Soviet tanks tries to get through the German lines in scenario 10, which is again a no-infantry-all-tanks Chain of Command game.

Three burning tanks this time (sorry CapnJim). One Soviet tank got through but the Germans were again too strong for a decisive Soviet victory.

The one that got away:

Still the battle around Verkhniy‐Kumskiy is raging as the Soviets try to stop the Germans from pushing towards Stalingrad. This all tank battle we played using the What a Tanker rules.

The game took longer than a Chain of Command game with the same forces and (nearly) the same terrain.
I got the feeling that this game was more dynamic (more movement and maneuvering) than the Chain of Command all tank games.

The Soviets won by the way. The best performing team must've been the crew of a small Soviet tank that took out a Panzer III

Only 2 tanks totally destroyed this time. The other casualties were taken out by total permanent command dice loss.

Scenario 12 from the Winter Storm campaign where the Germans are attacked from the front and in the rear but prevail. My cunning plan for a Soviet victory fails to deliver because the required full Chain of Command dice is never reached.

The campaign has reached the village of Verkhniy-Kumskiy itself.

The Germans withstood the Soviet onslaught, but only just. The man of the match was Pauli der Panzerknacker who took out a T34 with a satchel charge.

Looks like Pauli will get a Tank Destruction Badge!  But Jeez, that took some big balls.  How does he walk?  :D

Indeed!
I had the same feeling when reading the section "infantry close-attacking armor (with improvised means)" (roughly translated from Dutch) in my Soldier's Handbook.
One must be pretty desperate to fight tanks this way.
Apparently tank hunter teams doing this were common though in WW2.

Have you seen this training film?

It's from the Germans in 1943.

Great llustration of the risks of armour advancing without infantry support.

The Germans need to execute a planned withdrawal by punching through the Soviet lines in this Winter Storm scenario.

This time, man of the match was eagle-eyed Ivan, who managed to chase a Panzer III off table with his LMG.

It wasn't enough though. In the end the Germans claimed victory.

Great to see you’re still going with this (winter storm is a long campaign). I believe Ivan may be appearing on a propaganda poster for the motherland very soon - introducing the new light Russian tank the Ivan mkI - never throws a track link and can be fuelled with vodka.

Any ideas what you’ll swap to for a breather?

Thank you for posting,

You're welcome!

Yes, it certainly was a memorable achievement by Ivan. They may have to do some 1940's photoshopping though since Ivan got shot by another panzer III at the end of the game.

After this chapter of Winter Storm I've got a What a Cowboy campaign planned. I still have some figures and terrain to paint though, so I'll probably game one or more WW2 Normandy CoC one-off scenarios with my regular opponent before the What a Cowboy campaign can start.

For chapter 3 of Winter storm I pretty sure I have all the figures painted and ready. For chapter 4 there are still some gaps to fill.
