Title: Zombietown - Under Construction - NEW PICS & LOADS OF 'EM
Post by: uti long smile on September 12, 2009, 02:35:51 PM
I received some Old Glory buildings back from terrain-builder and painter extraordinaire Darren Couch of Black Knight Studios http://black-knight-studios.co.uk/ (http://black-knight-studios.co.uk/).

So I decided to have a set up of Zombietown to add to what I've already made - and see how it fitted with the Facility that I posted earlier -  http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=12215.0 (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=12215.0)

The whole table is approximately 3'x5'. It's been collected and built over many years and you've probably seen most of the buildings in other posts. A couple are things I've scratch built - e.g. the burger bar is based on Pappa Midnight's plans that he kindly provided. This is practically finished save for some minor internal finishing menu signs and one last Ainsty table to do (which I seem to be  putting off for some reason!).

Two of the buildings are stacked and glued Ainsty resin 'Front Street' ranges. Again I need to finish painting the grey/brown 4 storey one addings windows etc and the three story red brick one will have a bar on the ground floor which will need to be added, but that's currently being painted up.

There are a few of Plasticville buildings: Frosty's Bar is thankfully done; the gunshop need an interior; and the Supermarket hasn't even been started yet!

The other multi-story buildings are the Old Glory Chicago streets builds painted by Darren coz a) he's great and b) I just don't have time despite terrain being my favourite thing to do. The petrol station is also a Black Knight build based on some Worldworks plans.

All the photos have been uploaded to my Photobucket album here http://s274.photobucket.com/albums/jj278/pez47/Modern/Zombietown/?start=all (http://s274.photobucket.com/albums/jj278/pez47/Modern/Zombietown/?start=all), but the better ones are here:

The pics are not great - so apologies. The sun was too bright and with bigger set ups I can't get the angle or as close as I'd like. However, it did give me a better idea of what to switch around to make future games work a little better and highlighted how much I've still got to do!!  ;D

TO DO - I need to paint and weather the rest of the CNC road tiles. I'm glad I settled on these for the roads after year of trying different things - they're a little clunky and there's too many craters for my liking, but I like the depth they add.

Still to come is a Plasticville Bank and Hospital and the last two Old Glory buildings. The hospital will probably move up to back onto the Facility - and the other will fill the space behind Supermarket. I've a few other bits knocking around that I could add too - including an industrial section and docks, but I'd need more CNC roads and a lot more table space!

That said, I've been planning an overhead subway track and trains and a Mall (again both loosely based on Worldwork plans) with Darren for at least three years - but time and money mean they'll both be a way off...

Giraffey - No harm in keeping Akula on his toes  :D  Sorry no good shots of the Facility entrance here - it's still unpainted so I saved it's embarrassment and mainly kept it out of shot.

The idea was that the entrance to the lab was via the Ainsty loading dock - you can see it in the top left of this pic, by the ambulance and the couple of garishly painted guards. There was a chain link fence around the loading bay, but it kept blowing away in the wind!

While you can't see it the Facility has interior double and single doors to match the exterior Ainsty dock. My only regret is that Ainsty's Cold Store walls are about 3cm too high to match with the interior walls. So I'll probably scratch build a flat wall to fit it more seamlessly once the Hospital comes back from Darren and I've figured out all the building positions a bit more.

I plan to use the Hospital as a 'research facility' - a front for the Umbrella style zombie lab below. The second level of the Facility is below ground, sitting on the table top. Everything else sits on 5mm MDF boxes that I generally use to get multiple levels on my boards. I've a vault planned using the Copplestone Bank Set, which will also be below ground, but this is way off.

Miner - It's been a slow burn over 5-10 years, as inevitably motivation has waned and other projects have sprung up!

Flip - The cars are 1:43, if my memory serves. Easy to pic up cheaply on ebay - although the ambulance came from the States.

I am really jealous!  Looks great Uti, you must be really pleased with how it is all coming together.

