Title: Lion Rampant - Early Gunpowder Artillery?
Post by: Mr. White on August 02, 2021, 08:29:37 PM
I was thinking about doing up some 100 Years War with Lion Rampant, but can't seem to find any rules for early gunpowder. Were there ever rules published anywhere?

If I recall, there's something in the rulebook about artillery being out of place for the scale and implied duration of the skirmishes that LR represents, and that artillery are best used as objectives rather than gaming pieces. Dan Mersey did put rules for handguns in the condottieri article he did for one of the magazines, and they're also on boargamegeek here (https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/1223592/optional-rule-handgonnes).

now that you mention it....that's starting to come to me. Well, the mention in the rules. I didn't know about the Condottieri article. I'll look for it. Thanks!

There are rules for artillery in Pikeman’s Lament, which is essentially the same ruleset, just with a different period flavour, so you could just adopt those. Essentially a gun has six crew, so operates like any other six figure unit in terms of dice rolling etc. Difficult to activate successfully though, requiring an 8 on 2D6 to fire…

The point about artillery being too powerful is a good one, perhaps a field piece would be too much for the period and scale of engagements, but....

In my HYW LR English force, I have included a pot d'feu as a small extra. I think you could reasonably field one as a Reduced Model Unit (is that LRor DR?) with the same stats as a larger piece, but it has an improvised, unreliable aspect that I think fits the period.
