Title: Raedwald’s Sci Fi Thread (p.9 - Pilots)
Post by: Raedwald on December 28, 2021, 11:33:44 AM
Hi All,

After many years of mainly lurking I thought I’d take the leap and share some of my humble efforts here on LAF. Plus, doing so ticks off one of my hobby objectives for 2021 as we reach the end of another year.

I took what was meant to be a short break from Sci Fi platoon painting to paint up some individual figures this year. As it turned out, with the schools being closed due to COVID and then multiple colds, Raedwaldsdottir spent a lot of time at home, and I never did manage to get back to the platoons (jobs for 2022 now! - although 5 Parsecs is really dragging me into more skirmish stuff).

Below are:
- A freebie from one of the early Colony 87 launches, painted up as a Confrontation / Necromunda Caryatid (minor conversion with the basing and gun swap).
- Classic Copplestone News Crew, from EM4 I think.
- Necromunda Escher Heavy.
- Necromunda Orlock Ganger, with a head swap from a Hasslefree dwarf.
- Warzone Cartel Agent.
- Warzone Bodyguard (also from the Cartel Agents set).

Now to see if I can finish off anything else before the New Year. Have a good one everyone.

Fantastic selection! I love Copplestone and Goodwin sculpts, and it's great to see an Escher in a more subdued colour scheme. The caryatid's tattoos are awesome, but that Orlock head swap is inspired!

Wow, thanks all, you're too kind, especially knowing how talented so many of you LAF legends are!

@Lord Faoil & @Axiom - The Caryatid's tattoos are one of those things where I went to town with the planning; gathering images and thinking to line them on with pencil before painting over - then when it came to it I ended up just making it up as I went along! I wasn't overly pleased in the end, but I guess we all feel that way when what we create ends up nothing like what was in our heads  ^_^ .

@Cacique Caribe - He sure is, it's the killer eyes I think.

@Axiom - I'm totally with you on Copplestone and Goodwin, the bulk of my lead pile is Goodwin elves and Eldar, and just this month I added to it with a mass of Copplestone minis from North Star - massive purchase vs. paint deficit this year u_u .

Cheers all!

Many thanks guys!

@War Monkey - I did post a couple of ‘action shots’ featuring some of these minis in the Small Skirmish Games child board, to give myself closure on an excessively long Rogue Stars game write up I did several years ago.

I’ve also finished an industrial unit to round off the year (well sort of - I might still add some odd bits of debris and some posters), so I thought I’d share some the terrain I completed this year, which partly made up for the paltry miniature painting output.

Apologies for the poor quality photos. Items are:
- Scratch built industrial unit, made from food packaging, electronic scrap, novelty straws and Antenocitis control pads.
- Microart Studios food booths (including an homage to my favourite ‘90s animation, Dr Katz).
- Microart Studios fuel drums.
- Puppets War stone walls.

Cheers all, Happy New Year!

Hi all,

I’ve finally finished the To’ok Fencibles from Zombiesmith that I’ve been working on between other bits for an age.

I really like these figures for their original look and the motion in their poses. I bought them long ago when they were sold in squad size packs, not like now when they’re in odd mixed groups. Lovely figures and fun to paint.

I did some minor conversions on the leader waving his troops forward, weapon swaps for the RPGs and machine guns (which replaced limpet mines I wasn’t keen on), and an underslung grenade launcher for each fireteam.

Below are photos of the four fireteams, each with a rifle, specialist, leader and grenadier.

Cheers,
Raedwald

Thanks for the kind words chaps.

You’re absolutely right; even when you know exactly what you’re looking for it’s a challenge to find these guys on the website.

I’d quite like to get hold of the big fella and there was a good ‘hero’ model carrying a casualty that doesn’t seem to be available now… but I’m also apprehensive about ordering from abroad now, due to postage issues and ever-worsening exchange rates.

Below are a some extra photos that I messed up trying to upload last night:
- My attempt at jet thrusts for the figures that are ‘jumping’
- More angles of the machine gunners

Cheers,

Hi all,

I’ve put the finishing touches to the power armoured (Knight) standard bearer, photo below.