 :D

My own zombietown has taken a back seat over the last couple of months, but I promise to get back on with it, once the carreir is done.

BTW - Uti - have just psoted some photos, as requested... ;)

Excellent!

I'm taking notes from your experiences - I notice, for example, that the streets are wide enough for two way traffic, but no more. I've been wrestling with this one - two lanes, parking, etc.? - but I think your solution is the best, in large part because it means more room for buildings and less wide open spaces!

I'll be coming back to this again and again for inspiration - so I'm looking forward to more!

Top stuff!

Ta Hawkeye :)

I've struggled with: what I like, what looks realistic and what's practical - and to be honest it's a liberal mix of all three in the end. I tried to have a generic city table that I could use for most genres that I play, that means it's a bastard of styles too. I think it's somewhere in the US for Pulp, superheroes and zombie games - but hopefully I can get away with using some of it for Doctor Who Miniature Games too.

Yeah Skank is a true inspiration.

I love the interior detailing and their weathering is suburb.

I'd like to do something like their shanty town (Nick Riskin has done something similar too) using the Plasticville trailer park.

The sidewalk and curbs are all from CNC Workshop

http://www.miniaturescenery.com/

I was lucky enough to pick then up for a steal on Ebay. I've gritted the roads and then weathered them up a lot.

Most of the zombies are from Griffin with some Copplestone and Hasslefree's in there too.

No there are a fair few bits of mine on the table, I just need to top up with a couple more buildings for the game in a couple of weeks which I didn't have time to do. If I get any time at the weekend, I'll snap some of the finished Burger Bar too.

Righto - back from SELWG (not bad BTW) - the Zombietown game.

We used the Songs of Blades engine with the new Fear and Faith rules. I've played SoBaH before and personally like the system. Overall they played fairly well, with a couple of points requiring clarification but nothing we couldn't sort.

I adapted the basic Zombie scenario supplied in F&F, upping the points numbers: 10 Survivors and 32 Zombies, plus two Heresy Lurkers (mutant wall-crawlers) and a Nemesis (cybernetic Zombie experiment - Hasslefree's Jotun). I also added in 30 or so event cards - randomly found equipment or events. Each player picks a card each turn or the Survivors can search for extras using their Actions.

The Record Sheets and Cards
(http://i274.photobucket.com/albums/jj278/pez47/Modern/Zombietown/TheCards2.jpg?t=1255862459)

I had no idea how balanced either the points or cards would be. The cards worked great, adding mini-objectives and random events throughout the game. On reflection, I think I added too many zombies. I wanted to evoke a real desperate sense for the players, but the odds may have been stacked too high - although they did get some very unlucky rolls a few times.

I'll post the scenario outline, rules, cards and character record sheet on the Songs of Blades Yahoo group later this week if anyone wants them (or can send via a PM if you don't want to join the Group):

http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/songofblades/files/FEAR%20AND%20FAITH/ (http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/songofblades/files/FEAR%20AND%20FAITH/)

I ran all the Zombies and m'colleagues Hayden and Morgan ran the 10 survivors between them.

The ten survivors started in the Burger Bar and have to make it to the Facility Entrance on the opposite side of the 4x4 board. They believe the Facility is a safe haven from the zombie horde.

The Board
(http://i274.photobucket.com/albums/jj278/pez47/Modern/Zombietown/Theboard.jpg?t=1255881320)

The 'Burgerama' was based on Pappa Midnight's plan - Thanks again!

The survivors are: Cobra (the merc), Walter (gun-shop owner), Lacey (the cop); Romero (veteran), Ashlee (chainsaw girl), Bubba (the king!), Kev and Sally (brave survivors), Mr Brewster (the suit); Alice (the kid).

Bubba, Walter, Romero (Cobra and Ashlee)

Kev and Sally (sorry guys!)

They started well, deciding to move bravely down main street in a pack, using Walter's Leader skill. They got very lucky with the event cards, drawing loads on equipment - the gas canister (grenade), molotov cocktail, passcard (providing a second and secret lift entrance to the Facility) amongst others.

