Title: Simon's eventually gargantuan 1670's thread + Royal Dragoons 25/1/22
Post by: bigredbat on December 10, 2021, 02:06:16 PM
Here the first of (hopefully) very many battalions for the War of the Devolution and the Franco-Dutch War. Ironically it starts with a unit that falls slightly outside the period- the 1st Foot Guards ca. 1683.

Very nicely done.  :-* :-*
You mention one unit a week for the next few months? That's is real dedication and hard work.  :o

Thanks chaps.

Only because I have quite a few units that are mostly finished, bar basing. And because various chums are doing the heavy lifting with the painting, and another all the flocking. :-)  The bottleneck will be the time it takes me to finish the painting, add flags, get them on the bases and grout them, so eventually it'll slow down to a unit every couple of weeks.

Thanks- I use a base coat of static grass with a blend of eight or ten different types of tufts, on top, lightly dry-brushed buff and matt-varnished. 25+ tufts a base. It sounds complex but I can finish two units in an evening, and it really sets them off, I think, although my local chum Ian thinks it is over the top. He likes a simpler style, nary a tuft in sight.

Your basing is fab! So many people do them a bit arid for my liking, yours is spot on :)

Love the basing - and the painting, of course.

How did you get the serrated edges to the bases?  Or do they come that way?  The irregularity should look good on the gaming table.

They are from my famous(ish) range of wobbly-edged bases, wot I invented (shades of Slartibartfast) and now sell. They have been compared to

...but don't taste as good.

Here's my second finished unit- the Tangier Regiment, AKA Kirke's Lambs. Another British unit- they are in some ways easier as the flags are easily available. 1670's Dutch flags, in particular, are very hard to source- I'm hoping (probably in vain) that someone will do a range.

Magnificent painting on a very fine regiment.  I have this battalion currently on the painting table with 70% completed but using Front Rank figures.

Fantastic work.

Dutch flags are a problem, the painter Dave Woodward hand painted a number of our ones for 1672, they look right so I don't inquire deeper.

I've attached the flags we used for the Dutch Guard, I think it's accurate for Williams Blue Guard.

Flags of War made me a 1670s Coldstream guard pair of flags, and Charles II's English regiment flags. I'm sure if you drop him a line he'll find them for you.

I've also attached what we think was the Bishop of Munster's regt flag, if that's of interest when you get to the Germans.

Thanks Nick!

The Dutch Guard flag you include is brilliant- iirc that's one of the ones captured at Seneffe in 1674, which are the ones I covet most of all, and I will most certainly do that. I'll mail Iain and ask him about the Charles II flags.

The trouble with the Franco Dutch War is that it's relatively niche. But it might become quite a bit more popular with the arrival of the excellent new Helion books. The Mugnai one on the Dutch includes a selection of flags that no-one does yet (eg Aylva, that's a lovely flag) and some proposed new reconstructions of other flags (eg Kirckpatrick, Vribergen).  Maybe if there is enough interest we could persuade Iain to add a new Franco-Dutch War section to his shop and add a few new flags to work alongside the already useable Dutch ones he already has from the WSS? Judging from the other threads here, there seems to be a renewed interest in the war.

It would be great if Iain did some Dutch flags.

I'll drop him a line- perhaps if I can guarantee enough interest (I can collect some names), then that'll give him the confidence to do the work.
