Title: New paint set 🤔
Post by: Chimpfoot on December 05, 2021, 07:01:32 PM
Having had a bit of a lay off and coming back to find that a few of my paints had dried up/gone bad….I had toyed with the idea of buying a whole new set
Was wondering….what do the heads here think are the best/value for money range?
Been looking at sets of 20-50 eye dropper jars …..
Any recommendations?

Good question,and a difficult one.
I have paints from all sorts of companies,In Australia we seem to be able to get pretty much everything, however depending on where you live that might make a difference.
At the moment I’m enjoying using Scale 75,Abt 503,and of course everyone’s standby Vallejo, though AK Interactive are pretty good too. Games Workshop is pretty much the only paint I don’t use purely because I can get all the others.
So if I was going to get new paints,I would probably go for Vallejo, easy to get, vast range, and reasonably consistent.

The Vallejo mega paint sets are a decent option especially if purchased from a discounter. Previously, I pretty much exclusively used GW paints, but I made the switch to Vallejo Game Colour a few years back. I still supplement them with the odd paint and wash from other manufacturers though.

I also quite like their washes and in general they seem decent enough paints for the price- I haven't had any issues with them and have used them quite extensively.

There are better paints out there but as you can usually find their sets with decent discounts it makes them pretty good value.

I agree 100% with Blackwolf's sentiments. I also use many different brands and although I have committed to the ScaleColour range I think the Vallejo sets are probably the best bet. Army painter I find meh... One of the nice things about the GW paints and Vallejo is that they do exactly as it says on the tin: base coats are opaque, layer paints less so, etc. As far as I can tell there isn't that with Army Painter.

If I was starting from scratch and just wanted one range it would be Scalecolor

I started with Vallejo, they are available almost everywhere in central Europe, and are decent paints for a good price, and very wide range. But I would say, that AK and Scale are a bit better paints. The difference isnt huge, but remarkable. And still: You cant go wrong with a Vallejo starter set.
I dont know about GW (except the horrible pots and prices), and Army Painter...

Re Army Painter I have had issues with number of colours not mixing very well and unpigmented liquid coming out. I've gone through mine and added ball bearings (part of the army painter range which maybe says something)

If I was adding bearings to a lot of new paints I think I would be very  >:(

I would be tempted to suggest Vallejo Model Colour or Andrea Scale 75 just for reasons of colour range and quality alone.

However, I am also rather partial to P3 paints (I put all mine in droppers), as they remind me a lot of the old "Red Period" GW paints.

It might be illuminating to know what the OP will mainly be painting and what range he’s used to.

The main reason I opted for the Vallejo Game Colour set was because it mirrored the old GW range that I was familiar with. Like most of us, I imagine, I had developed some favourite recipes that I wanted to continue to use.

...Going by his recent topics, it looks like fantasy, sci-fi, and post-apoc. ;)

I really like all the Instar paints I have. Those and the few Gamescraft MP paints are my favorites. Sadly, both are UK sellers and that makes it hard for me to buy them, and so I usually settle for Vallejo or Army Painter because that is what I can get at the FLGS. I've no interest in buying GW products, though I could get those too.

Foundry paints are pretty good, as are Coat d’armes, but I use a lot of the Liquitex artist acrylics. Cheaper and last longer than the hobby paints