Mr Brewster headed for the nearby Bank - the source of his mini objective, while the others drew more lucky cards allowing them to build a barricade - but also cards to activate both Lurkers.

Wall-Crawling
(http://i274.photobucket.com/albums/jj278/pez47/Modern/Zombietown/Lurker.jpg?t=1255880652)

The Zeds advance and Lurkers sped toward them at speed - putting the willies up them and causing Ashlee to waste her Grenade (something they sorely regretted later). The gunshots, explosions and more cards activated the last of the Zombies and the Nemesis and things began to get a bit desperate. More risks where taken with Activations which ended the Survivors turn several times with unlucky rolls.

Close quarters
(http://i274.photobucket.com/albums/jj278/pez47/Modern/Zombietown/H2H.jpg?t=1255880903)

Lacey bravely dispatched a Lurker and the other soon followed A few unlucky card draws saw the Survivors herded into the back alleys as they made a desperate break for the gas canister (another grenade) and the Facility secret entrance. Ashlee finally got the gas canister, but not before Lacey fell to a gnawing Zombie. A brave, but botched throw of the gas canister still wiped over eight Zeds.

However, the lumbering Nemesis was now in range and opened up with his Assault Rifle, strafing the Survivors and felling Alice. Panic began to set in as the deaths caused few Fear tests that slowed them down.

The Nemesis unloads

Leader Walter was killed and the players lost the bonuses he gave, and shortly after Ashlee with reduced to a red mist by a Gruesome Death from the Nemesis' Assault Cannon.

As the game drew to a close, one Survivor after the other fell. Romero jumped over the wall to the safety of Facility Entrance, leaving Cobra and Kev to fight it out in the alley as Sally and Mr Brewster panicked and fled the board. Sally escaped, but Mr Brewster slowed by the treasures he had recovered from the Bank, was brought down by a pack of Zeds.

Last Stand
(http://i274.photobucket.com/albums/jj278/pez47/Modern/Zombietown/LastStand.jpg?t=1255881184)

Mr Brewster falls

The End
(http://i274.photobucket.com/albums/jj278/pez47/Modern/Zombietown/TheEnd.jpg?t=1255881288)

Overall it was great fun, although with only Romero making it to safety, I think the balance was out. Also only a small part of board was actually used - inevitably really. I think another small squad of soldiers from the other board edge might have helped - but may have slowed things?

Below are a few pics taken this morning of lone suvivor Romero in the just finished Houlihan's bar:

Absolutely amazing. Amazing. There's no other word for it!

There's so much that's good about this that it's difficult to know where to start. First and foremost is that the scenery and the models look beautiful, of course, but the board in particular looks incredibly unified. The various pieces of terrain, when they're put together, don't look like pieces of terrain - they look like part of a city. The photos of the game in progress really bring this out. Brilliant.

The game itself sounds great too. When it comes to the balance thing - that's a tough one to call. It's a zombie apocalypse, after all. Anything too easy wouldn't feel right. I think the key is probably only to make small changes and see how the game plays next time, and the time after that. From the report, it seemed like the survivors were close to getting more than one model to safety, and it was only at the end when things went wrong - which seems only fitting!

Brilliant, inspirational stuff. I'll be turning to this thread again and again for my own zombie project.

WOW! Excellent report, pictures and setup - top notch! :-*

Lots of irony in that one. Alice got gunned down by the nemesis, Romero made it scotch-free, and Kev, oh lordy, after all his preparation and zombie-proofing still fell to the hordes.

Lovely report and great figures and terrain! As for the game, maybe the Nemesis was a bit overkill, it killed quite a few survivors at least. But otherwise it seems like a perfect zombie game 8)

Is that a zed climbing out of a sewer? (second from the right) Where did he come from?

And where did the Nemesis come from? - Never mind... a quick reread provided the information. As someone in the forum once said, "Do read the posts, 007."

