Sounds like a good couple of games. Your luck with "Guard Dogs" (which I've been using spiders for myself, oddly enough) is about on par with mine, never seen one stay alive a whole game yet.
Have you got Quarantine 37 yet? Adds a bunch of new soldier types that open up your crew building options quite a bit.

Be dangerous with a lucky role. I had the spiders from Frostgrave and felt they gave a good sic-fy pet feel.
