Title: Union XX Corps HQ Flags in 1863?
Post by: Jemima Fawr on September 17, 2021, 09:24:41 AM
Does anyone have any info on the HQ flags carried by the first iteration of the Union XX Corps in 1863?

I've seen the photo of McCook and his Corps HQ staff with their HQ flag (showing an eagle with '20' on its breast).  I'd originally read that this flag was blue, but further reading would suggest that it was actually red (the near-identical flag of XIV Corps HQ being blue)?

What of the divisional HQ flags?  My assumption is that they matched the style of XIV Corps' divisional flags, with stars arranged vertically near the hoist, with the number of stars indicating the number of the division?  Red field?  Black or white stars?

All my books and almost all online sources just show the later single-star flags from the second iteration of XX Corps, adopted from the absorbed XII Corps.

Any assistance gratefully received.

Don't know about the flags. The western corps did not yet have corps badges, until they served alongside the XI and XII Corps troops from the AoP, if that's any help.

Cheers Vincent!  Yeah, I was looking at the time before XI & XII Corps went west to become the 'new' XX Corps, but thanks anyway. :)

Yeah, that's the fella. :)

There's a photo of him with his corps HQ flag:

lol

Anyway, I've decided to go with my hunch re flag design, as I always find that people are FAR more likely to give accurate information when they can tell you that you've got it wrong...  ;) :D
