Title: Eagles of Empire FPW, any views?
Post by: Redshank on December 10, 2021, 10:43:53 AM
Hi all, my eye has been drawn to the Eagles of Empire FPW skirmish rules and accompanying figures.

The 28mm figs from EoE (and from Perry) look great, and a skirmish game would be easier to get into as I am starting from scratch.

Any views on the rules? The books look nicely done, but they are not cheap, and the producer is also selling unit cards and "doctrine cards". Could anyone with experience of the rules say if these cards are required? Looks like costs could mount rapidly if so, and it would be frustrating not to be able to implement a tactic in game because you don't have the right one.

Grateful for any thoughts and impressions.

I have Bavarian infantry and Prussian Cuirassiers, which I very much like, though none have yet to complete their journey along the paint queue. The line does have high production values.

I’m actually going to be using Rebels and Patriots, so I’m not familiar with the E0E rules. A ‘rules card’ does come with each box of miniatures, though these cards are now also available separately (I imagine for those who are wanting to play the rules with a different range of minis).

The guy that runs the venture is very approachable/helpful.

One thing to be mindful of is shipping costs from Denmark to the UK, which are high (it’s not EOE gouging, they really are high!). Obvs it’s best to maximise any orders to get the most out of the shipping expense.

The rules are now printed for 30 pounds.

Thanks folks, had somehow missed that video in my googling.

Still curious about how the "doctrine cards" work. The straight unit abilities for French and Prussian infantry are the same except the French have a longer ranged rifle (appropriately enough), which suggests the French will win on average. I guess the "doctrine cards" redress the balance somehow. Or maybe you are just expected to use artillery (where the Prussians have the edge).
