Title: New rules set
Post by: craigjonwoodfield on October 24, 2021, 08:26:21 PM
Haven't seen this posted here yet. From The History and Games Lab FB page.

Looking forward to this.

Introducing an upcoming expansion to the popular The Men Who Would Be Kings colonial wargaming ruleset by Dan Mersey, entitled THE LAST SAMURAI REBELLION.
The first two gaming outputs of the History and Games Lab were medieval ones, and we are planning more medieval goodness.
But we are also expanding in other directions too, thanks to projects developed by students and alumni of the University of Edinburgh in collaboration with Dan Mersey, who is our first Game Designer in Residence thanks to a Knowledge Exchange Fellowship offered by the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Edinburgh.
THE LAST SAMURAI REBELLION, focuses on the Seinan War of 1877, also known as Satsuma Rebellion, which, as the title states, marked Japan’s last Samurai uprising. The Men who Would be Kings ruleset will be expanded to appropriately reflect this fascinating period of history, with new units, leadership traits, special rules, and scenarios!
The author of the new expansion is Eric Wood, who gamified his undergraduate dissertation.
Apart from Eric, the images attached to this post include woodblock prints and vignettes by Tsukioka Yoshimoto (1839-1892) depicting fighting around Kumamoto Castle, which will be represented in the scenarios.
Lieutenant of artillery, Takehiko Idesishi, describes the fierce fighting for the castle as follows:
“The enemy intended to kick open the way through Kumamoto Castle with one blow, so a fierce attack was made…when the enemy came within firing range, each gun battery began to fire…the sound of gunfire became brisk in every direction. Its reverberations were like a thousand claps of thunder…”
We will have more posts on this project, and do get in touch if you have questions.

I noticed this was coming out on another thread. Really looking forward to it and the level of detail it sounds like it will go into will be excellent from a gaming perspective.

There was a small thread on these rules on the Colonial forum (I guess due to using TMWWBK as the base)
