Title: ChargeDog's Adventures in the ChargeReal
Post by: ChargeDog on October 28, 2021, 06:37:01 PM
So my old thread was getting a little long in the tooth and so infrequently update it was basically on life support. In addition, the places in it's title didn't really exist any more as I've changed my gaming focus elsewhere in the Ultramodern setting. Based on this, it's time for a new thread (and hopefully one I'll actually keep updated this time).

For anyone who hasn't seen my stuff before, I try and cover lots of things all around the Ultramodern setting for wargaming. To fit all this stuff into, I'm in the process of creating an alternative universe setting that takes the modern world and tweaks it slightly to create a selection of interesting settings and situations to play off. This isn't just a simple bit of theory crafting - every game I play in it will affect part of the ongoing story of it.

Aside from that, I also have a chunk of battle reports, impressions pieces and more around my time in wargaming. But enough sales work, back to the minis.

One advantage of this imagination setting is that I get to play around with kit that isn't usually seen on most battlefields outside of weird and wonderful situations. While looking for a new tank for the Royal Bazi Army, I came upon Guaro3d's fantastic models on his Cults 3d page (https://cults3d.com/en/users/guaro3d/creations). Previously I've printed his Bushmaster and VBL but only just decided to try out some of his larger vehicles in my 3d printer.

As you can see, it came out pretty well. It's not perfect (the turret is currently being reprinted and I need to stand down some of the diagonal lines on the side armour) but it's more than good enough to be a focus point of a skirmish game. It will probably spend more time as an objective than specifically a unit but I am tempted to print two more and get a full platoon together.

I talked about some of the printing on short update post from yesterday (available on my blog at https://www.hntdaab.co.uk/blog/2021/10/27/sitrep-thats-a-big-tank/ (https://www.hntdaab.co.uk/blog/2021/10/27/sitrep-thats-a-big-tank/)) but I'm really excited at the possibilities this has unlocked. Having some strange vehicles to make my forces more than just "Iraqi/US Army with a funny name" really adds to the situation.

Welcome back.

That tank looks good, interesting read about the printing.

Thanks! Feels good to be back.

Two little updates.

The first is I've finally written up an impressions piece on the Spectre Covert/Overt figures. Took a little longer than planned but now it's here. Some interesting pieces to put on the table top. It's on the blog at https://www.hntdaab.co.uk/blog/2021/11/06/impressions-spectres-covert-overt-figures/ (https://www.hntdaab.co.uk/blog/2021/11/06/impressions-spectres-covert-overt-figures/)

The second is I've set up a Patreon  (https://www.patreon.com/ChargeBlog)to act as a little tip jar, if people like the stuff I write. To provide a little bonus, I'm going to be giving away the scenario files that I write up when running an Ultramodern game. There are quite a few old ones that are sat unusued so why not provide some inspiration as well as an entertaining battle report. To setup the template, I'm reusing one of my favourite scenarios "Training Day" that I played back in 2018 with a convoy of Humvees being ambushed (you can find it on the blog here (https://www.hntdaab.co.uk/blog/2018/09/14/battle-report-training-day-skirmish-sangin/)).

There is some update work and I'm tying it into the ChargeReal setting. This first one will be free, but going forward they will just be available to Patrons (or until I decide to release them).

A new update and a free scenario file!

I've just put up a free scenario for Skirmish Sangin and Spectre Operations for anyone to download. An update of the classic battle report Training Day from my blog (first played in 2018), this updated version has two versions for the different games as well as full briefings for each of the players involved.

If you want to get your hands on it, it's on my patreon at https://www.patreon.com/posts/scenario-release-58618048 (https://www.patreon.com/posts/scenario-release-58618048). Future scenario releases will be just for Patrons (for a little while) and there is another one coming this month, along with a battle report.

New post day! First time in a long time, I'm taking a look at a new ruleset - Black Powder Red Earth 28mm. Managed to write out a ton on it, so hope you all enjoy reading it! It's very interesting system to play, with a distribution system that might turn a few people off it's bundles.

Don't forget to also listen to audio podcast the Table's Edge guys just put up that I linked at the bottom of my post, if you want some extra insight.

Just read your review. Thank you very much for the enthusiastic yet objective work. However, I play 15mm and only want/need the rulebook and I guess some suitably sized tokens. I do not see any option on their site for a rulebook only. Seems the least you can get away with is rules plus figures. You mention joining as a patreon but that is unclear on their site. What level are you at and can that be for only 1 month in order to get the rules only? Thank you.

Book only is available via Print on Demand from Amazon

As Cypher says, rulebook by itself is on Amazon and contains pages with the cards on that you can photocopy.

If you prefer the PDF, then you can join at the Containment level on the Patreon and get access to the digital files, which can only be for one month

I've done more vehicle printing on my new 3D printer, this time looking at the giant Kamaz Typhoon. I've done a little post on it at https://www.hntdaab.co.uk/blog/2022/01/11/sitrep-big-printing-pt-3-typhoon/ with more details coming once it's painted up.

Also sorry for being away for a while, been focusing on other things. But for this year, I'm going to be tryting to do a lot of Ultramodern wargaming, pushing the ChargeReal forward, painting up my Ultramodern forces and then getting them into action. In fact, I'm going to be working on my own conversion to bring Chain of Command to the Ultramodern setting, inspired by some of the other conversions (which has required some detective work to find out more info on)

That thing is massive! other than a few hanging supports to clean up it's gonna do wonders once painted!

Just posting as a podcast I guested on just released that episode. The Table's Edge, a podcast focusing on Spectre Operations and other Ultramodern Wargames, invited me to come on and talk about all things wargaming with them. I had great time and hopefully you enjoy listening to it!

Thanks! I had a really good time

Today's SITREP is talking some more about the upcoming Ultramodern Chain of Command stuff I've been working on. I've got a first draft of the basic tweaks and will be trying them out this weekend in some games.

More details are on the blog at  https://www.hntdaab.co.uk/blog/2022/01/20/sitrep-rules-and-platoons/ (https://www.hntdaab.co.uk/blog/2022/01/20/sitrep-rules-and-platoons/)

Very interested in what you're cooking up for CoC, and I'd be interested in stripping the most wizzy toys from your mods to a marginally less advanced version for Cold War Gone Hot as well.

From how it's going, you might not need to strip too much away - with it being set in my alternative universe there are some forces that are very Cold War-esque

I know we all love them, it's time for a Battle Report. And this time with extra rules information.

Managed to do the first full playtest of the Ultramodern tweaks for Chain of Command. Worked out really well, players had a great time - hit the players with the right collection of concerns and responsibilities an ultramodern game of this scale should while also still playing like Chain of Command.

It's on the blog at https://www.hntdaab.co.uk/blog/2022/01/23/battle-report-operation-rubicon-ultramodern-chain-of-command/ (https://www.hntdaab.co.uk/blog/2022/01/23/battle-report-operation-rubicon-ultramodern-chain-of-command/)

Thanks guys, glad you enjoyed it!

I am very interested in Ultramodern CoC, where do I find it......

it will be on the blog once I'm done with it. Core rules are mostly there but still needs testing (to make sure I'm not releasing crap) and platoons/support lists. I also want to add in details for forces like Insurgents and SOF which will need more time.

Interesting read. COC is not a ruleset I have looked at, it certainly is different from the turn up and fight rules I have seen previously.
