Finished assembling my Anglo-Saxon army (excluding command). 222 28mm miniatures individually based on magnetized 20mm bases so I can re-arrange them for any rules set. Currently shown in a 3 division setup for Hail Caesar. Comprised of Plastics from Vixtric, Wargames Factory, and Gripping Beast, as well as metals from Footsore and NorthStar. Bases from War Bases. Now to start the painting.

Very impressive. :-* :-* Good luck with the painting. Hopefully you'll show us as it progresses.
-
I'll keep an eye on this, I picked up some victrix vikings and Anglo saxons a couple of weeks back.
I'm dithering over the rules but I don't fancy individual basing.
Are you using transfers for the shields or freehand?
-
Thanks all, I'll be sure to share my progress on here as I go. I will be using Little Big Man shield transfers until I run out, then will free hand the rest.

Finally finished the first of the units. Loads of pictures and source for all components on my blog: https://wyndehurstproductions.blogspot.com/2021/09/anglo-saxons.html (https://wyndehurstproductions.blogspot.com/2021/09/anglo-saxons.html)

The Victrix minis are beautiful. I do wish though that they had included more unarmoured bodies or released a separate set as my impression is that the bulk of an army of the era would be without mail.
-
That lot will keep you busy for a week or two!
cheers

I think about half the pack is armored. It would have been nice to have a whole pack of unarmored but here is something to consider. The Anglo-Saxons after standford Bridge had disbanded down to just houscarels when they received word of the Norman invasion. That meant the bulk of the army at hastings was probably armored.

Decided to take a brake from my Anglo-Saxon army and work on some of the Normans. Finished 16 armored Norman Knights on horseback. 12 are from Conquest Games and 4 are from Footsore Miniatures. I am really happy with how they turned out. I need to touch up the 16 I already have and that will give me a full Division (for Hail Creaser) of mounted armored knights.

Another unit of Ceorls finished. I imagined this unit was raised from a village on lands belonging to the church so a pair of priests are leading them. Mostly Victrix with two Wargames Factory Saxons and two Crusader Miniatures Romano British minis to fill out the unit. Last of my unarmored Victrix used. Banner and shield decals from Little Big Men Studios. Outstanding job! :o

So I finished a unit that I did up as javelin armed skirmishers for my Anglo-Saxon army. They are some of the worst plastic minis I have ever used but I think they will get the job done. Originally I had planned on keeping all the skirmishers loose and not on a tray. After seeing a friends army with skirmisher trays I decided it would both speed up game play and better protect the minis since each one wont need to be handles. I got the trays from Litko along with magnet inserts. I went ahead and did up all 5 skirmish trays I'll need for the army. More on the blog: https://wyndehurstproductions.blogspot.com/2021/11/anglo-saxon-skirmishers.html (https://wyndehurstproductions.blogspot.com/2021/11/anglo-saxon-skirmishers.html)

My Anglo-Saxon army was originally intended for the skirmish game SAGA. Since I decided to expand it for large force rules like Hail Creaser I needed to re-base the existing models. I just finished rebasing all the unarmored models I had and added banners to each unit. They are a mix of metal minis from Footsore Miniatures and Crusader Miniatures and some plastics from Wargames Factory. Fantastic, that is quite the shieldwall there. My Normans and Vikings are also individually based for Saga, and then multi based for Hail Caesar, like yours. Makes for a more flexible gaming solution.
-
Yes that is my exact thought process for how I'm basing thrm.
-
Working again on my Anglo-Saxon army here are 2 units of skirmishers. They are armed with Javelins. Bows were in small numbers on the Saxon side so most skirmishers would have been armed with slings or javelins. Based off what I had available I'll be doing 3 units of javelins and 2 of bows. The movement tray is from Litko and the models are from Wargames Factory. They are the worst plastic models on the planet but I did my best to get the most out of them. As such I couldn't be bothered to give them more then a basic paint job and wash. Fortunately the Little Big Men transfers just fit and help them look a bit better.

You've done a great job with those Wargames Factory minis!
I find that the necks don't even fit. Having a whole mess of them, I eventually decided to just convert them into zombies for fantasy games in the future. The bad poses won't matter so much then.

