I’ve been slowly adding figures that are going to be used alongside my Medieval collection in games of Fistful of Lead using the new fantasy supplements and Dragon Rampant for larger games.
I am being selective with choosing figures that I think will look right alongside knights, men at arms etc in my particular setting which is essentially C12th-C13 England.
First up a pair of wizards/magic users from the far Northlands.
William of Connolly:

Robert of Coltrane:
A friendly giant loyal to the wizards, Bernard of Breslaw:
A Dwarf Lord from the low-Lands, Sir Ronald de Corbett:

The beginnings of a Forest dwellers force, Dryads:

For scale purposes, I think they look suitably imposing and quite scary,

Lots more to come!
-
Nothing like a little bit of whimsy, and those Dryads are very well done. It'll be interesting to see who turns up next from the Halcyon Days of British light entertainment.
-
Super,smashing,great ! ;) :)
-
Fandabbydozee!
Wonderful painting using your new eyes 8)
-
All very good but the Giant is my favourite. :)
-
Great work! I love the color palette and aesthetics that you have gone for.
-
Lovely work 8)
They will get destroyed of course ;D
-
Very nice, I will follow this with interest, I like 'low' fantasy... as in, fantasy with realistic armour, clothing etc.
-
These look great. The pale base colour for the bases including rims is striking. Is that choice to blend in with a specific mat or board or just to look cool?
And those Dryads do look properly scary!
-
Lovely :-*
-
All very nice (and droll). Those dryads are particularly good. Are they GW?
-
A great start :-* - eagerly looking forward to more - much more.
-
Thanks for the comments chaps.
Boneio The base colour is the Foundry Sand Triad. I have used it on all my figures. I like the lighter base, I think it makes the figure stand out more.
Blacksoilbill Yes, the Dryads are the GW ones. I have another six figure group to make up as well. :)
-
Excellent additions to your collection. The ogre/giant is really well done and I'm so impressed I want one now!
Those dryads look very good too, I like the subtlety with the paint scheme and foliage.
Lovely work.
-
Nicely done, sir. The first Fistful of Lead Fantasy book is geared for precisely the setting you are working on.

Excellent, really looking forward to getting stuck into it. ;D
-
Nicely done with a mix of figures there 8)
I also have a box of those Dryads in the mountain, bought with a Saga: AoM Lords of the Wild army in mind.

Seconded
Despite the fantasy setting, I'm glad to see Sir Ronald is displaying the correct heraldry. Although I think D'or Fork Fauste quartered, might also be appropriate. ;D :D

lol
It was a tough choice as to which to go with. lol
Wait until you see Sir Peter of Dincklage . ;)

What about a halfling retinue as an ally? Sir Warwick Le Davis perhaps, or Sir Wicket de Warwick?

Sir Warwick will be making an appearance alongside Sir Peter and Sir Ronald. They have brought along their servant Kenny The Baker. ;)
-
very nice start!
-
lovely work on the dryads.
-
Some lovely painting right there
-
Fantastic, as always.
-
The Dryads are found in the vast forests to the east of the Mid-Lands in a region known as the Eastern Angles. They prey on anyone foolish enough to stray from the path or harm the trees….
Another six and an ancient Leader. (GW and the leader Reaper Miniatures.)

I have another four to paint plus another leader type, but am going to return to my Dwarves next. :)
-
Very very nice.

Brill :)
Lucky my skellies brought their matches >:D

Great work, the forest grows!

Those Dryads are great! :-*
-
How about adding a giant tree/tree giant to the mix?
-
Very much liking the dryads. In fact so much so that I've ordered some. I doubt they will turn out as nice as yours though.
-
How about adding a giant tree/tree giant to the mix?
Great idea! :)

Next batch of figures for the enchanted forests of The Nor-Folk in the Eastern Angles:
Reaper Miniatures Tree Nymph, I really enjoyed painting her.

Four more GW Dryads. This brings my total to 18 inc the Tree Nymph and the previous Reaper Miniatures Dryad, Three six figure units for Dragon Rampant.

Three tree giants, 3D sculpts printed for me by my good friend Dr De’Ath. I think they blend in well, I have another three on the painting table at the moment. :D

Is the nymph the bones or metal version? I'd gotten one of the early bones ones that didn't turn out so well there

Beautifully painted minis - thanks for posting the images.

great project Nick
Love the nymph :-* I have the dryad's in my wood elf army but yours are scarier :o
I like the treants again better than my GW one
-
Nice buttocks, Nick 8)
In fact, great job all round :D
-
Ooooh!
He paints!!!
:o :o
Excellent start on what is becoming a lovely cohesive army liberally dosed with a smattering of cheese from the 80's!
Nice work, Sir.

