Bit of an odd one this but wondered if anyone could shed light (probably a chemist).
I painted a few bought resin miniatures about 6 months ago, primed with Vallejo primer, painted with Army Painter paints and sealed with 2 coats of Windsor and Newton Galeria Matt Varnish.#
They are stored in a black plastic container protected by foam.
Since finishing them they have lost about 50% of the vibrancy of their colours; getting duller by the day.
I am at a loss to explain this as no others I have have done this.

I've had glossed miniatures fade over time. Have you tried gloss-varnishing one and re-flat coating it? Also do you store them in a humid space as humidity is generally the cause for finishes to "fog" or give that pale/powdery look. This is occasionally solved by re-varnishing the miniature, etc.

Thanks for your thoughts.
Humidity very low where they're stored and no gloss varnish used at all; the other 30 or so miniatures in resin, plastic and metal are unaffected - it's just these three.
Will try gloss varnish and another dullcote; if no luck then I'll strip and repaint.

Is the box airtight? It may be that something in the foam is gassing off and clouding the varnish?
-
Yeah, some kind of chemical gassing could definitely be a thing. A lot of new materials emit a chemical smell, etc. for quite some time? Hmmm...still curious.

5 year old Citadel box that's had loads of miniatures in over the years.
The 5 metal figures I painted at the same time as these in the same colours haven't faded so whatever is causing it definitely involves the resin.
It may remain just one of those mysteries.

May well be the resin itself gassing off then.

That foam stuff can be a tad dodgy. Some of the Umarex CO2 pistols come in a very nice impact resistant plastic box. Inside they're lined with foam to take the popgun, pellets, cartridges and wotnot. Over time, one shooter in my collection, had a reaction with the snug fitting foam, the bluing went shiny and sticky then rubbed off when wiped with a bit of 4X2 dipped in gun oil...
tad dodgy that foam stuff.

Sounds like the resin is from a bad batch and has a porous quality to it and the paint work is being slowly ‘sucked into’ the model.
If it is that, then there’s not a lot you can do about it :?

This seems the most likely explanation, glad it's only three miniatures and not an army.
