Title: A Fistful of Lead goes to Africa: Militia vs Red Brigades
Post by: crafty on July 26, 2021, 07:17:29 AM
This Sunday we played a four player Fistful of Lead (Galactic Heroes) game set in 1970s sub-saharan Africa. It was two-on-two game pitching African Militia/Israeli Commandos vs. a Red Brigade Terrorist cell. FFoL has a reputation for 'Hollywood' style gameplay, with the system having scope for players to create their own character sheets. The DIY approach is great for creating unusual or off the beaten track scenarios...

To this end the militia players had poor weapon handling skills (d8 shooting), but were decent at close combat (d10)...their Israeli Commando 'Advisers' were much better rated (d12/d10) and had the ability to call in aerial support in the form of a helicopter gunship.

The Red Brigades were fairly solid if not spectacular (d10/d10).

The characters all had differing strengths and abilities that came into play as the game progressed and things got tight. We've played this game a lot over the past year and it's always good fun, with falls, trips, blown up cars, miraculous recoveries, mis-fires, stoppages at crucial moments etc etc. Every game has a few classic moments.

I'd recommend the game for any player that enjoys writing and tinkering with their own scenarios, campaigns and characters.

Writing and setting up this game took a fair bit of effort, but it was good fun.

I wrote an AAR on my blog https://thisslapdashlife.blogspot.com if you wanna look at it but here are some pictures from the game.

Very nice write up of the game.
Interesting looking terrain.
Plenty of it to block line of sight and offer cover.
Thanks for sharing the AAR.

Nice scenario and AAR.  The FFOL rules are great for easily throwing together fun games like yours.

Thanks for the kind words & encouragement.

The terrain is mostly hand made, very slap dash compared to most of the diorama like scenery you see on LAF, but it's pretty cheap, robust and functional. Loads of cardboard, cork, PVA and craft paint. I really enjoy finding cheap ways to make scenery but it means I have a large box of crap in my garage for 'just in case I need a ____'.

I'm really fortunate that my club has loads of good terrain as well...because unfortunately, all my home made stuff is starting to take up more space than I'd like to admit.

Well done, there!

FFoL is becoming my gaming group's rules of choice, for a number of periods...
