Title: Yet another butterfly wandering through the ECW
Post by: valleyboy on June 27, 2021, 10:26:40 AM
I seem to have wandered into another period and you know who should take the blame for this!

Like many others seem to do, I thought I'd try and log my progress in attempting to raise armies for both sides in a single thread here though I have posted some pictures of earlier efforts in the past.. Perhaps I'll try and add them here in the next few days in the hope of keeping them together, getting help and suggestions and trying to keep my impetus going and not getting too distracted by other......... Oh look shiny...

I seem to have acquired figures from a few  ranges as I usually seem to when I tackle a project, usually because I'm drawn and mesmerised by unpainted lead!

Here are the most recent efforts
A range of figures showing my butterfly tendencies I suppose after a mass basing session
Some ECW Regiments of Foot

Very nice.  They all seem to fit together well.  Are you planning to give that cavalry unit a coat of matt varnish?

All of these units looks absolutely splendid!  A great basis for a set of ECW forces. I look forward to seeing the progress as the butterfly continues to flutter  ;) .  Do you have a plan around any particular campaign / battle, or is the aim just to get two forces big enough for a game?

Splendid start there Kerry. Interesting to see such an eclectic mix of figures in the same army. Bicorne are the winners for me, although I also rather like the First Corps figures. Will have to take a closer look at them. But the painting looks great across the board.

(I hope it’s not me you’re blaming for this latest diversion by the way? lol)

Thank you all for the encouragement

That's the problem Hu - it is matt varnish but it shines like a beacon
Its Windsor & Newton Acrylic Matt Varnish

Ordinarily I don't use varnish (because of 2 previous mishaps) but for some reason my usual undercoat on the First Corps cavalry and a range of other figures just seemed to peel too readily so I did
I'd like to tone the shine down a  little

Of course it is - you ought to be ashamed of yourself lol

Just looking to get 2 forces together (solo gamer effectively in NZ) no particular campaign or battle, just some units that look pretty and some variation in coat colours ::)

That surprises me. I use the W&N Professional matt varnish all the time and never get a shine like that. You might have a dodgy batch.

Post by: mellis1644 on June 29, 2021, 02:09:21 PM
Make sure the W&N is mixed well. I have had some 'poor' results when it has not been mixed up . If old bottles that can take some recombining, as it does eventually separate a bit - but it is still one of the better ones IMO.
Title: Re: Yet another butterfly wandering through the ECW
Post by: valleyboy on June 29, 2021, 08:19:22 PM
Thanks, I wonder if that was the problem but I'm not that fussed in using it again or  varnishing at all for that matter
Is it likely that if I reuse the Matt over the shiny it will dull it down?
I suppose it cant get any worse

Last year someone suggested I use Pebeo Acrylic Matt Varnish… it’s now my “best friend”. Give it a Ho yourself and see what you think?

Post by: bigredbat on June 30, 2021, 10:40:27 AM
Stirring the matt varnishes is really important- I use small ball bearings or, in the case of the thicker ones, I put a couple of heavy metal shields in the jar- they really get it moving!
Title: Re: Yet another butterfly wandering through the ECW
Post by: SJWi on June 30, 2021, 11:22:42 AM
Valley boy, I’d stick with Matt varnishing. I use the Warlord product which used to be fine but I’ve had a few recent “shiny” issues. A mate of mine now swears by the Winsor and Newton product. What I always ensure is that the varnish is warm and shaken well, and if possible the figures are left to dry in a warm, dry place. The top of my Aga is perfect….for metal or resin products!
Title: Re: Yet another butterfly wandering through the ECW
Post by: Captain Blood on June 30, 2021, 12:53:46 PM
Contrary to M'learned friend, Bigredbat, I never stir it lol

I use the old trick of storing it upside down so the thick matt stuff gathers in the lid, and that's what I use for varnishing.

I've been using W&N Galeria Matt for a number of years, and it's usually pretty reliable - although it does go off a bit after a few years. Sometimes it unaccountably dries slightly shiny, but an overcoat of the thick stuff from the lid usually cures it.
It is however, also susceptible to variations in temperature, humidity, moisture etc. And this can affect how it dries.
I've found the surest way with it is to paint the Galeria varnish on fairly generously, then stick your newly varnished figures / models straight into a warm airing cupboard to dry quickly.