Unicorns and faeries next… ;D
Not the first time I have heard you say that.....

They're all coming together nicely Nick.

Last of the tree giants completed, I changed the wood colours to give them a bit of variety.
That’s six in total.

You planning on doing a "next size up" tree-folk as well? GW has their kit that's pretty compatible with the dryads you've done (and sturdy enough if you leave off the worst of the coiling vines and frippery) but I'm rather fond of the one from WizKids:
Plenty of others out there, of course.
-
Fine additions to the collection 👍
-
They look great, lovely work on the wood tones.
-
They're brilliant, much more tree-like than the usual ents.
-
Nice additions - this army just gets better and better

Found deep in the Enchanted Forests of the Eastern Angles are the Nor-Folk: Creatures of myth and legend.
A Faerie, protectors of the forest, mischievous by nature they can be helpful or a hindrance to travellers….

Lovely work, Sir!
Those bases really are setting things off very nicely indeed.

Thanks for commenting. I’m really pleased you noticed. It took me ages to get the flesh tones right. :)
"I'm just practicing my flesh tones" is my preferred explanation when working on nudes. Although to be honest, most of the ones I've done have been commission work, so I guess I could blame it on the customer and needing to eat. It's 2021, seems silly to get fussed about naughty bits on our little metal figurines when we've got politicians sending unwanted images of their genitalia to people on a regular basis. :)

In the Mid-Lands there are two types of Dwarves, those from the Highlands in the far North and those from the Lowland border areas.
In the lowland borders the Dwarf clans have adopted human dress and culture. They cut their beards short and favour human style arms, armour, and emblazon traditional heraldic devices on their new style of shield.
Here is the Dwarf Lord, Sir Peter of Dincklage.

Brill. Love the shield 8)
-
Absolutely brill :-*
-
Lovely, a lovely crisp job on a great pose.
-
The pattern on that red and white shield is great! Beautiful overall painting on the figures, too.
-
Thank you chaps. It’s the correct design for the Dincklage family. ;)

Excellent pj,another doughty chap to swell the ranks :-*
-
Excellent shields! That’s decent freehand!
-
The shield is amazing :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
figure is very nice too
-
More quality additions!
That shield is superb, you really are getting pretty good at this lark.
:-* :-*
A note of caution, though: Do slow down, old chap, wouldn't want you to burn yourself out!
;D ;)
-
Fab,the shields are excellent :-*
-
"Sir Ronald de Corbett"
lol lol lol Now I feel old for getting that...
-
Very jealous of the crisp brushwork on those shields :)
-
Great brushwork all round, but that shield is fantastic :-*
-
Beautiful work and lovely shading. What scale are they? The dryad looks like 10mm Forest Dragon.
-
Lovely crisp work
-
Jolly Nice, another great addition to your collection.
-
Beautiful work and lovely shading. What scale are they? The dryad looks like 10mm Forest Dragon.
Thank you.
Everything is 28mm. The Dryads are mostly GW, the Dryad personalities are Reaper, the Dwarves are Hasslefree. The large Tree Ents were 3D sculpts printed out at different sizes. Nothing is 10mm.
-
12 Sprites/Pixies from Eureka Miniatures to round out my woodland force.
I’m not entirely happy with how they came out. I rushed them somewhat using contrast paints. I ended repainting the swords and loin clothes. The flesh isn’t perfect but they’ll do en masse.

Loving this group that you are putting together.

Just caught up with this thread, some great work!
I really like projects that start off historical and then shade off into fantasy like this one, and am gradually doing something similar with my 16th C English Civil War/Thirty Years War collection.
The 3d printed tree beasts a few pages back are fantastic - do you remember where the 3d files came from? (if you posted that, I missed it, apologies!)

Thanks for the comments folks.
Dr De'Ath kindly printed them for me, I'll ask him if he can remember where he found the files.

Fine additions indeed 8)

I'm very impressed with those. Some top notch work there.
-
I like them very much
-
They are brilliant :-*
-
Jolly Nice :-*
-
Very nice work on those. The little additions really add character to the already lovely miniatures.
It is also good to see Hasslefree dwarfs next to GW ones. There is a little size difference but not too much as to be jarring - it has spurred me on to grab some HF dwarfs next time I work on that particular part of my collection.

Thank you.
The Hasslefree Dwarves are delightful sculps and are a joy to paint The GW are a touch smaller, but I think you can get away with it for a less armoured and bareheaded figure. I have yet to see how the Oathmark metal figures scale up next to them. The plastics are much taller.
-
like them a lot :-*
-
Excellent dwarfage, Nicholas. The shields are brilliant. Your painting is getting just too good. Stop it immediately lol

Here are some of the characters on a recent jolly to expel a necromancer and his skeleton horde from the ruined temple of the Seven Tears of Wisdom.

