Title: Dust and Shadows Gladiator Project Update 29/07/23
Post by: bluewillow on November 09, 2021, 10:15:26 PM
While I was suffering painters block a few weeks back I turned to movies, books and local adventures to put me back on course. All of the options however added some more kit to my painting and construction tables, and some ideas were moved to the front rather than at the back, mojo is back happy to say and going through a purple patch now!

On one of the tours we visited our local Amphitheatre at Jublains, the former Roman capital of the Diablintes tribe about 10 klms away from the Maison. This gave me inspiration for two things. One was the Gallic farm buildings (see previous post) and the other was gladiators.

I am yet to build the amphitheatre, however I want it to be around two x two foot tile, oval which will look a little different, with a removable rear wall so I can remove it then also add a straight section and second corner for chariot racing on the big table.

The arena tile will then also fit on my chess table for extra transportable use around the house.
I have six gladiators already completed for around 10 years or so, but also had a lot unpainted gladiators, animals and chariots, so this week I added another 20 odd to the table front and centre, and most will be off the table this week over the coming days while the blood is up!

I am yet to find a suitable set of rules which would be good for French Wargame Holiday evening games, looking at Steve Barbers gladiators set and possibly the old board game set, any other suggestions ?

A few years back a lot of folks were raving about Jugula here on the forum. I played once it was great fun.

Not sure where you can find it now but a trawl of Jugula through the search engine on this site might throw up something.

Yes, I have thought about those, from reading it is all about managing a team. I just want a pick up game that is simple for kids or adults who have never played a gladiator game.

First three gladiators completed. All black tree design range, I think they are still available. Changed a lot of the shields though.

Well done, Lanista Matteus Bluewillus! Keep on painting and you will live through bloody adventures and after many bloody deeds have been done and enough men will have died, you will finally face the emperor himself who will probably grant you freedom…

‘Willow, you’ll have to read the novels by Robert Low about the ex-gladiators ,very good they are; and they mention a fair bit about gladiatorial combat. Have you a Kindle?

Girls you want, huh? The tribune who became a slave, the slave who became a gladiator - striking story. The people now wants to know how the story continues. Smile for me...

...and face the girls! Or should you better beware?

Commenced the Gladiator Arena, built on a 600x600 board so it will fit onto my small table and by adding two other sections will become a chariot racing arena also.

(https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pxarMdeICtw/YZQZqgH3gQI/AAAAAAAAcl0/upP2JnpBOWA_RUVBhu6If50uDfkwzE2WACLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h580/7FF3DFCD-D988-41E5-A4F9-75052B4F4AB6.jpeg)
600 x 600 plywood board, with 20x20 cut to length.

I used a ruler as a compass and drilled my steps into it for marking out the pieces

(https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-y7BGwtA2o7s/YZQZ5OFNPII/AAAAAAAAcmI/o7eTGuCJZEUtEXUQilKJdGeLeGtg7zB0ACLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h474/D8E7D87F-C092-4348-9AD1-3AAD1DCEDF90.jpeg)
the base will be covered in sand

(https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-8ZAiOi3dQTw/YZQZ4FZTfZI/AAAAAAAAcmA/lMOkXBXIajAVJFjZ26gJQLevS1RvyVCYwCLcBGAsYHQ/w500-h640/F9FA7079-A4D6-44D3-8CEA-DC55FAB97BE5.jpeg)
upper section cut, this will form the main base and height for the arena.

(https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DOevcFL7GIo/YZQZmyVCOpI/AAAAAAAAcls/IrmekCBUNH8n-RqVoQZ3fjJGjvrk7o5yACLcBGAsYHQ/w480-h640/385AC451-ECBE-4202-8584-B02CF8E01E86.jpeg)
On the outer edge I will add shops and painted walls and possibly some graffiti

(https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-7iVnY1mDVYo/YZQZpEhoXdI/AAAAAAAAclw/7Va3Ej423MQ3BnY6opkRS6_V3wGVh4xuACLcBGAsYHQ/w480-h640/5A335AF8-B3EE-4AE0-8AFB-5B3F080BEBB6.jpeg)
adding steps and seats

Glue drying tonight on the first stage. Next week some more progress on the Dust and Shadows Gladiator project

cheers
Matt

Nice project. I'm launching into Gladiators in MMXXII, got an arena in the works and a ludus full of Gladiators (mainly Crusader minis).

For rules I will be using "Blood, Sweat and Cheers" from Ganesha Games.  They are quick playing to resolve a 1v1 combat, reflecting a number of the different fighting styles. Hoping to get a one night tournament at the club, see who can win the rudis and a glorious retirement.

Will be watching your project with interest.