He’s accompanied by a spare sentry figure I used as a colour scheme tester for the Fencibles.

A thousand nerd points [non-redeemable, non-exchangable] to anyone who recognises the writing on the banner, can translate it, AND can identify the sci-fi reference.

Thanks for looking,
Raedwald

They really are beautifully painted! I have no idea about the reference on the flag - the face looks like Alf to me, but w can’t translate the banner (unless it says “alf”).

I clearly need to polish up my nerd trivia…

@Blackwolf - Thanks! I really like the character of these miniatures.

@Pattus Magnus - Thank you, yes, you’re right, that’s an unfortunate similarity to Alf. I had a cat when I was young so, perhaps controversially, I never liked Alf  lol
So, it’s not ‘Alf’ I’m afraid. As a clue: the logo is meant to be porcine (although the word is not ‘pig’).

I’ve just finished a To’ok militiaman, so will try to take a piccie to post along with the answer next week, if no one’s got it before then.

@bandit86 - Totally agree. Also… that’s the Hero mini I was on about before, very nice!
Title: Re: Raedwald’s Sci Fi Thread (update p.2: To’ok Militia)
Post by: Raedwald on July 13, 2022, 08:44:35 PM
Hi all,

Some photos of the To’ok militiaman I just finished, dressed in green.

While I was failing to take a decent picture, I thought I should include an equally poor one of the figure a did a couple of years ago, dressed in red, since I’m in To’ok mode currently.

For anyone curious about the previously posted banner, the characters are taken from the Star Wars ‘Aurebesh’ alphabet and spell out “Wub”, in reference to the Philip K. Dick short story “Beyond lies the Wub”, which stars a pig-like alien creature.

Cheers,
Raedwald

Hi all,

A bit more terrain this time: finished off some scratch-built shanties.

Their core is some plastic packaging of the desired size, with some dried baby wipes dipped in diluted PVA for curtain doors, and then various corrugated paper and textured plastic packaging stuck all over them.

I hope to make a load more of these at some point, but that’s some way down the queue at the moment.

Cheers,
Raedwald

I like the shanties.
I would be torn between adding graffiti (with a white gel pen)
& leaving them as is for  more generic usage (modern earth etc.)

Great shanties… and I really love your To‘ok, especially the last couple you did. Lots of character. Great idea to do patterned fabric.

@War Monkey - Thanks!

@has.been - Thanks, yes I did think about graffiti, but ended up sticking with something closer to images of real shanties I looked at, since I might use these pieces in ash waste settings as well as underhive.
It often looks great, but other times I worry that graffiti can dominate a piece of terrain if its not subtle enough. Will try some out on some MDF buildings soon and see how I get on, cheers.

@Grumpy Gnome - Thank you! The patterned fabric looked great on some Perry samurai I saw, so I was keen to try it.
Title: Re: Raedwald’s Sci Fi Thread (p.3 - apprehended Abdul Goldburg)
Post by: Raedwald on August 12, 2022, 05:29:17 AM
Hi all,

The Antediluvian Miniatures ‘Captive fugitive’ was a must-have figure for me from when I first saw it; perfect for so many scenarios. The sculpting, especially of the face, is so fine too - I’ve not really done it justice, but this is a lovely miniature.

I do apologise for the sacrilege of using a non-Oldhammer miniature to represent Goldburg (as per the post title), but I wanted to experiment with a different skin tone and then it seemed too good not to have him as the legendary character from the Rogue Trader scenario generators.

My main learning point with this one was: If a guy’s armour includes shin pads, white is not the best colour choice… it’s not too bad after weathering, but he still looks a bit like he’s had a rough over batting for the first eleven!

Cheers,
Raedwald

Title: Re: Raedwald’s Sci Fi Thread (p.3 - Tycho To’ok)
Post by: Raedwald on November 19, 2022, 08:05:57 PM
Hi all,

While I’ve been painting Zombiesmith To’ok this year, I couldn’t resist doing something special that I’ve had in mind for a while with the captain figure. This miniature stood out from the other ‘Knights’ due to its haughty look and sculpted shoulder pad, so was a clear choice as commanding officer.