Played the second of our Fistful of Lead Fantasy games yesterday, this time the Dwarves had an outing against an Orc force intent on burning and slaughtering a human settlement in the Mid-Lands.
Here is a link to the first Game the Dwarves appeared in just in case anyone missed it.

Onto the game, with a couple of shots to set the scene, the village of Cumwinton on the Trickle. The Orc attack will come from across the bridge.
Dawn breaks and the sleepy village slowly comes to life, unawares of the horrors yet to come. Figures and terrain boards from my collection, buildings made by the excellent OshiroModelTerrain

The orcs crossed the bridge quickly led by the huge Troll and started to set fire to the cottages on the outskirts of the village. The thatch roofs caught fire quickly and the rampage began!

One of the scenario conditions was that every time an orc was killed some villagers would join the fight, encouraged by seeing the enemy killed. An early kill by Bob Mortemur the archer meant three armed villagers move cautiously forward, wary of the huge troll rapidly approaching:
The Dwarves hampered by slow movement due to their short legs and heavy armour took a while to catch up. Sizing up the Troll they wondered which would be brave enough to go first:
Unfortunately things didn't go well and both Peter of Dincklage and Herve de Villachaize fell to the combined efforts of the Troll and the Orc Chieftain Grimfoot Ironballs.

What became of the rest of the Dwarves and the Mage you may ask? Sadly the Dwarves perished in a fireball sent from an Orc shaman:
One lucky shot from Bob the archer and the Orc chief was dead. Unfortunately Robert of Coltane, a mage of dubious origins failed catastrophically (he rolled a one) to ignite a lightening bolt which he was preparing for the Orc Shaman and managed to send himself to the Netherworld instead with maximum damage on a wound roll.
So the remaining Orcs (an archer and a Shaman) won the day!
Another excellent game of Fistful of Lead, the action ebbed and flowed, at one point it looked like the Dwarves were going to win only to see victory snatched from their grasp by catastrophy! Much fun was had by James from Oshiro and I.

Fantastic stuff!
I'm particular interested in your river actually... do you have any detailed shots of it? Is it built into a terrain board? What technique or product did you use for your water effect?
(whenever I see a river I like I want to know how it was done, and I store the information for the day when I finally make my own river terrain boards!!!)

Hi,
Thanks for your comments.
The river board is two 6mm MDF boards glued together with the river shape cut from the top board. It was painted several shades of blue many years ago and then topped with approx 8-10 coats of gloss yacht varnish.
I decided to refurbish the boards a couple of months ago as the river was too blue so I bought a tin of gloss wood stain and gave the river two coats. It has had the desired effect of darkening it down. I then added the reeds and bullrushes later.. you can get the wood stain in various shades of pine through to dark woods. It’s very much like varnish with an ink added.
It’s a pretty simple, basic technique, the effect is mostly down to multiple layers of varnish to give it depth and how the light reflects off it.
-
This all looks amazing. I’ve not played Fistful of Lead rules, but they can give a good a game with only 5-6 models per side? I’m on the lookout for a very low model count fantasy game, so this is interesting.

They are designed specifically for groups of 5-8 or so figures per player. Perfect for small numbers of figures and players.
-
Absolutely they can. We've played with 5 figures each quite regularly. For the Fantasy dungeon stuff you will definitely want some dungeon denizens too.

Aha, another vote for yacht varnish then. It's either going to be fancy resin water effect product, or varnish. Thanks!

Great figures and terrain. Very inspiring.
Is the surface texture on those Gripping Beast shields from the castings or your paint?

From the castings, they are quite pitted and uneven.

I have been looking for a suitable Dwarf magic user for sometime and was struggling to find one that fitted my low fantasy setting until I stumbled across Crippled God Studios. I love the sculpt but was disappointed when he arrived to find he is much larger than my Hasslefree Dwarves. I’m not too concerned though as I have rationalised a reason why the size difference…….
Human/dwarf couplings in the far North are not uncommon amongst the barbarian tribes where human and Dwarf tribes live freely alongside each other. Sigmund was the product of a Dwarvish father and a human mother. The ability to use magic is rarely found in Dwarves, yet Sigmund developed magic skills at a young age, a trait inherited from his mother who was a wielder of magic in her own right. When Sigmund reached manhood he was fully trained in rune casting. Along with his brother Ragnar he travelled south looking for adventure…

That's a fine miniature and nicely painted. How big does the figure turn out to be - is he Oathmark dwarf sized or GW LotR sized? Can you do a comparison shot as I would like to grab one if he is not too big.

Nice miniature Nick. I think I saw this guy the other day at the off ramp asking for change.