Once it gets old, this varnish is also prone to the occasional outbreak of white spot, where a granule of pure matting medium dries as a tiny white fleck or pimple on your otherwise pristine paintwork. You then have to pick this off and touch up.
What I've never known it to do is dry seriously shiny, nor to produce the ruinous white bloom disaster, which we've probably all experienced with spirit-based varnishes.
It's also true, BTW, that the varnish will react slightly differently to different paints on which it is overlaid. I often see this with reds and blacks, which will dry to a slightly satin finish even when the rest of the figure appears dead flat matt.
This is why some people give their figures a gloss coat first, although I've personally never bothered. It's not so much about making the figure 'tougher' and more durable. It's about providing a consistent base for the matt varnish to key onto...

Anyway... Wargamers and varnishes... The topic that will keep on giving for eternity...  ;)

I’ve seen this Matt varnish issue raised many times on various sites, but haven’t  experienced it since I ditched enamels.  My current regime is  Daler Rowney soluble Matt varnish over a gloss acrylic varnish.  This gives very good results.  I’ve never had fogging or white specs using this combination.  If you want to airbrush varnish on, Tamiya Matt varnish thinned with Mr Color self levelling thinners is also very reliable.  Again, this is put on over a gloss varnish.  The enemy of Matt varnish is moisture so make sure the preceding coats have had 24 hours or more to gas off before varnishing over them.

Very nice figures, thank you for sharing.

As for the varnish issue - Army Painter user here. On the few occasions where I have had the dreaded white frosting it has been because I have been too heavy handed with the spraying.

So true!  I had been using Daley Rowney but was fed up with needing white spirit to clean brushes.  I bought a few acrylic matts to try and have been quite happy with this stuff from AK Interactive. Very matt and very easy to use.

I Matt varnish all my figures. My long-standing preferred varnish was by Warlord Games but recently I have suffered from some figures staying shiny. I have a mate who swears by the Winsor and Newton product despite its much higher price. My tips for varnishing are

Make sure the varnish is warm and well shaken
Try to ensure where you spray is warm and dry.
Don’t spray two thickly. Two light coats are better than a single thick coat.
If possible let let the figures dry in a warm/hot place. I use the warming plate of my AGA cooker much to my wife’s annoyance.
If I have spots of “shine” I touch up with Vallejo brush-on Matt varnish which seems to work really well.

As I've said on the blog,  https://valleyboyinnz.wordpress.com/2021/09/06/royalist-ecw-army-off-the-wokbench/ (https://valleyboyinnz.wordpress.com/2021/09/06/royalist-ecw-army-off-the-wokbench/) the only positive thing I say about level 4 and 3 lockdown here in NZ is that apart from keeping us safe from the Great Pestilence  it has meant more painting time
Lord Hopton's regiment of Foot is a result!

This is another unit from First Corps though looking at it now I wish I'd added a few more musketeers to the bases using 10-to 12 instead of just 8 per base

So the army is growing, that's 3 Regiments of Foot from Empress, 3 from First Corps with another part painted, 1 each from Bicorne Miniatures and Warlord Games
so I've just ordered some dragoons from Bicorne

Things are moving along splendidly with this project! (On the varnish issue I find drying figures sprayed with Humbrol acrylic matt varnish, over same gloss, in front of a hot air fan heater does the trick.)

Thanks Gents- I agree Paul I'd like to see more variation as  well

Based for "For King and Parliament" rules - base sizes are 85mm wide and 70mm deep though the command base is more shallow
I just wish I'd added a few more musketeers to the bases though

Thanks Gents for the encouragement

I think I will do Simon, I reduced the number because the regiments I painted by Empress ones seemed too cluttered  with 10 on a base but they also had musket rests. I also felt it was away of reducing cost but on on reflection that doesn't that sensible and I also made a mistake in calculating the numbers when I made the order

Just an update with Royalist Regiments painted to date, 1 more to go - all on the blog https://valleyboyinnz.wordpress.com/2022/03/23/english-civil-war-royalist-infantry/

Here they are
(https://i.postimg.cc/ncf0C9Zj/DSC04387.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/pykDSTmR)

The first 3 regiments are from Empress Miniatures
Allan Apsley's Regiment

(https://i.postimg.cc/ZKjYkSr3/DSC04458.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/kB6P8LYX)

Edward Stradling's Regiment
(https://i.postimg.cc/YC9rMs3P/DSC04459.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/dLbP9ngR)

Anthony Thellwell's Regiment
(https://i.postimg.cc/FKkhJkwg/DSC04460.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/LqScc59n)

The next is a generic regiment from First Corps Miniatures
(https://i.postimg.cc/JzvLm4ty/DSC04461.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/mPYqy4YR)