Since childhood I was captivated by the original Captain Tycho, sculped by the inimitable Jes Goodwin and painted by a young Tim Prow for one of GW’s earliest studio armies: their Blood Angels. With my To’ok captain I fulfilled an ambition to use the original 1991 painting recipe from Prow, taken from White Dwarf 139, and recreate it using the original paints from that era.

I’ve still got the boxed paint sets GW released 30+ years ago, and with only 2 or 3 exceptions (where I let the seals gum up), none of them have dried up! Anyone young reading this, you read it right, GW paint, 30+ years old, still going strong… unlike the more modern stuff you were often lucky to get 12 months out of it.

I also had my first proper go at a back banner since the hideous paper ones I botched up as a kid. After an abortive trial with PVA soaked rice paper, I turned to some engraving foil I’d bought yonks ago, in order to get some folds and movement into it. I’m not too happy with the painting, but it’ll do. The design is based on an excellent Jes Goodwin Ultramarine banner, that was also taken up by Gerry Grace for the Space Marine (Epic) box art.

Anyway, this was a satisfying long term wish fulfilled. Thanks for looking.

Hi All,

A bit of scatter terrain this time. I’d hoped to finish these last year but didn’t quite manage it.

Below are the ubiquitous Junk Piles by Crooked Dice. These superb pieces are versatile for so many potential set ups and scenarios. It was only after I’d bought them and become familiar with their features that I began to notice them everywhere; on blog posts and in rulebooks etc. spanning many years. A rightly popular choice and highly recommended.

I also got some trash piles from Antenocitis Workshop painted up, as well as a telecomms junction box from Crooked Dice.

Hope to crack on with my Five Parsecs crew next.

Cheers,
Raedwald

They look great! As folk have said, they’re versatile scatter terrain. In game terms, they could be variable cover, depending on what the pile consists of… usually soft cover (household garbage won’t stop bullets), occasionally hard cover (big chunks of metal or concrete in the pile), and once in a while explosive (when folks throw highly combustible material in the trash and a shot passing through sets it off).

Hi all,

Finished a character for my Five Parsecs from Home crew; The Prima Luces (PREE-ma LOO-chays).

I’d rolled up a ‘lower megacity class’ trader, and after mulling over several options, I thought I’d have my first go at grinding away a fair chunk of a miniature in order to remodel it with putty. I therefore went with the excellent Colony 87 Tech Trader. I happened to have two of this mini, so could include a before/after comparison below.

I needed him to be shotgun armed, and after an unsuccessful search for something to scale, I ended up lazily using a slightly oversized genestealer hybrid arm that was to hand. Nevermind.

Apologies for the poor photos.

Cheers,
Raedwald

That turned out very well. I actually didn’t notice the oversized arm when I first looked at the picture (I noticed the enormous gun, but that’s just how they are in the 40k universe…). The smooth conversion work and excellent painting keep attention away from the arm’s proportions.

Perhaps having the arm as cybernetic, with a metal hand, would have given you a story reason for the discrepancy ???

And thanks for the reassurances about the arm. Painting can help hide a multitude of converting sins. The gun masks it from the front, but I confess to angling the back photo favourably to hide the ape-like propotions!  lol

@uti long smile - Pure coincidence, a consecutive one of yours from Crooked Dice. Cheers.

Also just noticed I’ve forgotten to add any static grass - job for tonight.

Also; shoulderpads hide a whole range of sins, and the arm does not look out of place  to me. Things have become better, but older sculpts often had much larger discrepancies. Just sayin' ;)

Post by: Raedwald on February 12, 2023, 10:34:41 AM
@Daeothar, @Metternich - Thanks both.

The next member of my Five Parsecs crew is a ‘Special Agent’ raised in an ‘Alien Culture’. This was a chance to use Hasslefree’s Ekaterina miniature. I had the basic metal figure (not a ‘resin master’), but the detail is still so fine and crisp.

