Over the last few months, I've been working on my own version of Tolkien's Glaurung. Using a Schleich plastic toy as a base and Tolkien's illustration as a guide, I've managed to come with something that I'm happy with. Within a few hours of the paint being dry, he led my Orc host into battle in his first game and got taken down by Elven archery in Turn 4! There's a full description and plenty more pictures on the blog, but here's a few highlights, including Tolkien's illustration.

A great result - and as is the way with a newly painted unit, it seems to attract the enemy arrows and swords!
Also well done in seeing past the very odd original paint job to recognise the potential of the model.

Looks great 8)

Great conversion

Looks much better without those wings. Also, a nice job making the gold work on a creature - I always found this to be very tricky.

Excellent work - and a very convincing Glaurung. The colour scheme is great.

Fantastic! He really looks the part!

Lovely stuff, he's a beaut.

Great job, the starting model is unrecognizable in the end product - even the tail is much better now.
Lovely model 8)

I always like seeing toys and other things converted into miniatures and you did an amazing job.
Like others have said, you've managed to make gold look great on a creature. Excellent! :-*

Okay I admit it, saw the first picture, thought, I don't remember that illustration.. then I woke up a bit and realized its not the illustration. lol
Very nice conversion, hopefully in future battles he lasts a bit longer on the field.
and yes, when I got to the actual illustration, that I remember :D
Those toys do make for some nice conversion fodder, and your PJ and re-modelling does it far more justice than its original colors.

Wonderful take on Tolkien's illustration.
... in his first game and got taken down by Elven archery in Turn 4!
Of course he did... ::) lol

Great work James, excellent conversion and paint job.
I hope you kept the wings...never know when those will come in handy :)
