Well I have allowed myself to slip into yet another side project, this time drawn by the lovely 40mm Perry Napoleonics for the Peninsular, first figures are 60th rifles, write up and images on my blog for anyone interested. I will keep you updated with progress

A fine start Roger 8)
-
they are tempting, aren't they?
Good start.
-
Cheers yes, tempting indeed. I have a plan, lets see if I can stick to it.
-
Lovely figures, like your choice of Unit.
Paul
-
Cheers Paul, 95th felt a bit too obvious and 60th has a splash of colour.
I may try some French and Spanish next.
-
Nice :)
-
Very nice. Welcome to the world of 40mm.
-
Thanks guys
-
Only another 1000 to go 😉
-
Haha, no I am doing Sharp Practice so probably anoher 70 or 80 to do. Still I try not to think about it.....
-
Lovely brushwork.
-
Cheers Helen, I am expecting a bunch of French tomorrow so watch out for a few in the near future.
-
Great start….looking forward to seeing more.
If I had the space to store 49mm buildings, I’d be very tempted, unfortunately 28:mm is my limit!
-
I can relate to that, my chum has a small number of oversized buildings, I have yet to decide how far to take that part of the project.
-
Great start….looking forward to seeing more.

Hey Digits! Howz about we scrap all that 28mm Brigades stuff,
& do 40mm Peninsular Skirmish? Then you'd have space. lol lol lol
-

Nice. :P
-
Good work Roger.
-
Thanks chaps.
-
Nice painting style, reminds me of the watercolours by Mike Chappel for some reason.
-
Thanks for that, much appreciated. More on the way, finally gettign around to basing a few too.
-
New march poses look good. A hundred British Line Infantry - that will keep you busy for a 'side project'. Perry models as well?
-
The British are a mix I picked up forom ebay after I had ordered 30 from Perry, y thinking about it might be nearer 80 line, 20 Sash and Sabre and 60 Perry but with 40 plus skirmishers too.
-
Bit more progress, started to get troops done for the formations, mainly French Grenadiers and Spanish this time, more images on the blog.

That’s how it starts Roger - with four - then … 🙀
-
Aaaaagggghhhh... Lol, they look great Ian, I am goign to stick at 32 Spanish......then again
-
and then there is the terrain....
Still not found those other ones I thought I had.
Cheers
Tony

-
Looking good Roger, especially like the sergeant leader
-
Great work, tempted to get a few myself for a Silver Bayonet warband
-
Cheers, I can see this workign for Silver Bullet. Sash and Sabre do 40mm Wolves of whih I have a pack I might be pursauded to part with.
-
Are the 60th the ‘Loyal Americans’?
-
They are yes, that said I doubt there were many, if any Americans in their ranks, mainly Germans as I understand it. Somethign of a foreign legion. Nice to ahve as they served in seperate detatched comapnies all over the place so good units for skirmish scenarios.
-
You need to make a sweet William character next Roger
-
Ian my painting skills are fine but my modellign skills are none existing so that might be a difficult one.
-
The regiment Hibernia complete, really enjoyed these, lots more pictures on the blog here https://gapagnw.blogspot.com/2022/02/40mm-spanish-regiment-hibernia-complete.html

