Title: Suggestions for shields? (Kitbashing 28mm Cretan Archers)
Post by: Fremitus Borealis on June 23, 2021, 07:14:08 PM
So I'm currently painting up a unit of Cretans (the metal pack from Warlord), and feel inspired to kitbash some of my own, since these lads are all one-piece, so I couldn't really change much.

I have 8 plastic 28mm Victrix archer bodies that I plan to use as my "base", but I'm afraid I don't have any shields that are small enough.

Any suggestions on what to use for "Cretan" shields? I'm assuming 15mm hoplite shields might be about the right size, but I don't have any 15mm hoplites to check lol

How about the small bucklers from the Perry WotR boxes? Alternatively there is a smaller shield on the Victrix Roman command sprue that might do.

Hole punch some scraps of plastic card,
or even just card.  If you use card seal
the rims with thinned PVA to stop it coming
apart like an onion skin.

If you want crescent shields then use the
hole punch again to take a 'bite' out of the shield.

Sequins are another option, & can come in some
quite funky shapes.

What about these, the reverse has a kind of wood grain finish. If they're any good I've got 16 you can have.

:)

Mine are about 8mm in diameter, which corresponds to the Foundry cast on bucklers. I think the skeleton shields will work or 25mm or smaller 28mm peltast shields, or even hoplite shields in 15mm.

1st Corps has 10mm which may be bigger.

I have used shield designs that I have found on the internet, resized and sometimes reshaped them from round to oval, Printed them on card stock and glued them to figures.   I use a program named Paintshop Pro.  These are 6mm figures that were missing their shields

I have also done this for 28mm figures.

That would be brilliant, actually! Although I am in the US so I'm not sure if the shipping would be prohibitive...

Yep, I'm in Blighty, so postage could be a tad costly?
