Title: Dune anyone?
Post by: Ethelred the Almost Ready on August 03, 2021, 10:30:23 AM
Having just seen the latest extended trailer for the upcoming Dune movie I wondered whether anyone is gaming this and what figures you would use.
This movie should be a lot better than the David Lynch one (although I loved Sting in it).

It's likely that anyone gaming this was using the Lynch style for their armies... and I'd guess that Necromunda Van-Sar were always a good fit for the still suits.

Mordian Iron Guard would probably be good for Atreides troops (with trimmed hats).

I haven't had a chance to look at the new film in any detail but It seems to look a bit more "modern military" in a lot of aspects (especially with the Fremen)...

I guess it all depends on what direction you want to take it... it would be great to play in 6mm with massed blocks of troops, giant carriers and air-to-ground attack... and the worms would be easier to include at that scale too :) .

I believe there was an attempt made to bring teh Dune franchise to the world of miniatures wargaming. I believe I saw some prototype fremen and someone had build the walls around the atreides compound, rules were getting talked about... and then *poof* nothing.

Loved the new trailer and there is some good potential there for gaming, either directly or as inspiration as the kit/gear is more generic  8)

I reckon that Infinity Miniatures would be a great resource for a lot of the troops:

This one, for example :) :

If the movie is anywhere near as good as the extended trailer, a bit of a wait may also see some good miniatures coming onto the market. There has been a latent interest going back years.

There is quite a nice range in 20mm. I think it was mj miniatures.

I'm looking forward to the movie!
Has Hasslefree produced these yet? I'm gutted I never got them when you (AKULA) were selling them.

You are not alone, I only purchased a small subset of the more generic almost Cadians when that project came out, and would have loved to purchase the rest.   I emailed Hasselfree to inquiry, perhaps if others show interest to them they might be motivated to spin the molds again.

There was a really good demo game a few years ago (possibly somewhere like Hammerhead?) with a set of rules that were on the verge of printing, lovely terrain and figures.... will see if any of the family can remember more details

So how do people game Dune? It's one of my favourite series, but seems a bit hard to game due to the way how shields work. Most fights in the books are skirmishes around the sietches and these involve a lot of melee combats.

Echoing Malebolgia

How does someone game Dune?

Lynchs style is so generic as to be only lightly related to the actual book; everyone was running around with guns.

Although there are a lot of references to ranged weapons, I thought Dune took the de-democratization of warfare route, with personal shields rendering ranged weaponry generally obsolete (with some exceptions). Instead it was a semi-medieval style of warfare where you had an Elite soldier class or Aristocracy that engaged in borderline ritualistic melee combat.

The RTS games had a pretty good setup for it.
