I thought it would be a good idea to make some Japanese hills that would be placed in the corners of a gaming table (as if I don't have enough to be getting on with) to go with my samurai army and terrain.
I've spent a lot of time researching Japanese buildings and surroundings and it would seem that the typical countryside in the Sengoku period would consist of flat areas of either paddyfields/cultivated land or normal 'rough' ground with hills almost appearing to be cut off at their base.
Obviously there are other types of landscape, marshes, river delta, rocky ground etc. But thise type seem to be the most prevelant as shown in the photo from one of my Gakken books.

So the idea is to make a couple of corner hills that could represent a vally head or if a river is included, a river valley.
The first one will have a shrine on the top and be rather covered in trees with a path winding between and the other might just be plain with trees for now, haven't quite decided.

I also found a new type of filler at my local Wickes. It's a lightweight interior/exterior fillar and has the consistancy of whipped cream, no joke, you feel like putting your finger in it and having a taste :P Goes on like a dream though. It's still drying at the moment so I can't tell you what it's like when dry but I'll be back tomorrow :)

*Edit* God my desk needs a tidy ::)

Ah, another carver of the polystyrene and gluer of the cork bark cliffs... lol
I like the sound of that Wickes whipped cream filler, James.
The B&Q filler I've been using is more like slightly viscous cake mix - but again, strangely light, slightly aereated almost... Must be something they are doing with fillers these days... ::)
Hang on a minute - your hill's bigger than my hill! B*strd! >:( ;)

Works everytime ;)

It's a 3.8l tub and it only cost just under £13 and I think it will last a long time. Even though it's got a fair amount of air in it I didn't seem to use that much in total.
Hang on a minute - your hill's bigger than my hill! B*strd!
It's a full ten inches ;D ;D
cheers

Is that a hill or are you just pleased to see me?
:)

Veryveryvery cool, jimbibby!

This makes my 'hills' look like mere road humps (albeit road humps sprouting grass and trees)! Will be most interested to see the finished article.

Oh dear, another case of "Hill envy" lol
Great stuff James, but shouldn't you be building impervious suits ;)

It would seem that the hardness of the new filler isn't all it's cracked up to be (no pun intended ;D ). It doesn't split or crack or shrink but seem to have the hardness of gone-off cake icing, and some of the thicker areas are still soft (I put it on at about 9:00 last night and it's been sitting in a warm cupboard)
I think it's only going to good for bulking things out and then going over with another filler of the normal type.
Oh, and Nick :P it's done ;)
cheers

Hehehe... You need:

So, I think what we're now saying is that your hill might be bigger but mine is harder ;)
lol

You have all obviously got money to burn if you buy it like that. 25kg sack + council pop makes a hell of a lot of filler for £7-£8 from a builders merchants.

Ah, but this stuff has lovely consistency Svennn... Best I've ever used.
It's a couple of quid for a 1KG tub - and no unseemly mixing ;)

I wanted some rubble and I had some cork floor tiles. I also had access to our coffee grinder.
I got my cork rubble and my wife got a new coffee grinder. And the bin got a smoke blackened appliance that smelt very strange.
lol lol It's so easily done... And they never understand...

Oh, yum. That stuff smells strange when it's normal, so I can only imagine how it smells after...

Apologies for resurrecting a rather old thread but I had a bit of spare time and the house to myself today and got the hill out of the attic and covered it in sand :D
I've also put styrene tube all over for the placement of trees (hence the bamboo rods to stop glue going down the holes)

I added a bit more on the overall footprint as it was decending a bit harsh in places, this should also allow for the placement of normal trees on bases.

I'll be colouring the ground this week hopefully and then putting on lots of different types of growies. For the cliff face, I might try and keep it a similar colour to what is there already as it looks quite nice and matches some cliffs that I've seen in Japan (better than the usual grey anyway :) )

Very nice and foresty :)
Look forward to the finished product.

That's a very hansome corner piece. I've had something like that in mind myself.

really nice, a perfect corner for a jp table!

Right then chaps, it's not even the New Year yet and it's done ;D ;D
I'm really pleased with the way it's turned out and I might just do another one for the other corner ;)
A simple rough coat of tan/grey/brown and then highlighted up to a pale grey/cream.

Then I added some green and brown washes to break up the surface colour.

Some tea leaves and a mix of greenery flocking later I was ready for the bushes/trees.

Small bushes to start and then larger trees and then to finish, proper sized trees :D

I am working on a little shrine to go on the top, but I'm going to cast it and add it to the catalogue so it'll be a while before it's ready (before April ;D ;) )

Wonderful... just wonderful!
Nice job.

That's nice, love the detail. This would make an excellent article for Irregular Magazine. If you're interested in submitting it as an article for issue 4, let me know, as I'd love to have this in the mag.
Cheers Jason

Very nice work James.
(Of course, we knew it would be... ;))

Looking good matey, ;D
Those trees are great.
-
That is superb work :o :-* :o :-* :o :-*

Beautiful.
I like the nonchalant way this is for the corner of the table, when many of us would want to to put it slap bang in the middle of the action!
