This week I have taken a bit of time off, so had a chance to actually do some hobby stuff for the first time in forever. So did a bit of scratchbuilding for a Colony 87 photo shoot next month.

Clad it in some plasticard off-cuts to give the paint something to cling too, then raided the bits box to slowly build up the detailing.

Added some black lava to dirty up the base earlier and might clad the roof too. Spent a bit more time cladding and riveting the roof.

Then a quick undercoat to tie it all together. I think it’s going to be a Ramen Bar as I have sourced some great peculiar posters that should look good.

BUILDING TWO
Waiting for some paint to arrive tomorrow, so started on another one - a Syd Mead/Bladerunner style parade of shops.
Started with another Warbases MDF building (Tire Store) and then just kept adding various Crooked Dice resin bits and stuff from the bits box. I have found the trick is to not think about it too much, stick it on and just keep building!
Only about half way round and loads of tidying up to be done, but think this one is shaping up nicely. A sneaky preview of one of the new sculpts from the upcoming Colony 87 Kickstarter too :)

Lovely work. Looking at it in its current state I do kind of wonder if you really needed that mdf kit at the heart of it all, it's pretty much vanished completely at this point. :)

AKA Vallejo black splodge. Proper name ‘Earth based acrylics’. Premixed gunk that you just paint on. Use it for tarmac etc. Love the texture of it :)

Oh, this is going to be a fun thread to follow! Really nice work on those buildings. For all my efforts I can't figure out how to work with MDF in a way that doesn't just end up looking like MDF.

This is truly great work. I was also going to ask about the cladding-its very effective. Probably the best sci fi buildings that I have seen and I am looking forward to seeing them painted.

Looks like Plastruct stuff. Easily ordered online, although any good model railroad shop will have a selection and can generally get any specific type you need.

After a bit of cladding, I have laid out the final section of the Colony 87 shop front. This bit took me a few attempts, but happy with it now. I have a robot junk shop and a street lawyer’s hab/office. These are using a few bits from the upcoming KS. Also found the perfect canopy for the general store from a bag of ancient bits - originally from a GW tank I think.

Noodle Bar painted. Prefer a minimal colour palette, so worked off a grey base with a primary colour, to let the colour in the detail pop. Lots of weathering fun too. A few bits to touch up, but pretty much done.

Superb job hiding the MDF skeleton too, I'd not have guessed that was the base model.

That came out well - love the run down appearance and the huge ads.

Nice work on those buildings.
Slaters embossed plastic card is great stuff. Those granite setts make a nice wall texture. The 7mm scale paving types make nice concrete block walling.
The little robots look great.

The back alley behind the parade of shops is taking shape. Had fun building a sci-fi door out of various bits. Will dress it with a few bits of rubbish, but it will be a lot less cluttered than the front!
Largely Crooked Dice resin: used the short walls from the Block House, buttresses from the Pipes and Pillar set, a couple of sets of Jersey Barriers for the canopy, the door is from the Shipping Container, minor gubbins here and there including the bonnet from the Interceptor!
Just one wall left to do!

Last exterior wall finished today. Then lots of cladding and extra detailing to hide gaps. Roof blocked out too, but need to paint the inside before fixing that down.
A bit more cladding needed, but nearly done, so I hope to get an undercoat on it tomorrow.

Scifi noir could be a thing. "Arcturus 3 was a gray world, aging gray colony buildings sprawling around the gray expanse of the landing field, swept by cold rain from gray skies." :)

Thank you! I use cheap Halford primers for an undercoat - black, grey and then white - occasionally red. Full black undercoat, then grey and white in lighter passes. Not quite Zenithal, but not a million miles away. This gives a natural highlight, and means you can sometime get away with a wash and get a nice result.
Base colours are usually applied with a sponge - building up highlights. Wash is usually Agrax Earthshade as it just works for everything. Highlights again with a sponge including some white passes to dull down colours - but thats coz I like a muted palette. Sometimes I cock it up, out want to knock it back more, so repeat the shade and highlight until it works :)
The other great time saver is the GW Typhus Corrosion for all the rusty bits. Painted on from the pot it’s pretty good, but a dry brush of Ryza Rust and white and it works wonders!