Here I experimented with mixes of old inks, and was fairly pleased, despite ending up with a totally different result to what I’d planned. Then disaster stuck as I brushed on some varnish. My heart sank as I saw my brush turn red, and although the ink had had 2 - 3 days to dry it reactivated.  :'(

Lots of the shading depth vanished and the figure looked badly sunburned  :-I. Fortunately, touching up and repainting the flesh wasn’t too onerous.

Not sure how to prevent this, given that I do want to varnish my minis. Perhaps stick with diluted paints rather than inks… or give them a month to dry or something.  ???

Cheers,
Raedwald

Niced colour scheme.

With regards to varnishing, get a cheap airbrush and compressor. Well worth the investment even if you only ever use it for undercoats and varnishing.

@has.been, @hubbabubba - I’d considered a can spray, but have always shied away from air guns, due to an irrational aversion to such alien contraptions that require lots of cleaning between uses. You’ve really got me thinking twice though.

I’d been put off spraying varnish previously due to all the tales of frosting, if it’s too cold / too humid / too heavily applied… etc. If I can face the effort, expense and find the courage, perhaps that’s the solution.

Cheers

I also dread, but am in awe of, Air-Brushes.
Therefore I use 'Rattle  Cans'  The cheapest possible. Last few came from the erroneously named
'Poundland' at the hefty price of £2.50 a can.
I avoid spraying if it is too cold, wet etc. & go for light spraying. Two light coats are better than
one heavy one. This works fine for me, even over things that brush varnish would remove.
Hope this helps.

Hello all,

@has.been - Thanks for this, I’ve got some figures I want to try Speedpaints on later this year, so will definitely try out the spray (when the weather conditions are also in alignment!), cheers.

Next of the Prima Luce (my 5PfH crew) is a ‘scavenger’, so I picked my favourite Copplestone scavvy.

I’ve deliberately kept this one rough and ready, partly so I can use the same palette on my other Copplestone scavengers to paint them fairly quickly at some future date, and also to match my source of inspiration: a page out of an old William Morris calendar (see below).

Cheers,
Raedwald

One of my favourite Copplestone figures. The muted palette suits him really well, and will hopefully bring the whole batch together. He looks well camo-ed against the inspiration page, which can only be a good thing!

Hi all,

The final member of my 5PfH starting crew (as I’m recycling a couple of older minis too), is a ‘bureaucrat’ and ‘ganger’. I therefore imagined an accountant, or money man (woman) for a criminal gang.

Minor conversion of a 90s Escher ganger combined the gangster vibe with some secretary/office worker elements - glasses, pencils in hair, duffle bag (for loot). Tried to add to the mash up with the colour scheme.

I pondered a few options for the gun housing, then wantonly ripped off MaaX’s scheme from the post he made on Monday  ::) - thanks!

Cheers,
Raedwald

@Scarper & @DivisMal - Thanks for the comments on the previous post too. I’m very tempted to paint a load more Copplestone Scavengers now, it’s such an awesome range - trying to stay disciplined and stick to my 2023 plan though.

Thanks guys! (Not sure who Tandy is, to be honest).

In campaign turn two, I recruited an extra crew member for my 5PfH crew, and although you don’t get the bonuses for new recruits I still rolled on the tables for that extra random inspiration and character. This resulted in a Scientist joining the others.

Rummaging the pile produced a Copplestone Man in Black, who looked suitably smart, so got painted in civilian clothes for an intellectual who’s hit the bottom and had to join a band of rogues.

Beige-ochre trousers, and a corduroy blazer. The 20th Century styles do look a bit odd with the rest of the crew, but it’s all part of the fun.

Cheers,
Raedwald

Oh, and Tandy was the name of a character in a Necromunda scenario in a really old copy of Citadel Journal, where the character was represented by this very mini. Talk about obscure reference...   :D

@DivisMal - Thanks, this is what I love about Five Parsecs; if it weren’t for the randomisation tables getting the brain-juices flowing, I doubt I’d ever have considered a non-black suit.