Thank you. I have a huge number left over. They were given to be by a friend who had been given them by someone else lol. I chop all the necks down so that they are usable. I might have to do the zombie idea with the leftovers.
-
More progress on my Anglo-Saxons. These were my original Huscarls for SAGA that I just finished re-basing to fit in unit trays for larger games. I had to finish painting 3 of them and add 4 more to bring them up to strength, but really happy with end result. All that's missing is their flags. Now I know the keen eyed historians among you will notice they don't look quite like Anglo-Saxons. That is because they are sold as late Romano-British and I repurposed them.

Definitely agree about the Wargames Factory figure being pretty bad (in my experience, soft details, awkward poses, too many parts…). Like James said, though, you made yours look quite good, which is a feat!
-
Those Wargames Factory figures were the first plastic vikings.... I remember the day very clearly, the excitement I felt that FINALLY we'd be getting some plastic historicals!
Nowadays the Gripping Beast and Victrix vikings are just amazing comparatively.
I really appreciate the army you've put together, kudos!
thanks

Fantastic thread and fantastic army!
I admire you for your dedication to painting all those miniatures! I always lose the fun even after a batch of 5 minis ....
I especially like the comparison shot between last year and this year.
How do you paint so many miniatures? Do you basecoat them and then use a wash? And did you change anythingin your painting style since last year? :)
-
Thanks! My painting has changed little since last year. Generally I'll paint 1 unit at a time. Base coat them all and then batch paint 1 section at a time: Skin, Shirt, Metal, Pants, etcetera. What has changed with the last few units are small details. Like the last 2 units I painted all of their hair the same color instead of adding verity. I also take project brakes. Paint 1 or 2 units for this army and then paint a few skirmish models for something else or some terrain. Also will take longer paint brakes for some videogame time.

On Dec 31st 2022 I completed the last models for my Anglo-Saxon army. Since I have 2 units with Dane Axes I am calling the army and Anglo-Saxon/Danish army as it could be fielded as either.
Composition:
32 Armored Infantry with Dane Axes
64 Armored Infantry with Spears.
96 Unarmored Infantry with Spears.
12 Command models = 4 command bases.
18 Skirmishers with Javelins.
12 Skirmisher with Bows.
In the intended configuration as an Anglo-Danish army for Hastings for games like Hail Creaser it will consist of 3 divisions of 4 units, each unit consisting of 16 models. Based off of my research a good chunk of the army was armored Huscarls and Thegens from Herald and his Lords personal retainers. The rest of the army was local Fyrds gathered on the march. I also painted up an Queen Æthelfled model so I could use them as a Mercian army from earlier.
Some people have asked me what what a completed army means, saying collections are never really done. While I might end up adding to it down the road I would call this 'Project' complete. 2 years ago I designed the army using Hail Creaser rules for battle of Hastings at a size I felt was playable on most tables. I then assembled that army and have finished painting every model for it as intended. So the project is completed even if the collection my continue to grow.
One thing I might added are new movement bases that are 40mm square with a steel sheet on top. Each model is individually based on 20mm bases with a magnet in the middle. I would then put them on the 40mm squares if I wanted a slightly different configuration. If I reduced each unit by 4 then I could build a 4th division with the extra minis to make the overall unit/division count higher.

Now that the Anglo-Saxon ay is done its time to finish the Norman army. It's already got a lot of work done on the Cavalry and some Infantry, though I'll need to rebase most of the infantry. This is everything I have at my disposal. 1 Victrix Norman Infantry pack (60), 1 Victrix Medieval archers & slingers pack (36), 2 boxes Gripping Beast Dark Age Cavalry (24), and a mix of metals bought from other gamers failed projects. I'm confident I have enough minis (might get some more crossbows) but now I need to plan out the army to match my Anglo-Saxons for Hastings.
My original plan (organized for Hail Creaser) called for 2 Divisions of cavalry, each with 2 units of knights and 2 units of Retainers. A 3rd Division of Infantry consisting of 2 units Heavy Infantry, 2 units of Medium Infantry, 1 unit of Crossbows, and 2 units of Bows. But after further research I think the ratio of Cavalry to infantry is off and I need fewer of the former.
Instead I will go with the following using Hail Creaser army list:
Left Wing (first Division) Bretons
- Medium Infantry with Spears
- Medium Infantry with Spears
- Medium Infantry with Bows
- Breton Cavalry with Javelins
- Breton Cavalry with Javelins
Center (second Division) Normans
- Dismounted Knights with Swords/Spears
- Heavy Infantry with Spears
- Medium Infantry with Bows
- Norman Cavalry with Lances
- Norman Cavalry with Lances
Right Wing (third Division) Flemish and French
- Heavy Infantry with Spears
- Heavy Infantry with Spears
- Medium Infantry with Crossbows
- Mounted Knights with Spears
- Light Cavalry with Javelins
Here is what I have so far:

Been busy over the last 2 months and have finished 12 Anglo-Saxon Slingers and 10 Norman Knights, as well as Bishop Odo to lead one Norman division.
Slingers are all from Victrix. Each unit is painted almost the same because I was testing painting one almost entirely with speed paints and the other with just acrylic and washes.

Good job.
How many mini in total will there be.
-
As currently designed the Normans will have 264 minis and the Saxons will be 306 for a total of 570. Now thats with infantry units as 8x2, cavalry and ranged as 6x2, and skirmishers as 3x2 but I am thinking of making infantry units 6x2 instead.

These casualty markers look really nice! Where did you get the model for the tumbling rider in the top left? That looks really dynamic, dramatic and therefore fitting for such a marker :D
-
So I had to move house recently and just got my office set up. I decided to take a brake from painting minis and work on some terrain and will be doing a Fortified Norman Manor House and Motte and Bailey castle for use in the Norman conquest of England games. All the kits for this are from Sarris Precision.
I started with the Manor House and, after assembling, decided to do a stucco/rendered wall effect. I got a tube of filler (dont recommend using tubes, get tubs) and testing it on a scrap of MDF.
I then applied it all over the building.

I was really unhappy with how the first layer looked and the eye sore of a seam between floor levels. So I opted for a 2nd layer and used a better tool to apply it.

This looked better so I decided to use a watered down brown wash over the stucco, paint the windows and door frames, a brown was on the doors, and then some weathering.

Satisfied, I went and used a speed paint to paint the roof a slate color over a light grey base coat. This really pulled the thing together and I was loving the look.

Last thing was to paint the stairs. This I did by using several layers/different colors of dry brushed grays for an aged wood look.

And that's a playable Norman Manor House. I plan to flock the stairs base and I want to add a climbing vine or two up some walls.

Finished my fully modular Norman timber castle. I chose this from Sarrisa Precision Limited to use in my Norman Conquest games because King Willam routinely and quickly built castles as he moved about subduing revolts. These would most likely been of timber and in the Motte and Bailey style. Due to the module nature of these kits I can also use them to make fortified Norman Manors and different styles of timber castles.

Someone got a advance prototype infantry helm there.
I often joke with my friends that any miniature, or paint job, is only good for one day of history.
A good unit. TY

Great looking army on an epic scale. Nice work!

Thank you. Goal is to have it all finished before the end of the year. I am about 60% done with the last two units of armored Norman infantry. That will leave me 2 units of unarmored infantry, 5 command figures, and 12 casualty markers for the Normans and 1 unit of armored infantry, 1 unit unarmored infantry, and 5 casualty markers for the Saxons. Right now I can get about 2 units done a weak.

great stuff.

Last two units for Norman army done. Will get a full army photo up soon. I am waiting for a few banners and need to base up the movement trays but they are otherwise ready for Hastings.

Finally finished painting all the Normans. I still have a few pennants I'd like to add and add some basing to the movement trays but its otherwise done. Now just 2 units left for the Anglo-Saxons and I'll be ready for Hastings.

Wow, great work! That’s quite the achievement putting together both armies for that battle!

Impressive! :-*

They look splendid! Congrats!

Very impressive stuff :-*

Very well done. Superb effort to paint up both armies and to such a high standard. Just out of interest, what is the overall figure count?