Today I got a coat of paint on the Dragon’s Rest Outpost. I bought this 3D print at the Games Expo a couple of years ago with Colony 87 in mind. It’s a lovely big multi-level lump and should work a treat in the background of shots. All done with spray cans. I used some Army Painter Wolf Grey, GW Zandri Dust and Halfords White as a nice muted palette. Started to add some detail colour after I took the pics, and its shaping up nicely.

Neat kit. Could really do a lot with that just by varying the paint scheme and maybe adding a little scatter. Anything from a clean utopian scifi look to the battered industrial feel early Star Wars had to a post-apoc/abandoned colony world motif could work.

Man, I look at that and just see a TON of print time. Really cool, but I can hear my poor Ender-3 begging for me not to print this. lol
Out of curiosity, how did the spray painting go? Did you notice any of the pieces warping? A couple of weeks ago I hauled a large number of terrain tiles (3d printed) outside to spray them and I ended up with some warped pieces. I wasn't entirely sure if that was caused by the sun/heat or the solvents in the paint. Fortunately, everything bent back into shape with a quick dip in boiling water and the paint survived the process as well.

I bought it printed at a show, but gawd knows how long it took!
No issues with spray. Just starting to add some detail colour and in fact it’s rather pleasant to paint.

Today was finishing off the big tank for the Colony 87 photoshoot. The bottom is what I think is a resin knock-off that I found cheap on eBay a while ago. The top is the GW plastic top to the Promethium Forge.
Lots of enjoyable drying-brushing, shading and a bit of weathering. Might yet add some chipping. The very useful Sarissa mylar stencil helps get you a far future symbol - just turn it back to front and upside down and randomly sponge on summat that looks about right!

Chipping away at stuff more Colony 87 stuff this week, building a few more bits and pieces.
Multiverse crashed spaceship is a really simple but effective kit. Chucked in a loads extra scrap around the bases. Landing pad is from Ziterdes - still some stenciling needed.
Got a big spray session in over lunch on a Necromunda Hab and some wall columns - plus some general scatter bits. So lots to detail up over the weekend!

This terrain continues to look absolutely lovely. I continue to be blown away by your ability to pull all the little bits and bobs together into such wonderful cohesive wholes (and a teeny bit jealous as I'd love to do such things but lack the imagination to see the potential of all the little accessories).

Cheers really enjoying it. Almost all the resin pieces are from the Crooked Dice range. Then its off-cuts of MDF, various GW scenery and MDF kits, Maelstrom Edge terrain sprues and whatever I have had sitting in the bits box for ages!
If there is a particular build you want to know the bits for just shout.

Colony 87 photoshoot is Monday next week, so been trying to build and paint lots of pieces over the last few days.
Three Habs - stackable for two storey options. These old Necromunda bulkhead builds are shamelessly ripped off from Jon Boyce - from his inspirational Magpie and Old Lead blog. I’ll definitely be building more of these in future. Slightly mucked up the PJs - but saved by a late application of Nuln Oil!
The industrial conveyor belt is a 3D print from Dragon’s Rest. Plus painted up some Zone Mortalis columns for general background fillers.
Finally, the wonderful wee yellow generator is from Oshiro Models. Going to paint a couple of Jim's new market stalls tomorrow.

So calling this done… for now. I was intimidated by mucking up the paint job on the shop front, so left it till last. Hopefully the last few weeks work have help me get ‘paint fit’ again, so I think it turned out all right in the end.
I’ve also painted a couple more bits including the great market stalls - new from OSHIROmodelterrain and a couple of the Crooked Dice Game Design Studio Hover Cars.
Everything is all packed for the photoshoot… rather a lot it turns out, but can’t wait to get cracking on Monday.

Not judging, mind you. I suspect that damn Shades of Gray trilogy may have really expanded career opportunities in the latter field even if it was one of the worst representations of BDSM culture ever.

Looks like the images were being shared from FB, hence why they are broken