He’s huge (hence the fluff about him being half human). :?

As I only intend my Dwarves to be for small 5-8 figure skirmish groups I am not so fussed about the massive discrepancy. I might add him to a band of Frostgrave Barbarians in time. I think he will look better as a half man/Dwarf alongside them. His clothes also fit the barbarian style which partly why I bought him. Other than him I haven’t found a suitable low fantasy dwarf wizard I like. :(
-
If it's a 3d print some places will scale it down for you before printing.

Nice looking game some very nice figures
I may have a dwarf wizard you can have never been able to use him in warhammer or DnD
old games work shop. I will post a picture when I find him

The first campaign game between my Dwarves and James’s (Oshiro Model Terrain) Orcs using Fistful of Lead Fantasy.
We plan to play a number of games in the coming weeks and look forward to sharing the fortunes and misfortunes of our retinues as they battle each other and possibly other forces in the borderlands of the Mid-Lands.
Scenario One: A clash of arms somewhere along the disputed borders of the Dwarves and their hated enemies the Orcs.
Sigmund the Runemaster and his retinue of mercenary knights.
Sigmund has an Arctic Fox as his familiar. His Sergeant/second in Command is Sir Ronald de Corbett seen wearing yellow and black. Other members include Sir Peter of Dinklage, Sir Herve de Villachaize, and bowmen James of Moir and Robert de Mortemur.
The Orc horde: Zhog the pot bellied, Bogrot Twinkle Fingers, Daisy the troll, Goblod, Margot and the Shooty Lads.
They outnumber the Dwarves and include a fearsome Troll, but will this be enough to beat the well armed and trained Dwarf knights?
The initial set up: The Orcs will enter by the bridge crossing into the Dwarf lands. the Dwarves will begin in the bottom left corner and will make their way along the road.

The Orc shaman flexes his muscles and creates a briar hedge to shield the view of the orc force to protect it from the Dwarf bowmen.
The orc archers move to and occupy the ruined tower, intent on sniping at the slow moving Dwarves.
However the Dwarves prove to be the better archers and take out two of the Orcs in rapid succession.
An orc warrior pushes his luck too far getting too close Sigmund who casts runic spell and fires a thunder bolt wounding the Orc.
The Orc shaman attempts to maintain his briar hedge spell, but unfortunately rolls a one meaning the spell backfires and he takes a wound and collapses. Oops! lol
(https://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/54/86-090422155102-54839933.jpeg)
However the Troll senses he can close the gap and engage the Dwarves knights in one move and charges forward.
Wielding a fearsome giant axe he wounds both Sir Ronald and Sir Herve with ease and both crash to the ground
(https://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/54/86-090422154834-548371732.jpeg)
Sigmund is left exposed as the troll lumbers forward, however he is no pushover and proves to be a match for the troll, wielding a deadly sharp sickle, he steps forward bringing his weapon down he deftly carves a deep gash in the surprised Trolls neck who falls to the ground out of action.
The battle hangs on a knife edge as the Orc leader charges forward and attacks Sigmund, the more experienced Orc almost kills Sigmund who is saved by his fox familiar who takes the killing blow instead. Sigmund recovers and with the help of Sir Peter they defeat the Orch chieftain much to the surprise of James. lol
(https://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/54/86-090422155102-548401369.jpeg)
Now the battle turns quickly as Sigmund unleashes another spell blasting the remaining Orc fighters.
The only remaining Orc is the shaman who decides the odds are no longer in his favour and decides it’s time to head home before the vengeful Dwarves catch him.
As it’s a campaign those figures who were put out of action roll to see if they were just wounded or food for the crows. Despite James significant losses most will live to fight another day.
The Dwarves by contrast ended with just one wounded and the tragic loss of Sigmund brave Arctic Fox familiar.
We look forward to the next encounter in the coming weeks. Playing a campaign puts a different perspective on the game, perhaps making one care more for the characters, not wishing to see them expire makes the game more exciting and nerve racking. Can’t wait for the next one. :)
Finally an example of James’s shocking dice rolls: All he had to do was roll two D12s and pick the best one. With FFoL being a card activated system some cards have special options. In this case James could re roll one dice if he wanted. So he did and rolled another one. lol lol lol

Here’s a brief resume of the second game in our Fistful of Lead Fantasy campaign. The Dwarves having successfully put of of action most of the Orc raiders set about celebrating their victory long into the night at their makeshift camp a few leagues from the battlefield. Unbeknown to them the remaining Orcs seeking revenge have followed their tracks, watched and waited as the Dwarves succumb to the effects of their favourite beer.
The game is set with half the Dwarves fast asleep, the remainder struggling to stay awake on watch as the Orcs eager for revenge begin to creep up on their unsuspecting enemies…

