Title: A Right Proper British Horror! (Project logo added)
Post by: Bravo Six on July 02, 2021, 05:40:40 AM
Over the past few months I’ve been working on a new project I’ve dubbed “British Horror” using Tin Shed’s excellent sculpts from 1st Corps Follies and Homefront ranges, and filling in gaps with stuff from Sally 4th’s Movie range. I wasn’t really interested in doing a VBCW project with his figures, but I wanted to do SOMETHING, so I decided to do a horror/pulp/adventure theme set in Britain just before the war breaks out. There’s even some Cthulhu elements mixed in with the horror for good measure.  I’m having a blast painting the stuff and collecting terrain elements to use through the course of the project for various locales. So far I have plans to set stuff in a fictitious British village and surrounding forest area as well as some excursions outside of the country to the Back of Beyond and Egypt during the time period. Most of the focus will remain in country though. Tin Shed’s excellent “refugees” fleeing war will sub nicely for village inhabitants fleeing “the local problem”.

So far, I’ve been lucky to find some great figures that size up well and work with Tin Shed’s stuff and embody the same sort of look/character, like the Ghouls from Crocodile Games (which will be Moor Beasts); Deep Ones from Crucible Crush;  Old metal Ghouls from Citadel, as well as some 80’s sculpts from Citadels Night Horrors and Gothic Horror range; Timber Wolves from Old Glory, and Kev Adams “Evil Cultists” sculpts from Dragon Bait/Dark Fable. All of these have that sort of cartoony feel I’ve come to love in many figure ranges.

I’m hoping keep building on this thread as I get stuff accomplished, and as the writing of the backstory and ideas develop. I’ll be using the homebrew skirmish rules I’ve developed and probably using Fistful Of Lead from time to time. I’ve titled the supplement for my own rules after Ray Bradbury’s “Something Wicked This Way Comes” (but not after the terrible movie of the same name).

So without further adieu, the first 4 adventurers painted (Montague Dean, George Cromwell, Penny Renfield and "Red Head" Danny Glasgow), posed in front of some crate piles. I tried a new paint recipe for older wood and am quite pleased with it. Crate piles are from Scotia-Grendal and are classics.

Nice one! Those guys are looking good. Fictional British villages are great. I should know, because I live in one. Personally I'd like to see an Egyptian mummy running rampant across the cricket pitch in the middle of a game, but whatever horrors you have in mind will be cool.

I'm not familiar with the Bradbury book or of the film you mention. I'm so old school that when I see that phrase, I'm thinking of the original quote from Macbeth. Though I wasn't actually around when that was written.

Looking forward to whatever you have in store for us next, Todd.

  lol

The original idea was to name the main village Chamberwick Green as a nod to the kids show Camberwick Green. I may still do that. The dark forest area was going to be named Grendalsham Forest as a nod to Rendelsham, but then I decided to name it Faversham Forest after our very own Harry. I let him know and he responded "Fame at last"  lol

Hey, you never know. Despite the ominous subject matter, some humor is a must!

I guess that a prequel could be Agatha Christie’s “By the Pricking of my Thumbs”.

Sounds like a neat idea.  Somehow fictional American cities don’t have the same ring to them.

I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with too.
Seeing what your doing reminded me of this . Totally forgot I made it when were talking.
Which is odd since it's one of the monster's I use form Ealing themed games.
It's at Bifrost miniatures. It comes with a human and giant rat in cocoons , and eggs. Plus a set of giant rat's or least it did when I had to replace mine from the website( third one .lost one ,and gifted the second.without knowing I'd lost the first . lol)
I think it was £18 for the set which is quite a chunk of metal.
To the point this one's got four coats of varnish and still needs a matt coat adding. As it kept chipping the undercoat every time I knocked it over whilst painting.

( I thought you might find it useful for scale if I used a figure you own.)

You know..... I was revisiting your Workbench thread the other day and saw those and almost asked what happened to them. They're PERFECT! And now I know where to get them.

Just the kind of game that I like!!  :o :-* :o  I will definitely follow your progress. You should be very happy with your painting on Mark's First Corps Follies minis. They are excellent and the painting brings out the personality of the sculpts. I have painted up the lady myself but your painting is better. The only thing that puzzles me is that yours is a blonde. Perhaps she is Japanese, as they are more likely to dye their hair blonde  lol
Here is my lady.

Thanks so much Lon! I think your painting is something to be proud of too my good man!

As for the lady, she totally struck me as a white chick, so I painted her as such. Not sure if Mark had intended her to be, or she was supposed to be part of the Chinese horde from the Follies range, but hey.... she'll do. You'll also notice I went with a solid green on the Scotsman's kilt. In my defence, I really tried tartan and failed miserably. So I'll add tartan to cammo as things I just can't paint.

Love the bamboo by the way, and the stacks-of-sacks! Are those from Crocodile Games? ???

Agreed AKULA. Actually, they don't look like typical, generic civilians. Each one of them has LOADS of character and some may even make it into some of my games as actual character instead of background fodder.

Next up is the village vet, with his trusty sidekick, Ned the Goat. Ned has a robotic hind leg strapped to him. Perfect for thrusting into a damaging head butt, or a nasty back kick.