Great work Roger. Your speed of completion is impressive.
-
Impressive blog uodate as always,
-
Thanks, nice to get some French over the line, just need same number again before I can get a small game in.
-
Very nice looking buildings on the blog that your mate Chris donated to the project. See what you mean about too big for 28mm and just perfect for your 40mm models.
-
Cheers very much, will stick a link and a photo on shortly.
-
No Photo sorry still struggling to post any pictures, however here is a link to my latest blog post with some terrain for the 40mm project.
https://gapagnw.blogspot.com/2022/03/spanish-buildings-for-40mm-peninsular.html
-
Nice thread. :-* :-*
Will follow with interest.
-
lovely model buildings on the blog.
-
Cheers guys, lucky to have good friends.
-
My latest update on the blog covers the Guerillas and rebasing of the skirmishers for the 4mm project, lots of pictures here : https://gapagnw.blogspot.com/2022/04/first-40mm-spanish-guerillas-based-and.html
-
Nice work.
-
The only stopping me go 40mm is the extra terrain needed but seeing these figures - maybe it'd be worth it
-
Thanks Kikuchiyo. I terrain is resolvable, I am happy I have enough trees and buildings that look right, of course doing it in Sharp Practice means I am not really looking to fill much more than a 4 x 4 table.
-
Great progress Roger.
-
Thanks Kikuchiyo. I terrain is resolvable, I am happy I have enough trees and buildings that look right, of course doing it in Sharp Practice means I am not really looking to fill much more than a 4 x 4 table.
I've been wondering about SP table size - theres seems to be a push for 8X6 but does it work ok on a 4X4
with range and movement?
-
4 x 4 is plenty for a 2-3 hour evening game, bigger than that I dont see getting a result. I have played on a 6 x 6 with 3.5 hours for the game and 2 players a side, we need at least another hour or so to get any sort of conclusion.
If you think that movement is typically two D6 and you cant move if your firing or re-loading its going to take 3 or 4 moves to get into action even on a 4 x 4. At long range after the first volley firing is typically very ineffective so you need to get reasonably close. 4 x 4 or 4 x 6 are ideal table sizes for me.
-
I should add of course that this is all based on experience with Peninsular and AWI if you are player later with lots of rifles, breech loaders and or cavalry then things do start to change.
-
Thanks
Peninsular is the period I'm interested in
I'm also thinking about a 20mm scale travel option too...
-
Then I think it will work pefectly on 4 x 4. Using 20mm you always have the option to go even smaller and exchange inches for CMs if you prefer.
-
planning to try silver bayonet in 20-18mm too so that's handy to know
-
Back to painting after a little trouble, 40mm French Ligne at last underway, write up and pictures on my blog:

https://gapagnw.blogspot.com/2022/05/workbench-update-more-40mm-peninsular.html
-
First of my 40mm French Legere and French ligne based and ready for the table.
https://gapagnw.blogspot.com/2022/06/french-40mm-ligne-and-legere-completed.html
-
Look excellent, especially the mounted officer
-
Cheers Brunei35 first 40mm game report just getting loaded.
-
Lovely work there, on those Frenchies!
-
Cheers Capn Jim.
So I finally have just enough figures for a small Peninsular game with my 40mm collection.
British officers and Guerillas held in the centre of the table in a villa by a skirmish unit of French Legere. A unit of Guerillas, three units of rifles and a formation of 4 groups of Spanish march tot he rescue whilst five groups of French and 2 groups of Voltigeurs march to stop them.
Great fund, especially as both sides forgot their mission and wondered off, full write up with lots of pictures on the blog here: https://gapagnw.blogspot.com/2022/06/first-40mm-peninsular-sharp-practice.html
-
Great looking game, and great report! Well done!
-

the 40mm's are the bee-knees for this kind of game.
-
Enjoyable report with some excellent pictures. Thanks for posting
Cheers
-
Much appreciated loved getting these figures on table.

A bunch more 40mm Figures painted and based, lots of pictures on the blog here: https://gapagnw.blogspot.com/

Excellent conversions of the Perry British models and the French / RCW look good as well
Cheers
-
Thanks very much, just a couple more of the British Light Dragoons and I will have a unit on table.
-
Some more figures completed for this project including a couple of brand new units for you, Paris Municipal Guard and Portuguese! Lots of pictures on the blog here:
https://gapagnw.blogspot.com/2022/09/workbench-update-40mm-cavalry-and-new.html
-
Nice miniatures. :-*
And the portuguese caçadore is great.
Here is a picture as a guide for your painting.
And the material that the uniforms where made varied a lot (it was and still is made by hand and the brown depended on the pigment quantity).
-
Thanks Rumacara this is really useful, already started a bugler with a tone nearer to this so really helpful to have that.
-
Thought I would share the progress with a workbench update from the 40mm Peninsular Project, new figures and more cavalry to share, lots of pictures here: https://gapagnw.blogspot.com/2022/09/august-holiday-workbench.html
-
great stuff.

-
As always great work, & I didn't even know Irregular Miniatures did 40mm livestock.
-
Officially labelled 42mm the goats and pack horse are nice. Sheep awful, the cart bullocks are ok.
-
I'll have to give them a look.
-
More additions for 40mm Peninsular Project
I think the cattle came out well. https://gapagnw.blogspot.com/2023/04/40mm-french-skirmishers-livestock.html
-
fine looking herd of critters.
-
Its always impressive to see units of 40mm figures, and they look great.
I really like your building, and the critters too :)
-
Cheers Gents, 4 more cattle to do making a nice wee herd, then need to find some sheep
-
First of the British Light infantry done, lots of pictures here. https://gapagnw.blogspot.com/2023/05/40mm-british-light-infantry-skirmishers.html
-
Nice.
-
Some Spanish artillery painted to add to the project, basing still WIP. https://gapagnw.blogspot.com/2023/05/another-eclectic-workbench.html
-
After a significant break working on Elizabethan Ireland I am back on with my 40mm Peninsular project. Latest figures coming off the workbench are mainly Spanish including some lovely mounted officers, lots of pcitures here: https://gapagnw.blogspot.com/2023/12/40mm-workbench.html
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsFczglVOlnV86vf5O5RrHPVVpe4fzQCyna6yo3-JtURBI5_FbuWtaudTdmVDEqFm_ur9c1YzLZykzZN3yyacMtq_mRTFCErjniRChlJwXy3HjN-9SgNcW9bKha878WQaqtjp8sD71YsBTIOfzowad3tYQk4_DH_x3t9gKi5rfHNZeclbL8kjxsRivDbU/s3160/IMG_4734.jpeg)
-
Very nice, no surprise there, &I am glad you are still enjoying it.
-
Thanks veyr much.
-
Great work! It seems the side project is developing into a main one :-*
-
Iy has taken over my life Traveller! Slight exaggeration but it has certainly moved well on from a side project, it is far too big for Sharp Practice now and I am looking at rules that cover 4-6 battalions a side rather than a company or two per side.
-

I know the feeling :) I started a small TYW skirmish project that is rapidly growing to regiments ;)
-
A few more 40mm completed for the Peninsular project, mainly Spanish with some 3d printed Hessians, photos etc on the blog here https://gapagnw.blogspot.com/2023/12/more-40s-from-workbench.html
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTzm5m4b0UjDA5nFqTTqXXlpJM3NN-ZwxQFJYqC_3EF1o5LrTy3WkSQRFzuNMJdNE-mn5kPHa6zcND9uG7s3E8FqJ_5ll7eN4VyH8uY9r48FeKPeK6Riv_0CjqwXqWXkEw9Txg0EUi9Hu1Ck6YiGJWO7iM82DvYmRIxx9CK36q-NNKW7crXEAXfgC_4hc/s3991/IMG_4911.jpeg)
-
good stuff.
I'm most definitely 'size-ist', but can't really see the NCO is larger oddly enough.
-
Thats good news bloggard. I think if I mixed the larger and smaller on a base it would look odd, but using the larger ones as leaders on separate bases seems to work just fine. I do now though have a box of oversized 40mm Hessians that I cant use and cant bare to throw away just yet.
-
This is really coming along Roger. Really great work.
-
Cheers Alan, few more to share but slow progress just now. Hopefully back into the swing properly in Feb.
-
They look great. I really like that friar with the musket!
-
Cheers Capn Jim, I probably have a few too many of the friars.
-
Playtested some rules for larger games with the 40mm, not a great success but an opportunity to get pretty much everything on table. Report and lots of pictures here. https://gapagnw.blogspot.com/2023/12/playtest-victrix-napoleonic-rules-with.html
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiH5hWLn3CV4HgRuc4Dqpr5RXWz4mc2B8sgjJ-j-eRYHnbbvQmCW3mZBHbwVOFbJxSn8OtHtSfVyvSkGaG3j2y2WjEYpBfEVJPgI0P12nU8aE6jz7av2F8P1BfkyEbI2qOlVyKGbH68fXgMxc9WxuCkBbTy98Ehyt5AGCE_wNR51yfZtW6DAYwmue0tLhA/s3136/IMG_4675.jpeg)
-
can't comment re: the rules side of things, but great to see the 40mm collection out on the table-top.
looks lovely in your blog-post.
-
I also can't comment on the rules, but the game looks great.
Loving the cows, Irregular? I have ordered some for myself.
-
Cheers guys.
Has.been two of the cows are irregular the rest are 3d prints from ebay, just got some more ever s slightly bigger which I think are a better fit. The irregular ones are ok, the pack pony is probably the best of the useful bits.
-
Thanks for that Rogerc. I don't have access to 3d printing, so will settle for Irregular for the moment.
Hoping to scratch my 40mm itch this year with ACW skirmish. That might be as far as it goes, who knows.
-
Fantastic figures and game table, wonderful! Have you tried "Valour and Fortitude" from the Perry?
-
Hi Juan, I havent tried valour and fortitude no, I assumed they were aimed at Divisions/Corps like most rules. My 5 battalions a side max would probably not be a good fit. That said if you think it might be a good fit happy to give it a try.
has.been the 3d prints are pre-printed, I dont have a printer either your just getting good quality resin instead of metal. Much nicer sculpts. have a look at this one: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/386176453810?hash=item59e9e90cb2:g:iRgAAOSwYe1lIXgM&amdata=enc%3AAQAIAAAA4IcEFLlv6M%2BGdNOwGF2DHsdX8wgRA8Krr5PTgL0rhtBbY5MVXF2AYiyEZH6TypoD9cL3sJuNGg%2FoZ2cRzt9jtn11Gp93Ow0FU39ubjApXYUbt97mYe3HIryDOiPZbVw%2FEWFCMJlAOHCjfWI42n3VUjBJCE%2FBtzGbD5ALl8sbDKYK3VFL6gGZwGMIIX%2Fn6WhqEmQs5uVWjwJK8MsMgN0vw0j9gaFNpbEl2Hwz%2BI213W8nubK0ifcDZhNhC2kpWJ6xRJbm%2F3L4497OrWaIbX83vQL%2BeKp1aCapx70vSnGPPabs%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR8z156OZYw
-
Thanks, I'll take a look at those.
-
The ones on table are a different 1/48 set which are nice, these ones I have but yet to paint, slightly bigger and more robust than the others. There are also pre-painted 0 gauge cattle for railways that might be a good fit. I just prefer to paint my own.
-
I will share an image when these eventually get painted.
-
I look forward to that.
-
Another option I have just found, get an stl file and have it printed, I use Sabotag3d who printed lovely 40mm figures from Piano wargames, they have a file of cattle here https://pianowargames.de/products/cows-stl
wish I had found them sooner.
-
never done the 'getting someone to print' thing.
It is the way to go though.
And to think I used to think of Star Trek's replicators as, well, fiction. lol

Well I admit it blagged my head for a while but there are plenty of small businesses out there that cater specifically to our hobby.
I used Paul at Sabotag3d and find him great. Buy the file, email to printer, get a quote for how many you want and off you go. As I was changing the scale from 28mm to 40mm we needed to print some samples to get the scale to match Perry's and check the quality was good but end result is brill.
Cost wise its been pretty good, cheaper than metal if you use the file more than once as I have with the Hessians(file with 6 marching printed 6 times to give me 36 marching figures, cost of file is paid once and split over the 36) figures printed , and if I had spotted them sooner I would have bought the STL file for these Piano Miniature cows and had them printed too.

Impressive as ever as is the new photo shoot setup :)
-
THANKS VERY MUCH
-
Great to see another 40mm collector, lovely collection, like the Spanish. In terms of gaming have you tried "Charge" by Brig Peter Young, also there is an older set for Napoleonic's called Playable Napoleonic rules - features a nice game - 5/6 battalions per side, few squadrons of cavalry and some artillery.
Look forward to seeing more of your collection.
Paul
-
Thanks for the Schoey will have a look at those.
-
So I've finally succumbed and have some riflemen on their way
-
Good for you, are you going 95th or 60th?
-
I've modelled both in everything from 6 to 28 so far so I'd imagine I'll end up with some of each
-
Enjoy!
-
I'm sure I will I'm going to start with enough models to run A Song of Drums and Shakos but if that works out I'll see if I can stretch to Sharp Practice
My main tumbling point will be terrain
I'm hoping 28mm stuff will be an ok fit?
-

Have you considered paying someone to scratch-build it?
If you are UK based I (& no doubt others) could be interested.

Tight budgets would suggest that's unlikely

lol lol lol
You never know. One building each couple of months would yield a village within a year.
If you are interested then PM me.

I have been looking at the games on your blog, very interesting indeed. What are the base sizes you use for 4 foot figures. not sure if I go for 4 or 6 to a base?
Paul
-
Four foot on 40mm front and 50mm depth, lots of room on the bases surprisingly. Skirmishers in pairs on 40mm round base.

Certainly larger 28mm buildings will look fine. I have a few and are all billed as 28mm but look the part at 40mm.

Thankyou

How small do you go for single figures, I'm thinking 25mm MDF would look right but does the weight play an issue when chosing base size?
-
weight might play a part, remember they are taller so a bit top heavy, ,my singles are on 2p sized washers. Not got one handy to measure but that works fine for me.
-
Thanks, I'm going to try 25mm mdf for singles and 40mm for pairs

I meant to ask before who makes these guys?
-
These are Piano Wargames STL files 28mm figures I had blown up to 40mm. Lovely figures. There is quite a bit about them on my blog.
-
Lovely figures, how many of these do you plan to have in a battalion?
Looks like they would suit other German allies in Spain.

Very cool, not obvious from the site, do you own the files and get them printed or buy them?
-
Schoey, I have 40 of these painted now, need to sort the companies, paint pom poms and base them. I may also at some point add some skirmishers.
Kikuchiyo, i bought the files then sourced someone who could print them at the right size (I use Paul at Sabotag3d), took a couple of attempts to them to a size I felt fit (I actually have a box full of figures that are a bit too large I cant use from getting it wrong first time around) I have also bought an STL File for a pack of French mounted officers and had this printed but yet to paint them. I may also add some more French line at some point.
-
Be interesting to see when all complete, that will be a good size unit.
Paul
-
I am trying to get all my units to 40 figures, far too big for Sharp Practice of course but I am well down the rabbit hole now.

But what a wonderful Rabbit Hole it is. :)
-
I know what you mean Roger, I originally started 40mm for small skirmish, but has massively grown, looking at similar size units my self.
Paul
-
Baby steps for me
I'll start with Drums and Shakos and see where the project goes
-
Its the best way. to be fair I ended up being sucked in when presented with offers I couldnt say no to, not unhappy to be getting out of control, just need to stop it goign much further Lol.
-
Interesting approach to 40mm, I also started with the idea of skirmish level, good scale for it, but wanted more than a skirmish but not a full blown battle. More of a collector than a gamer, but wanted some games with 3-5 battalions per side, some units (squadrons) of cavalry plus some artillery. At the moment I am favouring "Charge" an older set of rules, battalions can be between 40 -60 figures, but three or four battalions is achievable I think. , cavalry in 9 figure squadrons and artillery with 6 crew to each gun. The look and feel is good, but it can be difficult to not expand, currently thinking of an 18 figure company "6th Confederation of the Rhine" to escort my baggage train!!!!!

Since you've been collecting for a while do you know if Sah and Sabre are adding to their range any more,I'd really like some light infantry skirmish troops but I think the Perry figures feel a bit static
-
An email from Chris answered my question British light infantry skirmishers are on the to do list
-
Ah great, have you seen the Portuguese by Flashing blade? I do like their Cazadores.
-
I have, I was even tempted to try my hand as converting the musket carrying ones into light infantry but wondered how well they fitted with the sash and sabre stuff
-
I will get a picture for you at some point, I only have the skirmishers, they are very nice, chunkier and bigger than S&S from memory but will get you a picture if I think on.
-
Thanks
I'd only be after info on the skirmishers
-
Has anyone seen the new Portuguese line in the lead? If so how do they compare to Perries and Sash and sabre?

I have a picture, struggling to add it, usually I copy it from the blog this is from a jpeg.

OK this should work, lovely figures the firing figure on the right is taller because there is material on the temporary base, but they are a little chunkier.
Love the officer.

Nice figures.
-
Very nice indeed thanks for the line up
-
Cheers, should have said the end two Portuguese are of course not painted yet Lol, only ones I had though as yet to make a start on these guys.
-
Interesting photo, the firing chap is a chunky fellow. The officer is wonderful, the sergeants are looking good. Thanks for sharing.
Paul

Some more progress with the Spanish and Hessians, the flags in particular are very nice indeed, although I can claim no credit at all for these,

Excellent flags (like the detail of cords & ribbons) and figures.
Paul

Very nice
Just wondering if you have any of the French sash and sabre command packs, I'm curious what the post of the officer and nco's are like
-
Just the NCO pack for the French, two NCO's, not got around to paintign them yet but they look nice.

Excellent looking Hessians, things are coming together, like the sapper. How many figures will you have in this battalion?
Paul
-
Planning to have most units at 40. Pretty much there with the Hessians now.