The Orc leader a bit to eager to wreak havoc moves forward too quickly and is spotted by Sigmund the Runemaster, who not as drunk as he appears casts a rune sending forth a bolt of lightning which puts the Orc leader straight out of the game.
The remaining three Orcs sensing it maybe over quickly for them charge forward. Their Shaman responds casting a nasty spell on the Dwarves who are grouped too close together in the camp wounding three and killing Sigmund’s Arctic fox familiar.
Things go from bad to worse for the Dwarves, poor dice rolls mean three of them go out of action before they eventually bring down the remaining Orcs with skilled archery from Bob de Mortemur and James of Moir.
Sir Ronald de Corbett takes on the Shaman.
His overconfidence in his superior weapons training and armour is his undoing as he is knocked down by the Shaman.
Sigmund is also gravely wounded by a particularly unpleasant Orc wielding a nasty axe.
The rules for campaigns mean figures put out of action are not necessarily out for the duration of the campaign. A roll is made for each figure to see the severity of their wounds, some recover quickly, others miss a game or can end up food for the crows. So after some tense rolls here are the participants in the next game to be played this coming week.
The Dwarves are missing Sigmund their leader/Runemaster.
The Orcs are also missing their Shaman magic user but have the dreaded Troll back for the next game.

It’s going to be a tough one for the Dwarves….

A little tale of excitement; being the third game in our little campaign :)
This was a really short game, almost as short as Nick's dwarves lol
An emissary was lost in the wilderness and it was by the pure luck of the dice that he wandered into the clutches of my orcs >:D
Even with the added nuisance of some roaming wolves it didn't stop Zhog the Pot Bellied grabbing him and 'persuading' him to come back to his cave and talk about what the future might hold...
Unfortunately, the lighting wasn't the best as the sun was shining through the window at various points during the game.

Nice to see you continuing this, it's one of the main things that the nee FfoL Fantasy rules were designed for . I can see it being a real grudge match. Lovely terrain and figures, as usual.
-
Looking forward to seeing how that emissary gets on with Zhog,if it's a recipe book he's holding then all should be well :o lol

My heart goes with the greenskins on this one

It reminds me of a Tom & Jerry cartoon.

Great fun to paint, Siegfried comes from Stonehaven Miniatures in the States. The fox is a 3D print supplied by my good friend Dr De Ath.

Great work!

Grumpy Santa is gonna get a spell up his jacksie >:D

Like the new addition and glad to see a campaign going.

The fourth game in our ongoing campaign sees both the Orcs and Dwarves searching the site of a long dead dragon for treasure and coming to blows as usual. Things didn’t end well for the Orcs, the whole warband was wiped out but some will survive for the next game.

The dwarf retinue pose for the pre match obligatory photo. Having spent some of the renoun points earned from previous games they have added two new members to the group, Sir Michael of Rappaport with his battle axe and a crossbow armed regular.

During the last game the Orcs found a ring of teleportation and decided to give it to the troll who immediately teleported behind the Dwarves. Dwarf archer Robert de Mortemur unphased by the sudden appearance of the troll to his rear turned and with one expertly placed arrow between the eyes shot the troll dead, Much to the amusement of his fellow warriors. lol

Meanwhile his sneaky shaman crept into range of the Dwarves who were busy looking for treasure and unleashed a lightning bolt killing Sir Ronald de Corbett.

The Orcs stumble upon a human lady who has been hiding amongst the rocks, she’s not too keen on spending time in their company and flees in the direction of the Dwarves.
Hello pretty!
Oi! Come back here!
Distracted by the sight of lady the Orc chief, a great target perched on his rock and is soon taken out by a thunderbolt from a successful rune casting by Sigmund the Runemanster.
The Orcs continue to chase the lady who is still not keen on their advances.
Meanwhile the Orc Shaman continues to sneak forward unfortunately for him, he’s now within range of Sigmund who unleashes another rune blasting the shaman into the netherworld.
The remaining Orcs sensing their time is running out make a last minute charge, the Dwarven warriors eager for a fight run to meet them.
What should have been a quickly won fight by the better armed and trained dwarf lord Herve de Villachaise turns into an epic fight with neither side taking losses. Sir Peter of Dinklage joins the fight eager for Orc blood.
Eventually the battlefield falls silent with all the orcs dispatched. Two Dwarves lie mortally wounded; Sir Ronald and Sir Herve. Both survive the post game recovery rolls and will live to fight another day. :)

It was a bloody blood bath lol

Excellent game, once again.

It’s one of his favourite characters as well, which makes it even more amusing lol

Is there a campaign theme or wider objective, or are you just making it up as you go along?

