Title: The Battle of Grocka/Krotska 1739?
Post by: Jemima Fawr on October 20, 2021, 09:26:57 PM
Might anyone in this esteemed company have an order of battle, decent map or even a worked up scenario for the above-named battle between the Ottomans and Austrians?

All I can find is this document, but it's frustratingly baffling: https://militarymaps.rct.uk/russo-turkish-wars/battle-of-krotska-1739-plan-of-the-battle-of-krotska-in-the

Jemima, I just picked this book up yesterday at the Cincycon game convention. Haven't read it yet. There are no maps. There is several pages worth of a blow-by-blow account of Grotzka, from the Austrian perspective. Might be of interest. I'll get back with you after the con is over.

Cheers Zips! :) I'd very much appreciate a review and any Imperial orbat information would be a definite bonus.   :D

Just got back from the con, too beat to do much tonight. The Crawford map you linked to is better than anything I have. It includes OBs for the Austrian army. What more are you looking for?

This article includes what I suppose is a summary of Crawford's account of Grozcka. I'd like to see a full copy of his manuscript.

Cheers Zips!  I've been working through the Crawford diagram, but it's hard work decoding the handwriting and working out which regiments were Austrian and which were allied contingents, so I was hoping that someone might have already done the work!  :) The orbat also doesn't seem to reflect the actual order of battle on the day, where virtually all the cavalry was massed into an advance guard.  I was also hoping that someone might have found some information on the rough composition of the Ottoman force.

You might find more details here -
https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=cF5dAAAAcAAJ&pg=PA28&lpg=PA28&dq=Memoirs+of+the+life+of+James+Lindesay,+Earl+of+Craufurd+and+Lindesay.&source=bl&ots=HEq9Z43cIx&sig=ACfU3U3s4Fai8g_JdSoa4KqOK5jt89rVIw&hl=en&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjp0YH90OLzAhVD8OAKHeydAqQQ6AF6BAgNEAI#v=onepage&q&f=false

The map has been folded while the book was digitized, but the text may give more info. It starts on p159.

There were 4 Bavarian battalions, 8 Bavarian guns, 1rgt of Bavarian dragoons, and 4coys of Bavarian grenadiers which joined as auxiliaries.

The sketch linked to above shows Preysing which was a Bavarian infantry rgt. It's possible the units above served in the same section of the line together, with cavalry also being brigaded together with Austrian units. There is a Bavarian unit amongst them, possibly cuirassiers.

My 18th century Austria-Turkish war set up was based on the siege of Banjaluka, so I may be able to help. Will check the files and see what I have, though it will be sketchy and quite possibly from secondary sources.

OK, I have about 10 files of information that might be of use. If you PM me with an email address, I'll send them out.

Cheers Emir!  That's a great find!   :-*  Yes, I'd found some Bavarian units in the Crauford diagram, but not all of them, so that's very useful information indeed.