Really fantastic table there Uti! :-*  You are inspiring me to have the best zombie table I can do too!

I have a couple of questions... in the fourth photograph up from the bottom of your game report post, who makes the zombie figure (the top one of the three zombies that has Corbra in the corner, and is just above the
Hasslefree professor zombie)?  Also who makes the nice tall brick walls also seen in the photograph and in some other pictures?  Are they scratchbuilt or resin?

I love all the detail work you have put into everything... I see new things each time I look at the photographs! :D

Cheers Darkoath!!

That zombie - actually isn't a zombie at all - but an old Ral Partha or RAFM modern Vampire (possibly Shadowrun?) He's years old!

The tall brick walls are resin pieces from Ainsty - now owned by Old Crow:

http://www.oldcrowmodels.co.uk/aiproducts.htm (http://www.oldcrowmodels.co.uk/aiproducts.htm)

The tall ones around the hospital are from their Cold Store range and the shorter-ones from Car Park. The long wall with the green double doors that backs onto the Facility scratch built - just foamboard and plasticard chosen to match the other walls. The window wall sitting ontop is from Pardulon.

A couple of people have asked where the buildings come from so I've marked up this picture - the writing's a bit small but hopefully you can read everything.

Excellent! It's great to know where the various buildings come from. Some I recognize (the plasticville buildings, mostly, and they look fantastic), some were familiar (Ainsty - looking really nice built up here), and some I had no idea about at all (the Old Glory buildings look excellent, and offer the height that the plasticville buildings lack).

Thanks for this!

I got them via Blue Moon, but they were'nt on their pages when I last looked.

They've a limited range over at Old Glory Minitures (US) here:

It a perfect scene of creeping into a burger joint and seeing the undead proprietor moaning at you from behind the counter.

If your fast enough you can put a cap in his nugget before he gets too close. But would the shot alert other zeds to your location?

I'll have to look into the Old Glory buildings, in that case, and hope that they're still available. Looked through the Ainsty site last night, but managed to keep my wallet in my pocket - although only just!

Just looking at it again, the bright yellow interior of the burger bar is terrific! What a great piece of terrain! And the interior furniture is Ainsty as well, isn't it?

Are you still working on more, by the way, or is the board more or less done at this point?

Hawkeye - I can't claim complete credit for the Burger Bar. While it was scratchbuilt, the plans where LAF's own Pappa Midnight's. It's a lovely piece of work. He created the graphics for the walls and floor as you'll see from the link below and kindly emailed them too me. I've access to decent printer, so I  got some quality prints.

http://www.displacedminiatures.com/Pappa%20Midnight/gallery/1412/ (http://www.displacedminiatures.com/Pappa%20Midnight/gallery/1412/)

The build itself was pretty straightforward - foamcard shell, plasticard coating. The two internal and one external door are from Copplestone and are highly recommended. I only needed to trim off the tab on the bottom. The window frames are simply card and poster and signs just googled or DTPed (I'm a graphic designer).

The shop-front, tables, counter, shelves and arcade machines are all Ainsty. I've bought stuff from them for a looong while, when Mike (god bless him) owned and made everything. They're very reasonable and about the best modern range around. I've lots of the Front Street range and have glued some of these together to make a couple of multi-story buildings - Houlihan's bar pictured and a four-story Hotel, which I'm not really happy with and still needs some more work IMHO.

FF - It does! Honestly!! It's a Vanguard 1/43 scale if I remember rightly which I picked up on ebay.

Thanks for the info and detail on the burger bar - I hadn't realised that there are some Copplestone doors in there - I'll check those out as well. The Ainsty items, after your recommendation and after seeing how good they look in your builds - are on my list as well. Thanks again!

Oh, so PM gave them to you? Not to sound greedy or anything, but would you, Midnight, be willing to release some of those graphics to the general LAfers? We could start a fast food chain with those resources. Though I'd be mostly interested in the main sign and the wall-mounted menu and little else.

Oh and Uti. "Pics or it didn't happen." ;)