Those old Citadel trolls are cracking models. It's nice to see such a cool mix of figures old and new fitting in so well.

Aryanne du Croix an Aes Sedai from the East, she travelled to the Mid Lands as a child. Naturally gifted in channelling the elements from a young age she has never gone hungry and will her services are always in demand to anyone willing to pay handsomely. This work often dangerous has necessitated her learning the use of the long sword for further protection, a skill she also excels in…

Great additions 😎

Do the familiars have a use in the game rules?
Yes, they can be used as a battery to use to cast spells more frequently and they are a distraction in combat to your opponent and can absorb wounds directed at the owner. :)

The first outing for my Fae army was a Dragon Rampant battle yesterday against Captain Blood's Orc horde led by a nasty wizard. Boo Hiss!
We maxed out with 48 points on each side. The Fae lined up opposite the Orc horde, quite the spectacle the Orcs made, nine units many of which numbered 12 figures. The Fae on the other hand were mostly six figure units. Their force looked very light in comparison, but would their Fae magic be enough to see the Orcs off?
As with Rampant games activation is unpredictable and the Fae made the best of it, racing across the table towards the Orcs who took their time moving forward. The Fae plan was simple, to charge straight into the Orc line using their superior movement speeds. Unfortunately the Fae lacked many missile troops with only two units of Pixie scouts who had any shooting ability.
The Fae crossed the middle of the board and came into range of both the Orc archers (who were many) and their wizard. Unfortunately for the Fae they lost initiative on several consecutive key rounds which meant the Orcs could rain down arrows upon them along with power bolts from their wizard. This caused the Fae attack to falter, their number were reduced and several of the units were battered and had to withdraw to recover. When they eventually charged forward their numbers were depleted and they were unable to break the Orc line.
Dryads charge the Mumakils

Tree Ents lumber towards the Warg riders.
The Dryads were unable to bring down the Mumakil, so they left it to the Ents who drove them from the field along with the Warg riders.
On the right flank the Dryads managed to charge Saurons Orcs and push them back.
However the Dryads depleted in numbers are charged by a rather nasty giant and driven off.
The Pixie scouts unable to evade the giant are quickly dispatched. Their bows no match for his raw strength.
From her vantage point the Fae commander witnesses the destruction of the woodland folk army, even her powerful magic cannot save the day from the Orc horde despite seeing off the Mumakil, Warg riders, and Haradrim the orcs just kept coming!
She orders a retreat into the forest to regroup!

I have to say, Malamute’s Fae is a beautifully curated and painted army. Quite delightful in every respect.

Marvellous write up and great to see the fae getting their first run out. Shame those evil orcs and their even eviler general spoiled it.

The battlereport was fun to read, the game looked brilliant!

Love the giant is he the old Grenadier miniature?

He is indeed :)
This is him…

I have one of those giants in my collection. He’s not as well painted, but he’s a favorite anyway - really fits my imagined picture of what a giant would look like!
-
Great looking model. I have (somewhere) both versions of that giant and the really huge battle giant Mark Copplestone dis for Grenadier. They’re really great models that fit into a lot of settings.
The giant doesn’t look out of place here. Great painting (as usual)! :-*
-
I really like that giant; the rest of that small warband look pretty slick too. Lovely painting.
-
Superb looking game - the Fae’s win on style.
Which is all that counts, right?
-
Good to see you folks are still at it. Well done!
I'm very much inspired to do something "Lord of The Hobbits" these days, using primarily historical figures as I think we once discussed.
And Dragon Rampant is just ounces of fun. Does exactly what it says on the tin, without endless delays.
-
Some more Dryads from Conquest Games Myths of Albion range to add to my Woodland army. Fun and easy to paint using GW contrast paints. I’m not sure you can really see all the different shades in these photos, three or four different tones on each one. Not my best photos.
I really like this one riding some sort of tree boar…

-
Fine additions to the collection 👍
-
These are great - there's a very Mythago Wood feel to that chap on the boar.
-
Very unique sculpts,e specially the tree boar. We all now the bulk standard Ents, but these I really like. They are also well painted and have good contrast.

Me too! :-*
Great mini, well executed!

Oh, I think you’ll find they did lol
They did look lovely on the table though :)
-
Oh, I think you’ll find they did lol
Oh, DO tell.
Was their bark much worse than their bite? lol lol lol
-
Nice work - is there anything Forest-Mythos related that you’ve yet to find a mini for?
-
I reckon some monstrous forest spirits/constructs would work as a sort of greater warbeast unit? There are loads of suitable figures available from people like Reaper and on My Mini Factory. A forest dragon could also be really cool.

