Post by: Von Stroheim on July 18, 2021, 02:24:13 PM
The East is a new film about The Indonesian war for Independence from the Dutch. Looks pretty interesting cannot recall this conflict ever being portrayed in a film

You sold me. Would like to see that.
I tell you, if it is shown on Netflix or Amazon where
a number of people can watch it this will be the next big thing
in wargaming. Fighting in Dutch Indonesia... actually, where can
I get figures? :D

This is available on Amazon Prime in Germany, so I expect it will become available elsewhere in time even if it is not available just yet in your area.

Interesting. The father of a mate of mine at school served as a Dutch conscript in Indonesia, toting a Bren gun. He went all weird and ended up as an Anglican vicar. Son went even weirder, ended up a fundy Christian who home schools his kids.

Kit bash of Warlord Yanks and 8th Army. US tin hats, ex-USMC duck hunter fatigues and Brens and Lee Enfields. Sorted.

For anybody interested in this period - Madbob has a Marmon Harrington tank that might be of use  although might be from an earlier period.

A lot of the pre-war KNIL kit was captured and re-used by the Japanese in 1941/42 and then went back into service again with the post-war KNIL in 1945.  I've nothing specific about the tanks though.

I've seen it.
It is actually about the controversial actions of captain Raymond Westerling. His "Westerling method" for pacifying insurgent areas meant surrounding a village, rounding up the men and executing suspected insurgents on the spot.
The portrayal of events in the film has led to protests and calls for a disclaimer from several groups in the Netherlands.
I have no intention of starting a political discussion here, just pointing out that you won't find any of the major military engagements between the Indonesians and the Dutch in the film.
The uniforms, weapons and vehicles used in the film are historically accurate, except for the dark uniforms of Westerlings special troops. In reality they wore ex-USMC duck hunter fatigues.

Folks on TMP have suggested using Australian 14th army figures with American heads.  I have no idea what the indonesian forces would look like.

Australian 14th Army? I thought that was the British in India and Burma? There may have been some Aussies there.

My mistake.  I have always pictured them as Aussies.  I believe it was actually drawn from across the Commonwealth.

14th Army in India/Burma was primarily Indian (including the Gurkhas), with British, Burmese, West African & East African formations and major units, plus Indian States Forces (i.e. independent principalities) Royal Nepalese Army units at battalion level.  The Australians were fighting in the Pacific.  Plenty of Australian aircrew served in the campaign with the RAF though.

Indeed.

With head swaps, you could probably use the Eureka Australians as proxies. Empress do suitable heads in M1 helmets as well as British MkIII/IV turtle helmets, of which contemporary photos show tye odd one in use by Dutch troops. Other options might include the bodies of Warlord Brits, with US helmets and the 8th Army arms, to give you British weapons with rolled shirt sleeved arms. If you fancy a bit more shaving, filing and converting then you could probably use their USMC as donor bodies with weapons coming from the British boxes.

Might be of interest as it shows the variety of uniforms.

The old www.overvalwagen.com website was a treasure-trove of Dutch East Indies photos and while mainly geared toward the 1930s and WW2, there was some post-WW2 stuff in there.  It's tragically now defunct, but might be archived somewhere?

It seems as if this is a situation where you either choose to ignore the reality and just play a game, or see it for what it was, and label it ungameable.

There are some snapshots on archieve.org's 'Wayback Machine'.
