Title: 40K Squats
Post by: gamer Mac on July 20, 2021, 12:53:57 PM
40K Squats
These model are over thirty years old
And were painted a way back then as well, very little skill involved and no undercoat
The question is do I undercoat then repaint or do I try to strip them first?
I was thinking of trying detol, will it damage the plastic arms on some of these old guys
And don't ask what I intend to use them for I have no idea :D

I don't know; seeing as they've been simply blocked in, they might look pretty good with the application of a simple wash!

Some of my earliest metal minis were painted straight over the metal too. They looked great, but the paint rubbed off by just looking at them. So I only ever did the one squad like that. Afterwards, I always primed my models. At first by simply brushing on, later, when acrylic spraypaints became more affordable and available, by spraying them.

Whether or not to repaint is up to you and your nostalgia. Me personally, I've made it a point to never repaint my old miniatures, because they represent the pinnacle of paint skill at that particular moment in time. They might be cringeworthy now, but I was mightily pleased with them back when I finished them.

So unless you intend to use them along other miniatures in a new project, I'd leave them as is (or with a quick wash of Armypainter Strong Tone perhaps ;) ), but that's just me.

As for Dettol; I've never used the stuff, and I can't recall if it reacts with plastics yes or no. I have used DOT4 brakefluid in the past with OK results, and Simple Green from the US, with awesome results though...

But what is that on the last guy in the thunders squad?

Plasmacannon, 4x Heavy Bolter and 2x Multimelta in the second last picture (left to right), and the loose gun is another Plasmacannon of a slightly later design :)

Wash and a highlight and then a liberal dose of matt varnish  :)

Is it the unpainted gun you’re in about? It’s a multimelta isn’t it?

Yes, a multimelta. Check out the fab Squat collectors guide on the CCM wiki here (http://www.collecting-citadel-miniatures.com/wiki/index.php/Squat_-_Collectors_Guide#Heavy_Weapons)

Personally, I’d strip them with Biostrip 20 and repaint. I previously used Dettol which seemed to slightly soften plastic and sometimes discolour it. The plastic generally firmed up again after a while though.

The one on the extreme left in the photos?  That's another plasma cannon variant, I think the original one that came with the Squat and Imp stuff.  There were a couple in the early days.

The other one that you've got loose came with the Ork figs, but they should fit either.

That's a good start on a crew for Stargrave!

Does stargrave have Squats?
Also I have another 60 or 70 of their friends and their motor bikes?

Technically no but as you're allowed to use any minis you want you can fit them in. I plan on painting up some of my old squats for it. Always loved the squats but mine were boxed up on a shelf for 20 years or more.

I would just overpaint them with washes and highlighting myself as that way you keep the nostalgia of the paintjob of the time.
A couple of coats of matt varnish should protect them well enough once you are done.

You also get the added bonus of getting them finished quicker that way too, given that you have a fair few to get through.
 ;)

Impressive array of firepower there!

I recall the olden days of painting bare metal myself  lol

Does stargrave have Squats?

In Frostgrave I just used a straight-up crew of dwarves. There was no need for any special rules, since there is no difference between, say, a dwarf wizard and a human one. The difference is all in how you mix and match individual stats and spells. It's the same in Stargrave. You can just use a crew of space dwarves.

Nice job!

As others have said, you can use any minis you want for Stargrave. I made my crew from a bunch of my old RT-era Imperial Army and mercenaries figures.

It would be a goldmine if I ever thought about selling them :D
I couldn't let the little guys go, it would cost to much to replace them lol lol lol

Blimey!
 :o :o

Go for it, mate.
I have started on an Old Skool Marine Company and am really enjoying it.
Don't let the numbers put you off, it will be worth it in the end.
 :)

As for selling them: Don't do it!
These things are going up so much all the time that if you did want to replace them later it would cost you at least a kidney!
 ;)

Nice stash! Enough to do a small guild (bikers) army. Snag yourself a few Thudd guns and you could field a very decent mixed force.

Yes, they were released for Rogue Trader 40K and there was a Squat army list in White Dwarf 111.

Yes, they were in the "Black Codex", a small pamphlet in the 2nd Ed. box set.
I think they maybe had datacards for the Bikes too?

Oh yeah thanks for that, they never did get one of the colour codices, real shame >:(

Pretty sure, yeah.

Their best coverage was actually in the Epic Space Marine 2nd ed Warlords box, which also contained the 6mm Ork rules (because Orks and Squats were both lead by Warlords, of course).  There was more fluff about the Squats, their Hearth Worlds, and their culture than any other GW product I know of, and Epic gave them a slew of unique vehicles ranging from gyrocopter gunships to a variety of lumbering super-heavy vehicles that could give a Warlord titan a hard time to the Overlord airship, an armored zeppelin-style gun platform repurposed from craft built to "mine" the atmosphere of gas giants.

Good times.  Played pretty well on the tabletop, too.  Sadly there wasn't much new stuff that was suitable for 40K gaming, so Epic failed to save them from their current near-oblivion in the setting.  I think they've currently got what, two figs in the Necromunda Forge World range?  A sad turn of events.

One of the books for 2nd Ed had a picture or two of new squat models but they never came out :-(