Really lovely work! It's really nice to see your choice of low fantasy miniatures, particularly when the market is so saturated with high fantasy models. I'm also really enjoying seeing your selections, and how well they all work together.
-
Great work there, very effective paintjobs.
The Conquest Games 'Myths of Albion' range have a lot of very quirky stuff with strong themes and the 'Wealdgeist' (forest spirits) range is constantly growing.

Cheers Paul, your brushwork inspired me to dive into this range. :)
I’m waiting for the new Sprites and Dryads to come out before I order more. I’ve got another six of these and one of the large Ents up next :)

Very nice I like those conquest woodland creatures

Six more Conquest Miniatures tree spirits from their Myths of Albion range. These were fun to paint, not too taxing using washes of GW Contrast paints.
They complete a 12 figure unit for my Dragon Rampant Woodland army.

Nice work on the bark tones.

Well done Nick - you’re certainly making a lot of progress with this army 8)

Conquest Games Myths of Albion Tree Ent, I really enjoyed painting him, it’s hard to see in the photos, there are three different browns, two greens and several different dry brushes. I’m pleased with the results and I added some moss on his shoulders and arms and plenty of growies on the base.

Great work Nick

Great, imposing looking figure! The knight taking it on alone seems a little over-optimistic ;)

The last of my planned large single model additions to the woodland army. A massive Tree Spirit, he comes in at just over 160mm tall, so is huge compared to the previous ones, (the tallest being 70-80mm).
He is a 3D print, the same design as I have added before (printed by Dr De’Ath ). I wanted this one to stand out (more than he does anyway,) with extra branches and foliage. I was originally going to drill and add some fuse wire branches textured with Greenstuff but realised I still had some left over pieces from my GW Dryad sprues that would do the job just as well and a lot quicker.
A look though the spares box found sufficient to add ten extra branches. Once glued I strengthened and textured the bonds with some Greenstuff. He was painted with a combination of five different washes of GW contrast paints and two different dry brushes. I am really pleased with the finished model. Let’s see how he does in a game of Dragon Rampant. :)

What a stunning miniature. I had an instant reaction of "I must get that mini"! Outstanding paint job, you really made the wood 'pop'. Loving this log.

Great work! 👍

Amazing! o_o
Great paint job on such a large mini. He will certainly get everyone's attention on the game board.

That really is excellent. A great figure and a paint job to match.

Yep, I suspect he’ll be a magnet for archers, wizards and everyone else 😂
-
That’s a very impressive figure and you have done a great job with the added branches and painting.
There’s something about the lack of an obvious face on that figure and the smaller versions that adds to the ‘alien-ness’ and makes them even more unnerving than a typical ent or dryad figure. That aspect appeals to me - I think that a ‘forces of nature’ army should feel alien. Civilized folk anthropomorphize the forces of nature to make them easier to comprehend (and dryads sometimes take humanoid shapes to communicate or mess with people), but nature itself operates on a different logic. Having no face gets that across!
-
He is a BEAST!
Top job, mate.

Something different today! I needed a stone bridge to replace the wooden one I had previously made for my terrain boards. The problem was I couldn't find anything suitable to span the river, (its 6 inches wide) until I saw this one made by Debris of War.
Its a large piece but perfect for the job and fits perfectly. The only thing I had to do was add another course of stones to the centre column where it meets the river otherwise the model would appear to float in mid air. I made this from a piece of blue foam which I gave a thinned wash of filler which was sanded down when dry.
A simple paint job of grey primer followed by various washes, drybrushes and growies and its done.

Shame some of your more recent figure bases won’t fit over it >:D

Nice work.
Does it come with a Troll underneath it?

I agree...a troll peeking it's head up just above the water on the bridge would be aces.
BUT, this bridge is also fantastic with out it. Great job here!
-

In Hordes of the things the Troll could be a 'lurker' only revealed (whether
or not there) when someone tries to cross the bridge. ;)

I don’t think Malamute plays HOTT as IIRC his exquisite Fantasy game reports have been FOFL or DR.
I know I’ve commented already Nick, but I came back for a second look. The bridge, as I previously said, is very well done. But I also like what you’ve done with foliage, especially that in the water: it gives the impression of languid water, which suits the width of the river.

Thanks Steve,
As the river boards were originally conceived as a canal for some long forgotten project they are straight with no curves. I decided to reuse them but needed to break up the uniformity and straight lines, I thought adding some growies etc would do the job.
This is kind of what I was aiming at:

Very effective and seamless additions on the stonework too.

I shall have to seek out your help for when it comes to getting curvier...

We played Dragon Rampant yesterday resulting in my first victory for the Woodland Fae army against a human Empire army. Despite being outnumbered nearly two to one the Fae managed to hold their ground and destroyed or routed every human unit off the table :D
I didn't take many pics but here's a face off between a giant and a mighty Tree Ent.

