Title: Lau is playing 'Guilders - A Life In Shadows'
Post by: Lau on August 09, 2021, 01:28:18 PM
So! After a very, very long corona break from painting and playing im finally back with a new painting plan!
My friend Søren (who some may know from his blog at http://bloodbeard.blogspot.com/ (http://bloodbeard.blogspot.com/)) have begun writing his own miniature skirmish game, called Guilders. The game is about competing thieves guilds who are going into an area of a huge sprawling fantasy city, to plunder some central target - and rob all the city-dwellers who happend to cross their path.
You play against each other, but the real threat is the guards, who keep coming, whenever the thieves make noise. I love the idea of the game, and i have been playtesting it a lot, so now im gonna paint up a lot of thieves, civilians, guards and of course houses for the city, and my guild!

If you think the game sounds interesting, you can join the community on facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/542579693413292 (https://www.facebook.com/groups/542579693413292) or take a look at the (current) rules directly at https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1QgOD7G3eYUppV07vF_K5aypvIg9NyuQu?fbclid=IwAR3WUwUKpvdCyRhA8boxD_kZkAcBUh_97LS7jC4UZiqT8mIDUh0OVYtT3Sg (https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1QgOD7G3eYUppV07vF_K5aypvIg9NyuQu?fbclid=IwAR3WUwUKpvdCyRhA8boxD_kZkAcBUh_97LS7jC4UZiqT8mIDUh0OVYtT3Sg)

Well enough talk! Here I am presenting my thieves guild: The Guild of Unaffiliated Grape Stompers!

Here are my enforcer, acrobat, tinkerer, brute, a pickpocket, a shadow priest, a charlatan and two burglars:

And here are my shaprshooter, bard, alchymist, my boss and three street urchins!

I love the group!
My Boss, Linda von Loudsprecher, is a rich noble who grew up in the southern wine country on a grape plantation. When her plantation went bankrupt, she liquidated all her assets and found a guild of wine stompers, that were not affiliated with the farms, the plan being that she could underbid the wine makers guilds, by offering them cheaper labour. It did not work out great, so to make ends meet she begun ordering her grape stompers to make money another way: stealing! The Guild of Unaffiliated Grape Stompers now only make money from thieving business, but Linda are still renting her stompers out toe the wineries, she is planning on taking a loss on this work until the large guilds recognise her work - until then, she must work overtime getting her money back, by robbing the city!

Yeah I am totally into it, its cool to play a game that just seems tailored to my taste :-) And I'll definetly keep this post alive with my paiting and pictures of games! You can also follow the designers blog, where he will update his hobby workings on the game: http://bloodbeard.blogspot.com/p/guilders-life-in-shadows.html (http://bloodbeard.blogspot.com/p/guilders-life-in-shadows.html)

I dont know those novels, but I will definetly check them out! The setting and system are inspired by fantasy heist novels, like the Mistborn series, The Lies of Locke Lamora and the Tarbean part of The Name of the Wind!

I have now painted up the first house! I must say it will take some time for enough houses to fill an entire fantasy city to be painted up! So right now I will focus on getting miniatures done, since the building can work being only MDF for longer, but I hate looking at unpainted miniatures :-)

Here is the house! And my thieves guild moved in right away, looking for a new hideout it seems!

Yeah that damn Time, I never have enough either! If you find the time to play a game, and you should - Its really good fun, we would love to hear your comments on the game! And if you have any thoughts from reading the rules, you are very welcome to share them :-D
And thanks for the compliment on my guild :-)

looking good.
Thanks!

That totally sounds like Guilders! I'll be sure to check it out!

And now I have finished to more guild members! A courtesan and another thief! I really love the thief miniature, such a cool sculpt with a great expression! Both miniatures will proberly serve as civilians as well, since i dont have any plans to include them in my roster, but its nice to have the option!

What a fantastic concept, hats off to both the original creator and to yourself for your work so far. Your gang (guild?) looks great, I really like the name and backstory.

I’ll be following your progress and will continue to follow Soren’s blog! Keep up the good work.

What a great idea!
I have just joined your FB group, so will spend some time looking into this further later.
 :)

I would definitely suggest you check out 'Among Thieves' and 'Sworn in Steel' by Douglas Hulick.
Some great ideas regarding a 'Thieves Guild' and it's organisation etc but also cracking reads too.
 ;)

Thanks a lot  :D

And now to some more sharing of pictures! I Have painted up the first four civlians for the game! These poor townspeople are just waiting to be robbed! They will put a clear fantasy look on the civilians, since they are all non-humans. The next batch of civilians will be more human. I think the ratio should be something like 3 humans for every non-human, but the miniatures from my lead-pile will definetly influence this, since I'll start with painting those civilians that i have laying around :-)

Thanks, Lau.  I like the concept of the game and will check out the links.   An excellent collection of minis for your guild members!

Who makes the "thief" with the candle, holding the keys behind his back?  I quite like him.

