Title: 210913 - It's coming Rome again

Hund Händler was going about his everyday business when suddenly a pair of viscious Roman dogs fell upon him! The dog fight was on.

After a few years of either nothing or nothing but speed painting Warhammer Fantasy, I am slowly creeping in to painting LAF-signature project style stuff again... I guess old rust is hard to remove or whatever the adage is. Painting wise, I am relearning my old ways, and one of my first steps was putting away all my GW contrast paints.

For years I have had an inkling to make a Roman force. Actually the first Romans I did were used in a game called Vikings vs. Owlbears that I did in 2009. Originally, it was supposed to have been Romans vs. Skeletons, inspired by the then very young son of vikotnik. I did manage to paint a few Romans back then, and even a tortoise.

The years have passed fast, and now I am back at the table with Romans on it. The apalling Britannia show didn't exactly get the juices running, but luckily I stumbled upon the much more interesting German/Italian show 'Barbaren'. Now, that was almost like watching LAF-skirmish AARs. :D

I find the best way to start projects like this, is to have a solid frame and a plan. Like Matakishi who always pens down everything and then buys it and paints it. I have done none of that in this case however, as I prefer to let my inner butterfly roam freely. Instead, I have just thought about what I would like to achieve... if possible. The rules I have been looking at are Infamy! Infamy! But I am not entirely convinced, and am probably more of a XXX Rampant player when it comes down to it. There isn't a Eagles Rampant official book yet though. I am guessing there will be.

Luckily both systems are about 50-70 figures a side and at the end of it the figures don't care about the rules. So I will just paint 50-70 odd figures for the Romans and the Germans and then we can talk rules.  ;)

Well, this is a surefire to set up for failure/hubris. But wish me luck. I am going to need it. Ave Caesar!

(taking pictures is still beyond me, but I'll get there...)

Thank you Jimbob. Coming from you, I see this as a heartfelt gesture that clearly shows how strong bonds we have formed over the years.  lol

Muchos gracias mi amigos!

I am already contemplating vast forests, gently sloping hills and a wave of red capes... and little does it help in the actual painting, but the thoughts are there.

Slowly, but surely, I am arriving at the conclusion that lines of troops with period tactics and other such tat has little interest to me... I am more for the grand Hollywood skirmish with plots, characters and carefree existence.  :)

Broken Legions may interest you, in that case.

Even if the rules don't catch you,the concept might do.

Ah! Mark Latham. My Google/whatnot keeps intermixing him with the Australian politician... so the list of publications by him at my end looks rather diverse.

I was actually going for historical, but without the buttons, but now that you show me that front page, I realise that I am easily swayed.  :D

Me too.
No matter how much I try and do 'historical' I end up doing something a little 'fantasy'....

Nice work! Who makes the Romans' dogs? They look as though they would have some potential for other times and places, too, maybe in the Far East...

Hubrius Maximus and his pilum armed men chanting "It's coming Rome" as they snake their way through the Teutoburger forest for just one more victory before moving camp for winter.

My slow cooker Roman army project is moving forwards. I have so far primed figures enough for the rest of the year at the pace I am making.

I have never delved into Roman history before but the "History of Rome" podcast is just perfect for me. Each episode is some 20 min long which fits nicely with a run. I am also trying to get through the Netflix docudrama Roman Empire. I must say this style of documentary is a bit much for me... lots of dramatical music cues at every corner. Sometimes I just like it better when the narrator is an old grognard and half the visuals are stills.... haha!

I went and got some trays for the figures too. I am a bit split on the subject - it is nice while gaming, but it sort of looks a bit off with the spacing between the figures. Maybe when I have a full unit of 12, I'll snap a photo and you can see what you think.  :)

Nice brushwork!  Vikings vs. Owlbears or Roman's vs Skeletons sounds great.  Crying out for a Fistful of Lead game.  We've been using Lion Rampant for Ancients a bit recently too.  Lots of fun and doesn't need huge armies.

The next few pilum wielding maniacs are ready. At this pace the army will be ready for Christmas, I think.

I haven't added shields yet as I'm still trying to decide how I want these.

I did finish a couple of movement trays though. I don't really know if I like them for this. Have a look for yourself:
