I've just finished reading this new book by Simon Elliott covering the incomplete Roman invasion of Britain and its occupation through to the 5th century AD.

of maps is a glaring error.

Yes it is perhaps the most irritating aspect of the literature that supports our historical reading, perhaps only matched by the lack of an index, which I’ve noticed creeping into the odd work here and there.

To be fair to Simon Elliott and other authors, particularly those who have dropped me a line about this issue, they often are unaware of the omission until publication which makes me think that the assumption was made with the publisher that the text would be supported with these key inclusions.

However what amazed me was that a work of this nature would not have had at least one basic map.

That said I wouldn’t want to put potential readers off what I found to be a good read and with maps available on line can at least be overcome with a bit of effort.

Nice writeup.

The illustration you said reminded you of the children's magazine illustrations reminded me of those in the book 'Hadrian's Wall in the days of the Romans' by Ronald Embleton & Frank Graham.  Wonder if it's in there?

Hi MG and thank you.

I visited the wall with my wife to be, back in the mid eighties, and picked up a packet of all the postcards plus a little guide book with all those Embleton pictures in and I have it still, as a treasured momento of our visit.

It’s not one of them, and not to that standard, but has a similar style as the Embleton set has a kneeling Brit dragged before a legate for a bit of gentle interrogation.