Resurrecting (see what I did there?) my fantasy project with some skellies for a new Dragon Rampant army and FFOL retinue I am painting. I bought these in a boxed set (complete with cavalry and chariot) back in the 1990s and only just got around to painting them ;) lol
Still in my opinion some of the best skellies produced by GW and I think they still stand up well against other current designs.

Very nice work. Especially like the shields.

They're excellent, a great addition to your forces of the undead. The shields are superb, I can only.imagine how tricky that was to get right all those times. Excellent work.

Nice work on those old bones, Mama!
They certainly do well in the test of time as they still look the nuts.

You gonna build the chariot?
It would make a nice centrepiece.

Cor, those skellies take me back... They're rather beautifully done too. Looking forward to the chariot.
-
I can hear the Jason and the Argonauts music playing.
-
They are great skellies. I was looking at them thinking 'they look great, they've really got that old GW vibe, I think I need some of them', then read the post where you said they were old GW sculpts...
They're also beautifully painted.
And thanks for putting 'Page 26', not just the date. Much easier for navigation.
-
Excellent skeletons! The best ever made I think! Love the shields too!
-
Those skellies are excellent. I think painting the shields (rather than using the embellishments they came with) makes them less cartoony and much better for it. I've got a few sitting in my 'stuff to sell' box. I think I'll have to rescue them now.

If you want to sell them, I’m sure I can find a home for them. ;) lol

Another unit of old GW plastic Skellies for Dragon Rampant and a metal musician from diehard Miniatures. I’m really enjoying putting these together, the banner man has a converted lance, it’s so easy to convert plastics. :)

Lovely :)

So first off, fantastic thread! Love your work and painting, and the tables you play on are inspiring! I wish I had gamers like you in my area!
Secondly.....After reading all of the posts in 27 pages, I cannot believe no one commented on your giant, Bernard of Breslaw!
Almost wants me go and slay some hawks, or throw a glave around....wouldn't hit anything, wot with one eye. It crushes me no one noticed! I showed a friend and he gave me a weird look...I only arsked if he knew who he was....

Some more tree spirits for my Dragon Rampant Fae force. I needed cavalry so picked up more of the lovely Wealdgeist figures from Conquest Games.

Excellent job Nick - though I suspect they might flee a torch-bearing mob 😁

Very nice. :-* :-*

These are gorgeous! They’ve got a lovely creepy/whimsical feel to them :D

I'm part way through binging this thread and I'm loving it, so much to admire. I love those dwarf knights. To be honest I'm at a point where I find traditional Nordic-style dwarfs a bit old hat and slightly dull, especially when they are sculpted as little round egg shape things (Weebles wobble but they don't fall down), which really doesn't help. :)
-
Looking good!!

Another bunch of lovelly figures. :-* :-*
-
You're on fire...
They certainly will be lol
-
Lovely work! All looks incredible as per usual :D
-
More great figures! The bushes and other vegetation on the bases looks great, the figures seem to blend right in, which is exactly how dryads and other nature spirits should look, in my view.
The “bait and switch” tactic the dryad is using seems a bit mean spirited, though. I mean, some poor bloody infantry are out sent out in the wood on the king’s business, probably are a bit lonely, and then “oh, look, there’s a young lady, I wonder if she’s lost.” And next thing they know, they’re being mauled by forest beasts. That’s just not playing fair…
-
Nice, I really like the overgrown look of the bases!
-
Thanks chaps. I’m glad you like the bases, I wanted them to look like they are part of the forest, growing out of the undergrowth. They’re are really fun to do as well, good job I stocked up on lots of foliage :)
-
Tidy! Good job all round.
I really did enjoy painting my tree men. I think I need to get some of the other types from that range.

A 12 figure Sprite scout unit for my Dragon Rampant Fae army. Lovely sculpts from Conquest Games Myths of Albion Range.
I’m not entirely happy with the finished look I used Contrast paints which worked well for the Tree Spirits but i’m less content with how these turned out. Hopefully the forest basing hides them somewhat. lol

Lovely work. You're Fae army is really coming on.

Oh yeah. Going a bit more 'over the top' with the foliage on the bases than you might normally do really suits these figures and fits the theme nicely.

The basing is great, what are you using?
Are they all GW?

There are 21 plastic GW dryads, the rest are metal "leader" types mostly from Reaper Miniatures i think, these three:

A 3D printed Tree Spirit. I saw the pose and thought I wonder whether he would look good balanced on a log so went through my box of twigs and eventually found one suitable. I think it does the job.
The painting was a test as originally he was going to be a one off added to my Dragon Rampant command group, but I like the way he turned out and I have enough of these to do a six figure unit, lesser war beasts or scouts I think.
