I'm working on a large Rennaissance project at the moment. I'm assembling six different armies to use with Neil Thomas' One Hour Wargames rules.
I'm planning to end up with Landsknechts, Conquistadores Aztecs, Elizabethan sea dogs, Border Reivers and Ottoman Turks.
I've started with the Landsknechts. Here are the first miniatures, four infantry units, the maximum I'll need. Miniatures are all Artizan.
Each army has ten units, from which six are randomly drawn to form armies for the scenario being played. So, not a massive undertaking but still substantial.
More about my plans, and lots of photos on the project page here:

Looking good. A nice manageable scale of a project.
-
They look splendid! I like what you are doing basing wise.
Irregular Wars is a good set of rules, and should cross over nicely force size wise. You will need 1 more figure to make an Irregular Wars army from the OHW ones - and that is a leader. He attaches to a single unit in IW, but it is important to know where he is.
-
Nice, as are all your projects.
I do admire your ability to plan AND finish things.
-
Echo all of the last sentiments. Great job but it’s the planning and ability to finish what you start that is equally impressive

I'll almost certainly paint some leaders, I like to have them on the table even if they don't do anything.

Cool. Did wonder if I was just throwing an idea in the pot after you had finished lol

Two units of swordsmen complete the Landsknecht foot. Now on to the cavalry.

Fabulous looking force 👍. Love the colours and flags.
-
those artizans have come out a treat, particularly the doppelsoldner
cavalry looking fab already just in sepia! Not Artizan I guess.
-
Looks great Paul. I am not a huge fan of multibases, but still a huge fan of your project. Which rules do you use? Own creation???
-

No, they're from Casting Room miniatures (Foundry).

I'm using One Hour Wargames by Neil Thomas, Dirk.

Here's my latest painting update video that features the Landsknechts.

I prime in sand with a flesh wash.

Mounted crossbowmen are done
(https://www.matakishi.net/uploads/4/0/8/7/40876893/rennaissance-troops-landsknechts-058_orig.jpg)
and the gendarmes are underway.

-
I want some Gendarmes now ;D
-
The completed Gendarmes are the two last units in my Landsknecht army. However, I'm going to add in a pair of guns as an option to replace the mounted crossbowmen if desired and some commanders in case I want to play the Irregular Wars rules.

A beautiful looking army Paul 8)
-
Excellent additions - and well done on getting the first force completed (well except the extras, but there are always extras!)
A very colourful looking force. Yet coherent too
-
Lovely work, rapidly executed! Thanks for clarifying your priming too.
Best Iain
-
"I am planning to produce about four (maybe more) armies to play Neil Thomas' One Hour Wargames. These armies consist of six elements drawn from a pool of ten so I shall be assembling and painting all ten options (and some extras, more on those later)."
Really love this overall idea for the project, matakishi, as well as how nicely the army came together.
Looking forward to how it all develops!
-
What a terrific looking army!
-
So, with the addition of the optional artillery and commanders, the Landsknechts are done.

Top job Paul.

Lovely little collection. :-* :-*

Right, with the Landsknechts complete, it's on to the Aztecs!
To begin, some warbands of novice warriors

indeed.
splendid collection Matakishi.
Aztec figs and scenery excellent.

There are a lot of us here that remember those old photos of Landsknechts it seems. They were a big influence on me at the time too.
Here are some more Aztecs. Veteran warriors this time, 10 to a base.
I'm currently working on my Knights which will complete the army except for the commanders. Here are the Eagle Knights waiting for me to paint the Jaguar Knights so they can be based together.

Lovely work Paul, as usual! :-*
All my Aztecs are from Foundry.
I love the Foundry Aztecs. I use them as headhunter proxies myself. You've certainly done them justice. And the Scotia Grendel scenics turned out fantastic as well.
-
I added some ruined Aztec statues to the mix. I realise they shouldn't really be ruined when the Spanish arrived, but...

-
I've started my Conquistadores.
Gosh, I'll have to look at my use of the word 'started'
I normally mean:-
Thinking about...
Sent off for some figures...
Filing some cast lines off... etc etc
Love what you have done.
-
Good start on those Spanish. Lovely castings from Foundry. Your (small) project is starting to look a lot bigger. :D
-
Really looking forward to seeing some games with these
-
Cool project. The collection looks amazing, love 'em. Looking forward to what you do next.
-
The project is still small in comparison to some. I've planned six armies but may have to stop at four because of financial restraints. Time will tell.
Once the Conquistadores are finished I'll have some games with what I've got and see how it goes.
Here are the current Conquistadores based. These are mainly the centre stands for the four infantry units, I'll be painting the arquebus and crossbow armed 'wings' next.

You have almost as many conquistadors as did Cortez !

Cracking stuff Paul 👍

Fantastic project all round

Thanks for the kind words and encouragement. I'm off to get some paint today so I can prepare the 3x3 board and start playing some games.
In the meantime, I've started my Elizabethans.

