Wow - what a great idea!

I think the challenge will be getting the interfaces to match up exactly so that all the different combinations work. But I guess if you use the first photo as your start point, that should be the defining arrangement to get the levels right...

Looking forward to seeing this develop  :)

the sides of Your 4 part hill seem to be steep cliff

how about some ramps to get up?
or some dislocated boulders to serve as stairs?
Title: Re: Mountain feature (planning stage)
Post by: former user on September 20, 2009, 01:59:07 PM
that's what I meant as an option

however, a spot where the cliff has broken away and sided down could also act as a "ramp"

no need to come uo with geomorphology

you asked for suggestions, I thought some variety would be interesting

good luck with Your project

I humbly apologize
I misinterpreted this statement of Yours

It could ...... but only if it were someone else's project.  As already mentioned, I don't like my terrain to have steep-ish ramps (I like my figures that are standing up straight to stand up straight).   ;)

and I never wanted to offend You
sorry

electronic communication is sometimes difficult ;)

gonna be cool gaming scenery o_o

You think it could warp? how? upwards?
Title: Re: Mountain feature (planning stage)
Post by: former user on October 07, 2009, 06:25:03 PM
I see
what could also work is glueing good drawing paper to the underside
this trick is done when posters are glued onto cardboard
the tension bends it back
if it bends downards....
Title: Re: Mountain feature (planning stage)
Post by: Hammers on October 08, 2009, 07:48:05 AM
... have been sprayed with sealant to discourage warping (though no idea as yet if that'll work or not)....

According to both my reference literature and my experience it should.
Title: Re: Mountain feature (planning stage)

I've used a lot of 5mm MDF to make baseboards for terrain and scenery items which I've then liberally covered in wet gloop, PVA, paint etc, and it has never ever warped on me.
It's probably the biggest advantage of MDF over any other kind of timber / fibre based sheet material.
(Well, that and its general convenient 'workability')  ;)

These will be big, but they will be impressive and as you have pointed out, the ability to combine them in different ways makes them very versatile.

Obviously, the cliffs could have been done with forest bark, which would have been quicker and cheaper,

Really? Where do you get your bark from? I couldn't get enough to do a mountain that size for £9.

Ah, the floor mulch stuff. You reckon that would work? I always thought it would probably be too regular due to the shapes and the gaps between them. I suppose you could combine it with the plaster bandages though to hide the edges. Might be worth a try as I still need to make some big cliffs for a board edge.

Gotta love that Hornby product page. £2.25 for Medium Cork Bark, what the hell is medium cork bark? I can accept Medium as a size given for t-shirts but not for modelling materials!

@B
My wife laughed when she read your question.  It is something of a joke in our house that should it suffer some sort of disaster then all that would be left would be my 'projects'.

I get the idea   :D -

reminds me of a similar joke about my father, who used to fasten everything to walls with screws double the size required. My mother used to say that if we ever got bombed, the shelves, lamps and paintings would be everything remaining upright cause they supported the walls ....

Wow, those look great finished!

I admit to doubts at some of your WiP shots - I was thinking the pieces would turn out to look really "game-y", but painted and finished they look far more realistic than I thought they would, and obviously still playable!

The flexiblity appeals too, and I have to second a comment on the other thread - put them closer together to create a gorge, and built a rope-bridge to span the gap!
Title: Re: Mountain feature (FINISHED)
Post by: former user on October 25, 2009, 11:50:25 AM
yess, exactly, Indy!!

Well, a rope bridge is a rather minor addition that can be done without the rest, or not.

but this raised table - that's the thing of course!

I already see a train falling into a ravine after the bridge exploded  :D

SI - I'm slightly ashamed to confess I had my doubts about quite how your method was going to turn out from the early phases of the work. But now it's finished, I have to salute your ingenuity. That is a damned cunning way to construct an iconic (and very flexible) lump of rocky terrain, and the end result looks darned good. All just goes to show there's more than one way to skin a cat (how many of us have cats by the way, I've often wondered?)

 ;)

Well done you. I might try a little something similar myself :)

 lol

It's presently being fixed to four 30cm sq tiles with added rockfalls and other detailing prior to being winterised for my post apoc and medieval 'snow bound' games.

It's not too heavy though with the extra Mdf tile and the gravel it is going to be heavier.  I've never dropped it but I imagine it'd chip rather than fracture.