Thanks for the recommendation of the Douglas Hulick books, Mason.  I will be checking them out as well.  In turn, I will recommend P.G. Hodgell's God Stalk - but not so much the rest of the series. They are good books, but only God Stalk has an urban setting - and the city has a lot of character and the novel deals a fair amount with Thieves Guilds.   After the first book, our hero leaves the city (alas).

Thanks for the compliments! And yes, he is one of my all time favorite models. He is from the Dunkeldorf line (https://dunkeldorf.eu/ (https://dunkeldorf.eu/)). As far as i know he can only be bought here: https://kinggames.dk/shop/dunkeldorf-miniatures-343c1.html (https://kinggames.dk/shop/dunkeldorf-miniatures-343c1.html) He is called Linus. The models are cheap (6 euro) and they are shipped from Denmark cheaply enough. I love their modern old school warhammer look! And I'll be sure to check out God Stalk!

Haha, that must be a nice surprise  :D you must dive into your lead-pile then!

I have painted up two more civilians! And they sure look like they can afford to be robbed by my thieves guild! They just have 'target' written all over them!

Version 0.4 is now live, containing the first draft of the campaign system. Have spend a lot of time helping Søren Bloodbeard brainstorming and making tables, so I have not painted a lot, but some more civilians is done soon! The first campaing playtest is this thursday, and I am really excited to helt test the balance! I finally finished some more civilians! Im almost at the minimum 16 that i need, and I have just started the last three!

Love the models, they dont look as rich as my previous two civilians, but they will be robbed all the same!

So! We playtestet a game, trying to see how the campaign system works, and it seems fine after a single game, but a lot of testning is needed :-)

Our guilds were both trying to rob a temple complex, guarded by some paladins! I'll do a short recap, and link to Sørens long write up of the battle and campaign below.

So we both send thieves and street urchins out to tob the general city, while our heavier armed thugs were making their way to the temple complex. The doors were locked and we both tried to pick the locks, so we could get in, without the templars being angry. I failed to get through the tough lock, but Sørens crew had brought lock picks, and were quickly inside, sneaking around, trying to get the loot.
Seeing my chances were diminishing, i took the less subtle road and smashed the door, angering the Paladins, who attacked anyone in sight. One attacked my guys, and one attacked Sørens thief, who were quickly cut down. My guys were better fighters, and i quickly killed the paladin and looted his corpse, got into the temple and plundered it. Meanwhile on the other side, Søren managed to rob the temple, but could not deal with the Paladin (also due to the fact that i had send an acrobat with a bola behind his lines, who had entangled his Boss). He planned to escape with the loot he already had, and it worked fine.
All the attention i was making with the fighting and door breaking attracted the attention of the city guard who came storming down on me, so I decided to run for it as well, but not before sending in a fast street urchin to pick pocket a priest for even more loot.

Great game! I won and got enough XP on three of my guilders for a level up! and coins enough to buy some equipment, and only some minor injuries.

This is a really inspiring idea (I have shed loads of medieval/fantasy civilians that do not get out enough).

Your guild is looking really great. The game table looks good too, are the buildings in the game from TT Combat?

Thanks a lot! And yeah, its a perfect way to give your medieval townsfolk some playtime!

I do believe most of the buildings are TTcombat (nice and cheap MDF). My Opponent, Søren, have made a video about the buildings and his plan for the city if you are interested in seeing more, and getting a presentation of the buildings:

Thanks for that Lau. I have a lot of TTCombat buildings, mostly from the Streets of Venice range, but I have a couple of the WW2 French range featured in the YouTube link to add in now. I've gone for a brighter colour scheme on mine:

Wow! That looks amazing! I really love the colours! That is a great venice feel! And yeah, the ww2 buildings look fine in an older setting, and the roof walk-space is just perfect for skirmish games! What game are you playing in your city?

I use it in a variety of games. Renaissance duelling with En Garde, Steampunk using Wolsung, IHMN and my VSF adaptation of Sellswords and Spellslingers, as a fantasy city for Sellswords and we were just starting to use it as Watergrave for a Frostgrave campaign just before Covid (hopefully we will restart that some time soon).

And I have painted up 3 more civilians! Again from the Dunkeldorff range! Love the models! lots of personality!

I am impressed.  Love the theme and flavor of the game.  I've downloaded 1.41 and have given it a quick once over.  Cannot wait to really dig through it.

I might have just found the game to get my 15mm fantasy project back on the table (painting and gaming).

Have you thought about a pre-scenario phase to scout the area.

Casing phase:  Assign 1 or more guild members to a pre-scenario scouting mission to identify the richest or easiest marks.  These members  will not be available for the scenario as they have been seen in the area and would arouse suspicion.  You could even develop a skill set that allows the to appraise targets and therefore give in scenario benefits to the rest of the guild if they are successful.  Just my 2 cents.

"EDIT:  This would be different from the scout skill as it would occur before the senior starts. The individual casing the scene reports to the boss, relays info like locked doors, number and location of guards, etc."