@Daeothar - Thank you. I had a load of those old Journals (possibly still do somewhere)… got them for the Necromunda content too! Still, if I had the Tandy issue it certainly escaped my memory long ago  :(. Thanks for explaining, Google was absolutely no help on that one!  lol

@LouieN, @Scarper, @Grumpy Gnome - Many thanks!

A bit more terrain today, Concrete Barricades from Puppets War. I like the look of these castings, which are modular, so can be set up in a number of ways.

I was a bit disappointed when these arrived, as someone had been overzealous in grinding the undersides, such that several pieces were slanted and different heights, so they didn’t line up at all. Had to repair by building back up with Milliput.

Just a quick drybrush on these, with a wash for the dirty streaks.

Cheers,
Raedwald

Hi all,

After a pleasant summer interlude of Frostgrave, I returned to the sci fi projects, and Five Parsecs has worked its magic; providing the rationale and the motivation to paint up some minis that have languished far too long on the pile.

I prep’d some Pig Iron Production System Troopers, with the wonderful Inner Guard heads, several years ago, to act as a special forces squad for my Kolony Militia platoon.

I’m delighted to have finally got paint on some of them, and have fallen back in love with these awesome, characterful sculpts. Below are the first five. I’ve got another four to go to complete the squad (2 x 4-man Fireteams + 1 Squad Leader).

Cheers,
Raedwald

Thanks for the kind words all, it really is a great motivation.

@Ragsta - I know what you mean about the Pig Iron website. Still, really grateful that the range has been continued after Simon and Lisa Jackson moved on from it.  :)

The rest of the System Troopers are on their way, but in the meantime I finished some scratch built fences.

These started life when I spotted an odd metal rack thing in the scrap bin at work (still no idea what it was), but cut in half it looked just like security fence posts to my eye. The boys in the toolroom kindly chopped it up for a reward of biscuits, and I added some scrap mesh and bases, all scavenged from the same treasure trove scrap bins.  :D

Raedwaldsdottir helped me with the basic painting and weathering, and they were topped off with curled strips of car body mesh, à la White Dwarf 144.

Cheers,
Raedwald

@OSHIROmodels - Yep, biscuits, that excellent workplace currency. See what you mean about the mesh  lol, in this case it’s used on the casing for a custom electronic product.

@AKULA - The little details, like the signage and static grass go a long way towards that suspension of disbelief.

Unfortunately I balanced it out by getting my measurements slightly wrong on the bases, leaving a little gap between each  :-[. Still I can live with it - advice to anyone else making linear terrain though: have a little overhang at the edges!

Cheers.

 Hi all,

Finally finished the squad, with the energy weapons and last two troopers. These guys were crying out to be drybrushed, with all their angular features, but I foolishly opted for line highlighting on the armour; turning a 6 minute job into a 6 hour slog!  :D

Delighted to have them finished and added to the ranks though.

Hopefully I can get something else finished before year end now.

My first real attempt at graffiti here too, after some past encouragement from @has.been. I quite enjoyed the process once I got stuck in, and I’m fairly pleased with the buildings overall.

Hi all,

A bit of scatter terrain today. Generator and pipe thing from Crooked Dice, and some Terrain Crate benches and crates.

Love the Crooked Dice pieces; easy to paint and full of character. The pipes sit flush against a building or wall and look good (shame I limited my options on those Q-Buildings by covering them in graffiti!  lol).

The Terrain Crate bits do the job, but came in a pack of stuff that unexpectedly exposed me to the dreaded bendy resin I’d heard about. I resentfully did the saucepan of hot water thing to try and straighten it all out, with limited success.  :?

Yes, I wanted to leave some dark rims around the eyes, but hadn’t planned for him to look quite so creepy.  lol

Next up, after many real life delays, are a pair of pilots, also from Crooked Dice Colony 87. I’ve wanted to paint these for some time, even though they’ll only be set dressing in-game.

Had thought to do a Stars Wars orange and white scheme until seeing @Scarper’s version of the female pilot in more authentic jumpsuit colours. After collecting images of khaki and olive green jumpsuits I was won over by a sci fi pilot image in white. So not quite to the plan, but I hope it still works.
