Here are the suggestions, compiled by Hammers, from previous years. I eliminated used topics, and a couple which were period-specific - or made them wider-ranging; grouped or removed a couple which were very similar to used themes; and added some new ones.
Please do post your suggestions and I will update the list. We'll try to get a decision by the first week of January

How about accommodation/resting place (something like that) as a theme?
I only say this as I've an idea for a build that would fit in with it. ;D
-
Some interesting ideas already ....”Defence” Or maybe “war machine” appeals personally, but I also like Voltan’s suggestion of “resting place”.
Another broad category to throw into the mix would be “time” ... not period specific and could be interpreted as showing decaying/ageing effects or measuring time...?
-
I’m keen on engine, speed or war machine :)
-
'nutha voice here for war machines.
-
I like "Using a..." That sets a level playing ground yet stil with a lot of options.
-
I'm listening.
We should do 'resting place for a war machine made out of a CD' :D ;) ;)
That's sounds like I could enter a photo of my failed project storage in the cellar, I am sure I had something like that going on at one point....
-
Lots of good subjects, but I too like
How about accommodation/resting place (something like that) as a theme?
How about including a 'Feed the troops' to that ????
-
I think it is important that the theme is broad enough that it can be applied to several periods, and not contain the construction methods.
I like the idea of e.g. defense as that can be interpreted in many ways.
This could be a building, a fortification, a weapon or even a natural feature.
-
Quite like resting place. And defence.
-
I think ‘Defence’ is quite similar to last years ‘Difficult ground’ so my vote would be ‘Use a’ :)
-

I’d end up doing another bloody pond, with nymphs handing out cupcakes…. lol
-
Keeping tally so far:
Resting place - 4
War machine - 3
Defence - 2 (and one concern it could be similar to last year's difficult terrain)
Use a (whatever) - 2
Speed - 1
Engine - 1
Feeding the troops - 1
Time - 1
Cupcakes and nymphs - 1 ;) :D
As the 'feeding the troops suggestion' was made as something complementary to rest, perhaps this could be considered as rest/recuperation (just as we once had fire/ice). Or plain old rest/food
As for defence: I see the point about potentially replicating difficult terrain; am trying to see if a suitable alternative can be found - perhaps armour/shelter?
Thanks for posting here to all - keep up the discussion :D

Keep in mind, John, that in the end the theme is up to you. You need to "feel it" yourself to be able to run it for oh so many weeks, you know.
-
I like the idea of resting place, it can have so many possibilities
-
I would vote for "Defence" (although a "Defence" is generally considered difficult or rough ground in game terms it is not really the same thing as "Difficult Ground"- kind of like fingers and thumbs) as I have inspiration for that :), though I could also go for "Resting Place".

I think we sorted the definition last year.
Difficult Terrain is in most rulestes an area in which there is a Movement penalty to move through (like a swamp, dense wood, rocky terrain...)
Defense is, in most rulesets, a spot from behind which miniature A has no attack/shooting penalty but recieved a defence bonus from the attacks from miniature B, given that B is out in the open (like a bunker, wall, trench...)

Perfect!

I will add a vote for either defence or war machine

Thanks - I am very much aware of that. I would never be able to run 'boiled eggs and cigarettes' as a theme oh heck why did I have to mention that urrrgh long story...
Having said that: I would enjoy and live with any theme, I think - but I will give my own preferences too:
boom and comic.
War machine would be a challenge, as it's a scratch-build - but not one which should deter anyone of you, I bet :D That said, I'd have to define it carefully, and decide what is implied by the term.
I can see the attraction of defence, in spite of its potential similarity - the definition helped!
Strange thing is that I have no single idea for a build this year, for ANY of the themes mentioned, even the ones I prefer. Probably because I haven't stopped for a good think.
-
I was the same, then I had a ‘big think’,and surprised myself with different builds :)
-
My vote for resting place. If I had another choice it would be building an objective.
-
I was the same, then I had a ‘big think’, and surprised myself with different builds :)
I had a small think, but all that came out was a sudden urge to build one of my pair of 40K knights... definitely not helpful to my BSC plans!
So it seems that in the lead are resting place (would just 'rest' work better?); war machine; and defence; with use a (something) trailing. Any additional comments to close the year?
-
(would just 'rest' work better?);
How about, 'Repair & Rest' ???
-
I could add a "resting place" to my alien swamp :D
Though I'm fine with anything that come up so far. :)
-
Really any theme would be alright with me as long as it's broad enough to be interpreted in a variety of ways. I also agree with the sentiment that it should be sufficiently different from the recent years.
-
Perhapps rename Defence as Strongpoint, to make it clear that it is different to Difficult Ground.
-