A fine start👍

It's funny, these Elizabethans are not dressed very differently from the Spanish in the previous army and yet they seem to have a definite English look to them....

Yes, Brother Enoch, enriching his fortune in the New World.

Were there still monks in 16th century England?
-
Were there still monks in 16th century England?
Yes! Is the short answer.
It depends WHEN in the 16th Century.
Henry VIII was a good Catholic Prince till he went 'bad' :D
In fact the British Monarchy still use the title, 'Defender of
the Faith', a title given to Henry by the Pope no less. A title
they surely should have given back. lol lol lol

By the way, if you ever need more Elizabethan musketeers, take a look at Casting Room Miniatures' Elizabethans/Tudors. I don't really like most of the figures in the range, to be honest, but there are a couple of packs of musketeers which look like they're by a different sculptor and which look pretty similar to the Foundry Swashbucklers and Seadogs. SB041 and SB042 are the codes.

You're correct, those are variations of figures from the Sea Dogs range. I don't need any more muskets but I'll bear them in mind just in case.

She's a 3D printed resin miniature. Unfortunately, the listing has ended and been replaced with a Victorian version. Worth contacting the seller though, I've found online printers are very accommodating.

Some photos from the first two games I played with my long-term opponent Mark. We played the first two scenarios from the rules. Each was completed in under an hour with the Landsknechts winning the first and the Elizabethans winning the second.
The rules are simple to learn and give a satisfying game. Success!

That's the fifth army, moving on to the sixth now, religious peasants.
Geez, no need to be so rude!
;) :D lol

Finally, after a four-week delay due to a virus, the infantry units for my Religious fanatics renaissance army are done.
Each one consists of a centre horde of raging flagellants flanked by crossbow-armed clergy.

Hope you are OK now.
Liking the latest units (and the several forces I’ve managed to miss the updates for) you’ve get a really good range of good looking forces now.
-
All your armies are wonderful, but the Religious Fanatics are particularly wonderful. I envy you how quickly you can put together such fine looking forces. Bravo.

that last bunch are brilliantly done, in particular.

Thank you, pretty much back to normal now.

I feel these took much longer than they should have, I'm glad they're finally done. Glad you like them.

Sheer brilliance!! :-* :-*

Indeed! Those powderpigs are a work of genius! :-*
-
I feel that pigs would be too smart to cooperate with this scheme! 😉 (Certainly smarter than the geniuses with the toasting forks....)

Fanatic in a catapult ....on fire....that's what's needed. I mean 's obviously missing.
Wheeeeeeee!

Excellent and bonkers - in fairly equal measures!
Really like the idea of this force, and your execution of the painting and modelling.

Here's my next addition, more Scottish cavalry so I can have a fully mounted army if I want one.

Many thanks to everyone who followed along with this project and added encouragement. I may revisit this thread when I make some buildings or if I film any games but otherwise, that's it, the show's over.
-
It's been great watching your project grow. It's very inspirational.
-
Wonderful carts and useful for diverse periods.
-
This has been a great project to watch grow over the last year (had to go back to the first post to check that!)
The wagons are cool, and are always handy for scenarios, or just table dressing.
Good commitment to have a target and meet it with such splendid looking figures!

Right, with my ACW project completed I'm returning to this one to increase the size of the armies a little.
To update you on progress, I've sold the Aztecs and Religious Peasants and decided to add units to each of the four remaining armies to bring them up to eighteen. This total was set by my already enlarged Scottish (see above).
Here's a video explaining everything:
https://youtu.be/lbIFc1kY_Ws?si=htcFod-kWlvVE9i4
With the Scottish done I've started with the Spanish as they'll take the least amount of work.
I've changed the swordsmen bases in the infantry units to pike to make them European army rather than Conquistadores.

The new infantry:

The old centre bases become swordsman units.

And, finally some Reiters.

I like your use of colour to reinforce the army's nationality.
As an aside from the figures, how do you add artillery to NT's rules?

I use the artillery rules from another section.

That is a great spread Paul! :-*

They look good, Paul. A nice collection, hope you will do more

Just "binge-read" the entire thread - what a wonderful project, well done, sir!

I think this may be my favourite project.
Anyway, here are the additions to my Elizabethan English army.

Nice work!

I like what you have done.
To paraphrase Hannibal, 'It will be enough for the IRISH, no matter how greedy they are' lol

Lovely collection 👍

Splendid. The red, white and blue colour scheme is very effective 8)

This is a great project Paul.
I see that it’s your favourite, which is also great.

Great looking army! 8)

First "full English" I've had in a long while that hasn't left my arteries creaking!!!
Lovely work. I have the raw material for an Elizabethan English army in 15mm for FoG:R; sadly, the rule/army list writers fell for the propaganda and made it a really crap army, which I suspect it actually probably wasn't - certainly not when fighting on its own soil against a landing from the Armada (see the Roger C. thread for a brief discussion on how things would probably have gone).