Hey Todd-

These are really cool. Nice painting. I’ve been toying with the idea of a fictional English village as a board. I didn’t really have any game ideas I just liked the idea of a modelling a small village after watching tons of Jason Jensen’s train videos. I’d love to play a game. I haven’t read that book in years.

Thanks Eliot! I think this would be a great setting for FFOL Tales of Horror. We'll have to try it out.

As for the village terrain, I'm not planning on building a village per se (like Tin Shed's excellent board) and since my preferred playing area is a Kill Team sized mat, there won't be more than one or two buildings on it at any given time. Here are some of the 3D printed terrain elements I've acquired for the village so far.

The village pub, The Black Lobster:

A ruined farmhouse, which will serve as an encampment for some villagers fleeing "the local problem":

The local church (name to be determined):

Plus many of these ruined wall bits dotting the area, perfect for cover:

I also have a ton of forest terrain, originally done for my Mountain Man project, which will serve well for Faversham Forest, as well as a custom made river piece made to fit the 20 x33 Kill Team sized mat from Pworks:

A few more things to add to this thread. I'm having a game of FFOL Tales of Horror this weekend with LAF'er Eliot, so nothing like a deadline to push you to get some stuff done.  lol

First up, pesky cultist from the Sacred Order of Baphomet. Kev Adams sculpts for Dragon Bait Miniatures. They were a bit small compared to the already small Tin Shed Follies minis, and they were slotta which I don't use, so raised the bases a little with Miliput and I'm happier how they turned out size wise.

Next up, a two-headed Hellhound also by Kev Adams hand, also from Dragon Bait Miniatures. This will be used if we try the summoning rules in FFOL.

And finally, what forest lurking cult would be complete without a stone summoning circle with tons of burnt down red candles!  lol This is a resin poured piece from Grabblecast in Poland (bought off Etsy). His stuff is amazing and similar to Tabletop Furniture's stuff.

Have a few more additions to the project for next time's game. This time, our adventurers travel to a fictional mountainous area in China looking for the fabled statue of Xhang Wui said to imbue experienced magic users with extraordinary powers.

First up, Addison Wexley the Back of Beyond Guide in British Service along with his trust pack yak "Betsy"

Next up is another ex-soldier familiar with the area and in British Service, Sgt Harinder Bains.

You'll have to have a word with Simon and Mick. As there's some set's that don't seem to be in the Follies. That are cast and might prove useful.
There's a police motorcycle combo ( Ewan has one painted up for his VBCW.) A civilian couple motorcycle combo that should fit nicley with the refugees, and a motorcyclists wearing a trench coat anf Fedora.

Post by: Bravo Six on November 07, 2021, 02:13:27 AM
Been a while since I've posted anything completed for this project so a bit of an update....

One of the locales for the British Horror project is "Amazonia" an amalgum of Aztec/Mayan/Polynesian cultures. Basically, some follies style headhunters. Since I've already got a ton of jungle terrain for my Vietnam project, this was a no-brainer. I decided to go with the excellent Foundry aztecs sculpted by the chap who ran Obelisk Miniatures. These are smaller than typical Foundry fare, but scale up PERFECT with the Follies range size. I've so far completed painting and basing an Amazonian hut (3D printed and awaiting a few more adornments) as well as a village idol complete with a mais offering. My girlfriend looked at it and said "Nothing like an offering of mais to the gods to bring tasty white explorers to your shore"!!!  lol lol

I'll be moving in with my gal mid-to-late winter and it doesn't look like there will be many options for spraypainting/undercoating in the new digs, so I've been buying up tons of elements for my many periods of interest and have been mass production line priming in my place over the past 3 months. Looking forward to getting some brush time in over the holidays.

This is a very neat idea, I like the thought of English Horror, although you seem to have turned it into a world wide epic which presumably is going to expand the horror element.

Do you see it as being a connected storyline or a series of games held together by the genre only?

Either way I'm looking forward to seeing how it progresses.
Cheers

Oh and thanks for all the info on where the figures are to be found. That's  very helpful.

Pistolpete, probably not. This is a homebrew set not really intended for public consumption. But never say never.

Thanks for the compliments Vagabond. Yes, it'll follow the same protagonists, as they investigate horror themed mysteries and seeking ancient artifacts, both on the homefront, and abroad. I've pretty much relegated those locations to Back of Beyond, Egypt and Amazonia. Our heroes will be receiving their orders from the Ministry of Paranormal Studies (or MOPS), inspired by Mason's M.O.O.S.E.  lol

When I read your first post I was reminded of Mason's M.O.O.S.E. the man owes me weeks of my life reading through all his posts on the subject and if you get anywhere to those heady heights it will be well worth your effort.

I look forward to seeing how this progresses.
Cheers

There's been a few changes to this project as of late, but painting and terrain is coming along very slowly. I did however get my friend Jeff to do me a project logo for the "Gripping Tales" supplement, as well as being able to print it off on card stock for the table, should I decide to put on games at the local club. The name of the project is now called "A Right Proper British Horror":