That’s a good idea - on top of the definition Hammers mentioned, it makes it a very different proposition from “difficult ground”
:)
-
I like Defence or resting place/recuperation and war machine.
Cheers
Matt
-
Two suggestions are coming to the fore, both evolved:
Resting place, which could become Rest and Recuperation (with either of the two being sufficient)
vs
Defence, which could become Strongpoint.
I might resort to a die roll... :D
-
I might resort to a die roll... :D
lol
-
I already had ideas spawning for rest and repair, but I'm sure the juices will flow for any theme... :D
-
I'm for resting place, as there are a tonne of different ways it could go
-
I have ideas for both Rest/repair and Defense/Strongpoint so i am good either way. 8)
-
Plenty of (crazy) ideas for Defence/Strongpoint but am sure can come up with something for Rest as well :D
-
My idea, that I'll be building anyway, kinda fits in both categories, but I'm up for cupcakes if muffins are close enough.
-
I am thinking about starting warhammer siege I already have a castle but was thinking of adding to it, would that fit the theme?
-
Resting place sounds good. Broad enough to allow for some interpretation yet keep things within the umbrella of the theme.
-
Going down the route of Devils Advocate.
To a man There's not one of you who couldn't conceive a cunning plan with in five minutes for any of the topics in the list. Being honest you've more than half a plan already if you're proffering a topic. As it more than likely to fit in with a current project.
So why not take this into account.
Simply when you enter state a period/genre you intend the finished build to be use in. Once the competition is over.
It'll give you motivation and diversity to the competition.
More over if you can't finish In time or have to pull out of the competition. Then your not left with a dead build with no relevance to your projects. Rather something that remains relevant and can be picked up again when your able or just at a slower pace than competition speed.
That way you've no dead or lost hobby time, and your not sat hoping the build choice will have relevance to your hobby space.
How to add the challenge?
Ignore all the usual choices and list's and use something more abstract such as one of the following. A line of poetry, a song lyric, a paraphrased quote from a movie ,or even a phrase.
It does force you to use 'the little grey cells' more than relying up on your crafting abilities.
How to choose the theme?
(With the exception of those wish to enter) why not have the modes privately proffer their choice for a lyric etc. To the competition organiser. Who then choose from the compiled list.Randomly if need be.
Of course as always having the theme remain hidden until after the closing date for entering. Is much more of a level playing field.
Just a musing
-
Arnold Lane anyone?
-
Rest seems like a decent one with lots of possibilities.
I'd be latched onto the Ink Spots if we were trying to use lyrics for inspiration...
-
That's a very interesting suggestion TSG; I quite like it.
-
Ooh,I’ve been looking at a lot of Rodney Matthew’s paintings :)

I got his new calendar but I’m resisting the temptation to go through every month lol

Probably 'Rodney Matthews' could be a good theme...
Oh wait, I'm supposed to be deciding, not contributing more ideas... :D ;)

Who is Rodney Matthews?

Who is Rodney Matthews?
I had to look up his work myself, but that's a bit far out for my taste! lol
But he did so some LotR work too I saw...

One of my favourite artists :)

Gosh, he’s talented.
-
I am not playing if Rodney Mathews is the theme :'(
There is not a straight line in any of his pictures too organic shapes for scratch building

My thoughts exactly lol

I would like to add an addendum:
I'm not a prog-rock fan lol

Too late to deny I think ;)

Matthews is a good artist. Excellent stuff - but if we are using artists can I suggest Chris Foss? Absolutely love his work.
Wait, are we still on topic here?

Nope, and it's all my fault :D
And don't worry gamer Mac, I was only kidding. Although it would be a nice idea for a challenge.
-
Sorry, my fault as well.
I would prefer ‘Strongpoint’ but ‘Rest’ is doable also :)
Too late to deny I think ;)
lol
-
Rest would be nice
-
Let's put this matter to rest. As the Romans say, alea iacta est (thank you Goscinny for teaching me the about the classic world).
Literally - rest assured that I actually rolled a die, one of those Warlord Miniatures Test of Honour ones, and it came up two knives, which was one of the 50% of the sides representing the winning choice.
To put your minds at rest, I will give the theme here as I probably won't have time to set up the competition rules tonight - I still have work to clear this evening before I get some rest.
The theme of the Build Something Competition 2022 is 'Rest'.
As in resting place, or resting.
And to give this competition a slogan: The rest is up to you. :D
-
Hmmm,I was hoping for defence; I had the idea for a sci-fi castle. However methinks a wizards sci-fi retreat/hermitage should do the trick (I bought three tubes of Pringles yesterday) :)
So expect Rodney Matthews crossed with Sidney Sime with a dollop of Ian Mcque ;)
-
And to give this competition a slogan: The rest is up to you. :D
Aw! Give it a rest will you. :D
Now to start thinking.
-
I guess now that is settled we need a start date and a finish line.
-

I do like the sound of that 8)

:D
In other non-news, I have to admit this is the theme which has had me most badly stumped so far, in all the BSCs I took part in.
I do have a couple ideas, but none which really took my fancy, other than the idea of building a games table on a real four poster bed. You could even have a mattress level surface and a ceiling level one. Space and funding constraints mean that this one is likely to never see light.
