Title: Super Robot games... mechs as superheros?
Post by: Simlasa on December 17, 2021, 08:50:55 PM
I've been looking around to see if there were any miniature wargames aimed at the Super Robot genre... Robotech is the 'real robot' end, but I'm looking for things like Mazinger and Getter Robo.
So far I haven't found much but I've noticed that Super Robots get compared to superheroes a lot... so I'm wondering if maybe a set of superhero rules would be better suited to this sort of thing (since I cannot find a game specifically aimed at them).
But I'd still want a feeling of the scale.

Has anyone turned an existing set of super rules (Supersystem?) toward this?
Is something like Monster Island or Giant Monster Rampage a better solution?

Thanks for any helpful ideas/suggestions!

Ganesha Games’ Samurai Robot Battle Royale is designed specifically to emulate the Super Robot genre.

I like your idea of using a superhero game though; that could work well.

Thanks for that suggestion - I went ahead and purchased the rule set (it's not that expensive), and was impressed how they captured the spirit of the older 1980s robot anime (right down to Grendizer's saucer and rocket fists, to the Mazinger series' Boss Robot) as well as the more militarist Gundam. Not to mention the addition of rules for more conventional armed forces to be used in the game and the steampunk option.
My one problem is that I will be using 1:144 models, for which I have barely any models, scenery included, apart from the robots themselves - unless I involve my N gauge railway models, with trains scurrying around to get away from the battle...

There is plenty of free papercraft scenery for Battletech floating around the internet... if you print it at double size it should scale close enough to what you are using. Otherwise, 1/72 papercraft printed at half size will be perfect, if a bit fiddly.

Thanks, will take a look.  :)

I also went ahead and purchased the Ganesha games, but I've yet to get a chance to try them out.
The papercraft terrain sounds like a great idea.
