Title: Need help painting 15mm and 28mm fur
Post by: CPBelt on December 05, 2021, 04:47:21 PM
I just want to preface this that I've been out of the miniature painting loop for several years.

I have a huge pile of 15mm and 28mm figures that are furry. I had used drybrushing, but I cannot do that anymore. I have bilateral carpal tunnel and would like to paint "pain-free."  ;)  Any suggestions?

Link to my Splintered Light Hares I painted in 2013 using drybrushing: https://ordinarygaming.blogspot.com/2013/09/splintered-light-spear-sword-hares.html (https://ordinarygaming.blogspot.com/2013/09/splintered-light-spear-sword-hares.html)

Thanks

Have a look at Games Workshop’s Contrast Paints. While they are a little pricy they are great for doing fur and other textured surfaces with one coat, over a white (or pale) undercoat.

There are a number of browns in the range (all with rather silly names!)

If you go with contrast paints for painting fur, it is probably worth getting the contrast medium as well, so you can thin the pigment a bit while keeping the flow characteristics. That way the white/pale primer on the high points in the fur texture will show through a bit more and the end result will be closer to what a dry brush technique produces. Some of the contrast paint browns are very dark.

For realistic fur, I’d suggest two or more contrast paints blended wet on the model. I usually use washes and dry brushing for fur, and I find that it doesn’t look like fur until you get up to 3 or 4 mixed colours

Looks like I'll have to watch some videos on contrast paints.

There are plenty of tutorials available on painting fur
