Title: GumbaFish's KOW Halfling log- 10/11/2021 Converted poachers
Post by: GumbaFish on October 12, 2021, 01:13:03 AM
With the release of the new Halfling faction, and discovering there is a good Kings of War community in the city I just moved to, I decided to build my first ever Kings of War army. I grew up playing Warhammer Fantasy but haven't played a game with square bases in almost 20 years. I am a huge fan of some of the excellent kitbashed armies on this forum and always wanted to grab a bunch of kits to make an army but never had an excuse...until now.

Getting started I converted up some halfling poachers. There isn't a proper kit out for these guys so I used a combination of the Mantic halflings, Oathmark human infantry, various Frostgrave kits and some other random stuff to cobble this unit together. I wanted them to stand out visually from the rest of the army so I had my first go at making capes. I think there is some room for improvement but for a first attempt I am happy.

First post rambling over, onto the conversions.

Next up, assembling and converting some humble halfling braves.

I think the capes will look good once painted up. Everything is a little rough to look at in the "putting it together" stage. Paint fixes 90% of everything that doesn't look right unpainted, in my experience.

What did you use for the capes? Not familiar with the look of the substance.

Oh, since you seem to have access to both Mantic Halflings and Frostgrave/Oathmark humans, could I trouble you for a scale shot comparing them?

I'm very interested in the Mantic halflings, but the scale shots with other ranges make me worried that they'd be "wholelings" next to all my Frostgrave infantry.

Thanks all!

@CookAndrewB The capes are actually made of worbla, which I have never seen anyone use for miniatures like this before. My wife watches a lot of doll crafting videos and I got the idea from them. It is a thermoplastic that you can heat with a hair dryer or heat gun and had a smooth side and a slightly textured side. I went with the textured side facing outwards because I was hoping it might make them look like wool capes but I guess I will see how that looks once they are primed and painted.

@Psychopomp Asked and answered! I took some shots with random kits I had around to give you an idea. I would say they are like three-quarterlings compared to the Frostgrave/Oathmark figures. The scale is definitely a little confusing since the Mantic halfling heads are quite proportionally large, and sometimes quite a bit larger than any of the heads for the other kits in the photo. If you want me to mock some up with heads & limbs let me know, I have some painted Frostgrave figures I could snap a picture of with my assembled halflings.

Some very nice models here GumbaFish, but in particular I wanted to drop by and say "thank you" for the Mantic Halfling comparison - super useful, and it confirms my suspicion that they are in fact quite large.

Looking forward to seeing how these all look with some paint!  8)

That is some saintly work right there!  The measurement chart background is far more than I'd hoped for!

Once you have some standard halflings assembled in your progress, a fully assembled comparison would also be helpful.  But there's no need to go to the trouble of mocking up some.  I just wanted to make sure that the Mantic halfing bodies weren't as tall as Frostgrave soldiers', as Mantic has only shown comparison against their own models...somehow missing any Mantic models I actually own.

...

Yes, look more like threequarterlings