Anyhow,  love your concept and will begin adding this to my current Zona Alfa project as priorities.

Thanks,  and good luck with the project.  I'll be following closely and might even get it on the table next month.

You rules have inspired me.  It's been a while since I put anytime into hobbies.  This hit at a lull in my soccer schedule with the players being on a 5 day fall break and I've managed to add 4 new buildings (Dave Grafian Paper craft) to my fledgling fantasy town scape.  I'm trying to figure out what type of base I plan to use (probably modular 12" squares) .  I'm sitting at about 20-25 buildings now.

Anyone have a suggestion for 15mm civilians?  The gangs and guards are no issue, but unarmed civilians at this scale I am short on.Might he to proxies more modern civilian for a bit or use zombies as stand ins.  Tonight after it gets dark I'll go through my fantasy and historical 15mm lead pile to see what I can find.

Battle Vallor might get an order from me if I can work in a practice game.  I know they have some items I can use.

Cannot wait to see your next update.

Thanks a lot! And a really good idea! Do you have any ideas to what the skill could do? excange loot tokens for higher loot tokens? Like Change a Loot 1 token to a Loot 2 on the table? Or more like working the loot tables after the game with rerolls on them?

Skipper: Irregular miniatures do a limited range of 15mm peasants that would be useful. Have a browse through their other ancienet/medial ranges and you might find other usable figures. They also have a range of wagons/carts and various livestock in 15mm.

I'm working on some ideas for a pre--game casing phase that I'll forward to you once I get a bit further along and the type it up.  (Edit: I'm old enough that I still work my ideas out on paper before digitizing them)  I'm trying to come up with 30 outcomes.  I noticed you are shooting for 100 options but have posted 30 one the lists you are still working, on.  I am working on a couple of ideas to add to some of your other loot lists too.  Use, modify,  or discard at your own pleasure.

I've got my first ground base done and enough buildings to try my first game.  I'll try and get a solo game in on our next rain out day.  My teams season ends on 7 Nov unless we make a tournament,  then I'll pass them to the spring coach and hopefully have time on my hands to play some table top games.

A quick update.

The following is an image of my developing 15mm fantasy town for Guilders.  Its on a 2 x 2 foot board.

Lau,

I'm PM you my ideas discussed earlier in the thread about casing.  I'll keep working on the idea as I have time.

Looks very nice, are they dave gaham's models?

I need to try the Guliders - I've got a lot of civilians, town guards etc. and I love rpgesque skirmishes.

Most of them.  Some are Fatdragon.

Edit
I'll start a separate thread to track my 15mm fantasy progress as I feel I'm usurping Lau's

Thanks, it is general always preferable for people to start their own threads for their work. It's more accessible for people to see.

Hey! My familys been having turns being i'll during the last month, so I had low productivity, and i even missed out on a planned weekend of playtesting guilders. Guess its the time of year, but really annoying none the less!

I would love to see your ideas! Be free to share them here or by private message! Sounds great! We try to make 30 to playtest with as a proof of concept before going all the way to 100 - since that takes a lot of time, but alle the tables have worked perfectly so far, so we will expand them as soon as possible. Have you seen 1.42 is out? It have a bit expanded tables. https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1QgOD7G3eYUppV07vF_K5aypvIg9NyuQu?fbclid=IwAR2PGlxykeMVV0b4zqo3jObdAGkTqr1uuGvE2zS0sQ7bQ-u1sMfwfnvOWvo (https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1QgOD7G3eYUppV07vF_K5aypvIg9NyuQu?fbclid=IwAR2PGlxykeMVV0b4zqo3jObdAGkTqr1uuGvE2zS0sQ7bQ-u1sMfwfnvOWvo)
I would love to hear about playing a solo game! And good luck with the games! I hope you make the tournament, even though it means less tabeltop time! What are you coaching?
And the board looks perfect! I am looking forward to see it filled with minis :-D

I need to try the Guliders - I've got a lot of civilians, town guards etc. and I love rpgesque skirmishes.

You should try it! It is the miniature game i have played with the most rpg elements -and its good fun :-)

Hi Elk. I dont really know what you mean. Could you expand on it?

Awesome setup there Skipper! Glad you're gonna give the game a try. Would love to hear how you find playing the game solo, that part still needs a bunch of work.

Lau,

I sent a private message to Lau with my first draft of ideas.  The formatting got lost in the PM system here In Lead Adventure Furum,  but I can send the original word docx if you want it.

Sorry to hear about the wave of illness.  It seems to be that time of year.  It's a bit scarier now with COVID too.  Best of luck on getting through it.

Bloodbeard,  Soccer season for us ends Sunday and I'll have a chance  some free time. Then once I get a lull at work Ill  get a game in.
I ll let you know how it goes once I do and send feedback.

I've attempted 3 times with no success.  I'm not sure why? It might be my security settings or the file might be too large.

The fourth attempt seems to have gone out.  Unfortunately I had to cut and paste and it lost its formatting.