The Pike are held rather than grounded and I hope well be OK after being attached with epoxy
(https://i.postimg.cc/cCLYnWDz/DSC04462.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/WFxtBBcm)

Next is Colonel John Talbot's Regiment another from First Corps
(https://i.postimg.cc/VL5nsY0r/DSC04463.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/XpSpQ684)

Lord Hopton's Regiment
(https://i.postimg.cc/V6Y0x1cN/DSC04464.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/yJbNRMxq)

with the 3rd First Corps Regiment being The Duke of York's Regiment
(https://i.postimg.cc/HxSB9kJY/DSC04465.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/k6bQn9Fz)
(https://i.postimg.cc/rss0pJsX/DSC04466.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/GT0h7vvq)

Next another Generic regiment this time a plastic one from Warlord Games
Can't really say I enjoyed painting these and the lack of flags doesn't help
(https://i.postimg.cc/FH3f11rR/DSC04467.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/bZYYBy2c)

Moving on to the last 2 from Bicorne Miniatures
Charles Gerard's Regiment
(https://i.postimg.cc/HsfcpbCR/DSC04468.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/rKNFj0sN)

The pike are grounded and I wonder if might take rougher handling in the long term
(https://i.postimg.cc/DZj0RXgC/DSC04469.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/VrtzC52M)

Finally The Kings Lifeguard
(https://i.postimg.cc/4N4w6k7s/DSC04373.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/Z0grmQxM)
My Favourite pose is the Musketeer at order pose
(https://i.postimg.cc/SxfMDjwP/DSC04376-2.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/NKLF0GG8)
Flags are by Flags of War

(https://i.postimg.cc/wxRRnwCL/DSC04386.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/jCKj74dS)

I have a set of flags for John Lamplugh's regiment left and enough Bicorne figures undercoated t complete this and I think that will be enough Royalist foot for now though I have painted another Warlord Pikeblock and am trying to motivate myself to paint the associated musketeers

Just made a slight addition while taking part in the Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge
I haven't started the Parliamentarian foot but I did find another Royalist flag so even though these First Corps figures were intended for the other side they got switched to Col John Lamplugh's Regiment of Foote

(https://i.postimg.cc/cJPCg3hs/DSC04881_(2).jpg) (https://postimg.cc/FfgNw7wq)

Then for other entries I made a start on these Bloody Miniatures. I cannot believe how good they are, too good I think to just lose in my rank and file as extras. I have them all but the Scots and am definitely going to add those once the Royal Mail gets its act together. I'm not really a skirmish gamer but I think I'm going to have to do something in that line as these are incredibly lovely figures and take paint to well. Well done Richard

I'll look forward to seeing those in due course. You've got a great collection and elegant project here Kerry. Cheers!

Kerry I had not seen this tread before - missed it somehow.

They are wonderfully painted miniatures - love the new regiment and the way they have been based.  The Bllody Miniatures have also been given a great lick of paint.

Having said all of that I am excited by the Italian Wars - I'm going off to see if I can find a thread on that project.

Thanks all, am just staying with the outlaws at the moment on a trip back home to combine with Partizan. I was trying to be low key and not have too many parcels arrive there for collection and found my 2 dwarfed by the 5 parcels my wife had arranged to be sent there!

Not knowing exactly what I'm planning to buy i decided to see what the Warlord plastic cavalry sets were like. I have some from Empress, Bicorne and First Corps and bought a box of Warlord thinking that I'll need lots of cavalry - using these to make a good few units is probably a good way of bulking out the collection while keeping down the cost

I finished basing these the day before leaving NZ

While they're not particularly fantastic or inspiring figures they're decent enough I think - a consideration when you're  attempting to build both sides and its not the only project!

A great addition. As you you say, they are not special figures but perfectly serviceable.

More than decent Kerry - and a considerable improvement on my unpainted horse!

Thank you, I saw some particularly nice examples of Warlord Plastics painted by a chap in one of the games at Partizan so I will get more
He also pointed out a unit made up of some figures I'd never seen before which looked impressive

Those are some impressive cavalry figures.  I particularly liked the rider firing his pistol across his body (to his left).  An interesting contrast to the more typical 16th-17th century pistol-armed figure firing to the right.

A few new additions, not up to the standard set by Captain Blood himself though - not only does he paint superbly but his new foray into a Bloody Miniatures has is a boon for us all.

Those look fantastic. I quite like the russet hats- I never thought of using that colour for wide brimmed hats; I am going to pinch that. :D
