After finishing up my 2nd Ed miniatures I've moved on to the modern ones but to give myself a bit of a change I'm painting them on an alternate Black Legion Scheme, a touch more "Grimdark" than what I have been painting.

Assault Squads

Nice paintwork, black's not an easy colour to do but you've made a good job of it.
-
I think they look great. I was never a fan of all the gold trim and red accessories. These look much darker and grimmer which is exactly what chaos marines should be imo
-
Looking good, not too shiny and new.
I, too, prefer space marines to look like they've actually been out fighting rather than in the barracks polishing their armour.
-
Nice, subdued colour scheme, I agree it's better than all the gold. 8)
-
Thanks guys, much appreciated.
-
Looking great, although I wouldn't have minded if you had used that dull brass/gold effect seen on the icon bearer, either. That one's quite effective, too.

These are really nice I like the dark evil looking color scheme

I'm actually going to use that colour on the characters' shoulder pad trims to denote them as someone special and then Abaddon will receive a full gold trim as he's the boss.

Good call, looking forward to that!

More units for my "Grimdark" Black Legion, the Havocs:

Sinister looking fellows- I like that colour palette a lot.

Thanks, after a bit of a break over the festive period I finally cracked on and finished two squads of Terminators.
Lots more images over on my blog as usual:

I've been back working on the Black Legion after a break and it was time to get some paint on my Hounds of Abaddon conversions.

Very cool; the subdued scheme works really well, although I find the pictures a bit dark; while atmospheric, we're probably missing some of the more subtle painting work right now...

Cheers, I did actually play with the lighting but if they go any brighter they look really blown out. This whole army is as dark as shadow to the eye (the opposite of my 2nd Ed Black Legion) so the pictures do a reasonable job of getting this across - albeit with my limited photography skills.
-
I like them a lot Giger, nice work.
I've never really been into chaos in 40K, I always saw it as a late edition, an unnecessary after thought on the part of GW, but the latest chaos marine plastics are pretty tastey.
Are they stupidly oversized like the Primaris stuff?

Ta, they are beefy lads but not quite as big as the Primaris.

In actuality though, Chaos has been a staple of 40K since Rogue Trader. In fact; it's been a major part of the narrative of the Imperium since its inception, and the oldest Chaos marine miniatures were cast as far back as 1988 (even though they were still known as Chaos Renegades back then)...
-
really effective 'look'. Great painting and photography.
-
Cheers
Next up are a pair of Obliterators. It was nice to get something completed in a short space of time and I like the fleshy bio-mech look to them.

Yeah, I'm aware of this. I can remember when that first renegade appeared on the cover of White Dwarf 99, followed by the initial release of that mini, but it was an after thought. There was no chaos faction as such in rogue trader. There were the dangers of the immaterium, enslavers and warp entities, but even in Chater Approved there's still no Chaos renegade faction.
I liked it better that way, though it could just be nostalgia.
Still, as said, seeing Giger's pj's on these newer plastics is making me reconsider. I definately find them more appealing than the Primarus range.
The Obliteraters look real good, looking forward to whatever's next.
-
Cheers hubbabubba and talking of whats next...
The Greater Possessed, a lot of techniques used on the Obliterators were used again but refined somewhat. I really enjoyed painting these and I think they're the stand out unit of the army so far.

After a small break from painting I jumped back in at the deep end and decided to paint up the three remaining non-named characters miniatures (plus the two underlings), more words and images over on my blog:

Time for some heavy support in the way of a Contemptor and Leviathan Dreadnought. I really enjoyed painting these as it was a nice change from infantry miniatures.

Looking good. I really like the dark apostle

Thanks :)

Well it's been a while but I've jumped back on the Black Legion train in an effort to get another chuck of the backlog finish, so of course I start with buying a new unit!

Nice and dark and menacing, just as they should be. Well played.
-
Great stuff 8)

Lovely work on these. This is what Chaos marines should look like. Your black paint jobs are just so much more grimdark than the usual fare we see with the 'standard' GW paint themes

They're very loosely based on the Black Legion scheme on the painted minis in the 2nd Ed Codex.

Just added the latest addition to the army, a Maulerfiend. As usual more images and words over on my blog:

That IS nicely done - the armour is splendid 8) 8) 8)

For a model (I won't say mini as it's enormous) which I've never really liked, you've made it look pretty good. I may even rethink my idea of flogging the one that came in the Eldritch Omens box that I bought in a moment of weakness. ::) (one of many of late, I do like a lot of the latest GW offerings, an two kidneys always seemed excessive.)
Still loving your blacks.

A real beast

The big beastie has a new little sibling added to the army!
