Title: Perry Mahdist Ansars and British for the Sudan (updated 14 10 21)
Post by: TacticalPainter on September 02, 2021, 12:34:30 AM
The recent lockdown in Sydney has been the perfect excuse to revive my dormant colonial project. I've had two boxes of Perry plastic Mahdist Ansars waiting for some paint and a half started box of British infantry. Pleased to say I've finished off the first box of Ansars and the figures in the second are now assembled and waiting for primer.

I've gone with 3,2,1 basing for the Mahdists, I think it suits their irregular formations more than a sabot base. There's a blog post for those interested in more on the basing and painting here https://thetacticalpainter.blogspot.com/2021/09/321mahdist-ansars-are-go.html

Here are some pictures:

Thanks

Lovely looking figures.

I’m interested that you have mix round and ‘square’ bases for the Mahdists?

Thanks. All the details are in the blog post for much of the painting on both sets of figures. The British are based in VMC Khaki, washed with Agrax Earthshade, then highlighted with Khaki and then Khaki mixed with VMC Dark Sand.

It’s because they refuse to conform to oppressive imperialist conventions! Tribal is as tribal does 😉

Beautifully painted figures, I particularly like the flesh tones on the British.  The basing on the Madhits is an excellent idea , once you’ve seen it you wonder why you didn’t think of it yourself.  :)

Beautiful paint jobs, and subtly artful basing as well!  The Mahdists look great and the khaki British are simply gorgeous!

Those figures look really very nice indeed .
In particular I like the basing , gets  the "swarm look "just right .
Well Done .
Cheers

The project has moved along at a good pace and it has inspried me to finally taken the plunge and make my own terrain mat. Not quite as daunting as I imagined and I'm very happy with the end result and so I thought I'd document the progress and what I've learned for others in a blog post you can find here https://thetacticalpainter.blogspot.com/2021/09/making-desert-mat-for-sudan.html

Well done on the mat.
I just watched the Four Feathers movie(1939)again.
I watch it every couple of years.
I think by far the best of all the movies for the period.
I love the part of the gunboat coming up the Nile.

Agreed, but I did also enjoy Storm Over the Nile and the 1978 version since we had that in my VHS collection as a kid.

A cool thing about the Korda version is that the gunboats you see are ones that actually took part in the real Omdurman campaign.

And those are real Hadendowa, brandishing real swords in the mass battle scenes.  Shows how iconic those fellows are: They were shipped in hundreds of miles from the Red Sea coast, so the battle scenes would have the 'right' look (if it's the Sudan you must have Fuzzy-Wuzzies). So it isn't just wargamers who erroneously use their Beja figures for the inland campaigns, film makers do it too!  ;)

Wouldn’t mind betting some of those swords were used in the Omdurman campaign as well….perhaps even some of the Hadendowa were there as youngsters?

It's certainly possible. That was one show away from the coast that Osman Digna and his boys did make the trip for, even if they no longer had their iconic haircuts.

Added this Perry Gardner gun and crew to the British collection. Lovely Perry sculpts as always. This now gives me a 24pt force for both British and Beja for The Men Who Would Be Kings. Never played the rule set and so we will try it out later this week.

Completed a few rocky outcrop terrain pieces to go with the desert game mat. I've used pine bark as the basis for the rocks and I think it's a material that works very well at this scale. I've done a more detailed step-by-step of the process that you can find on the blog here https://thetacticalpainter.blogspot.com/2021/10/making-rocky-outcrops-for-arid-terrain.html

The core shape was made using insulating foam on an MDF base and the pine bark pieces were glued around it.
(https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1024x768q90/923/5EHu1a.jpg) (https://imageshack.com/i/pn5EHu1aj)

The top and sides were filled with household multi-purpose filler and textured with sand and cat litter.

Managed to get the figures and terrain on a table today and play a game using The Men Who Would Be Kings for the first time. We're familiar with the Mersey/Osprey line of rules and so found them straightforward enough and were playing the game without many rules queries very quickly. I took the British and they managed to beat off the Beja with devastating rifle fire, but not before they had swarmed the Gardner Gun and wiped out the crew. The asymmetry between forces means the Beja need handling with care and timing is everything, nonetheless they are no pushover. I didn't have my new terrain mat available so we used one from Deep Cut which worked quite well with my terrain pieces. Here are a few pictures:

May I ask, what was the name of the mat you used for the game?

Deep Cut perhaps? But what specific one?

Yes, it’s from Deep Cut, I think it’s called Savanna.

Found them on eBay, a supplier in China who sells them in bags of 20 or so. I’ve painted them, if you follow the link to the blog article about the rocky outcrops there’s a link in there to another blog post on how I made them/painted them. They are almost usable as they come but looked a little too plastic for my taste.
